<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Installation for skimming a body of water polluted on the surface by floating objects" The invention relates to an installation for skimming a body of water polluted on the surface by floating objects, comprising floats and at least one cone d skimming connected to a suction line.
Bodies of water, c. at. d. rivers, canals, basins belonging to port facilities are frequently polluted on the surface by oils or hydrocarbons as well as by floating objects or waste. Among these is a generally high number of plastic bottles and trash made of polystyrene or polyurethane etc. If the oil spreads easily in all directions, floating objects or waste generally drift in the same direction under the influence of wind and / or current and accumulate in large numbers in certain places.
When trying to skim the surface of a body of water in order to remove the floating pollutant layer, the proper functioning of the skimming system is disrupted by these numerous floating objects of various dimensions.
The object of the invention is to provide an installation which, on the one hand, eliminates any danger of obstruction of the skimming cone and of the suction pipe located downstream and, on the other hand, allows easy harvesting. floating objects provided that these have dimensions exceeding a value which can be determined beforehand.
To achieve this objective in accordance with the invention, the installation comprises a frame connected to said floats and a frame formed by vertical grids surrounding said skimming cone and intended to oppose the passage of floating objects to the

surface of the water body, at least one of said vertical grids being mounted so as to pivot around a horizontal axis under the influence of means which can be controlled remotely, said pivoting grid having an L-shaped section so as to allow the rejection of floating objects on a horizontal grid arranged inside the assembly formed by the above-mentioned vertical grids.
In an advantageous embodiment, the aforementioned pivoting vertical grid is mounted on a horizontal axis of rotation with which is associated a line of compressed air supplying a ramp of compressed air jets directed so as to oppose the passage, in the direction of the skimming cone, of floating objects, during the time devoted to the pivoting of the vertical grid concerned.
Other details and advantages of the invention will emerge from the description which will be given below of an installation making it possible to skim a body of water, according to the invention. This description is given by way of example only and does not limit the invention. The reference notations refer to the attached figures.
Figures 1 and 2 show schematically and in a side view the skimming installation according to the invention, in which the vertical grids have not been shown.
Figure 3 is a view similar to the preceding in which a horizontal grid has been shown according to the principle of the exploded view.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the installation according to the invention, the horizontal grid not being shown.
The installation represented by these figures is designed to work on the surface of a body of water polluted by oils or hydrocarbons. The pollution caused by these materials is therefore limited to the surface of the body of water on which floating objects of all kinds accumulate as described in the preamble.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The installation designed for skimming the surface of a body of water consists of a chassis 1 of generally rectangular shape, preferably square, which is itself equipped with floats 2 which can have any shape deviating from that which is shown by way of example in the attached figures.
The chassis supports at least one skimming cone 3 extended downstream by a suction line 4 connected to a pump, not shown in the figures. These elements are known per se and will not be described in detail.
The invention is characterized by the incorporation of vertical grids 5 consisting of a lattice whose meshes are opposed to the passage of floating objects whose largest dimension does not exceed a given value, for example 4 cm. The vertical grids can have any profile different from that shown in the figures. At least one, but preferably two vertical grids 5 are each mounted on a horizontal axis 6 which can be made to pivot 180 as shown in Figure 2. The pivoting around the horizontal axis 6 is achieved by a small pneumatic cylinder 7 which can easily be controlled remotely. The pneumatic cylinder 7 is designed and mounted so as to successively pivot two vertical grids 5.
The vertical grids which can be made to pivot 90 ′, usefully have, in a vertical section, an L-shaped section, so that, during the pivoting of the grid, the latter rejects floating objects of which one dimension is greater than 4 cm, for example, on a horizontal grid 8 placed in the center of the installation, above the skimming cone (s) 3.
EMI3.1
Such a floating object is represented by way of example by the reference 9.
To prevent floating objects from entering inside the perimeter defined by the vertical grids 5, for the time necessary for the pivoting of one or two vertical grids 5, an air jet curtain is provided tablet directed along a plane which constitutes an obstacle to the possible passage of floating objects in the direction of the skimming cone 3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
It should be noted that the axis of rotation of the vertical grids 5 can be constituted by the tubular profile forming part of the frame of the installation.
From the description which has just been given of an installation according to the invention, it will appear that the latter solves the problems mentioned in the preamble by using simple and perfectly reliable technical means.
It is obvious that the invention is not limited to the embodiment which has just been given therein and that many modifications could be made to it provided that these fall within the scope of the appended claims.
