<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
EMI4.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Method for valorising and possibly processing pot slag.
This invention relates to a method of valorizing pot slag.
Such snails are created during steel fabrication. For example, in the steel converter industry, on the one hand, so-called LD slag originates in the converter process itself, which belong in the ternary system CaO-SiO-FeO and, on the other hand, steel slag referred to as pot or casting slag in the connected pot or secondary metallurgy, which pot or casting slag can be classified in the ternary system CaO-SiO2-A12O3.
These pot slag are formed when the raw steel runs out into the pot. The crude steel is deoxidized in the pot, for example with aluminum, and brought to the desired composition by adding ferroalloys such as FeMn or FeSi. During this step, the molten steel is formed at temperatures of about 16500C
EMI1.1
up to 1680 C non-metallic chemical compounds such as SiO O, and complex mixed oxides composed thereof. To absorb these non-metallic chemical compounds, lime is added when the crude steel runs out. The pot slag formed from this is used in the further treatment of the crude steel.
For example, to desulfurize the steel and achieve a high oxidic degree of purity, the pot slag is adjusted to a lime saturation degree of about one, which means that the pot slag is saturated with lime.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Depending on the application of the pot treatment possibilities of the crude steel, pot slags with more or less Al 2 O 3 or with different contents of sulfide-bound sulfur can be obtained at the end of the treatment and the degree of reduction of the pot slags can also be different.
The ferrous material is normally largely recovered from these coarse mail slags.
After removing the ferrous material, these pot slags therefore typically have the following chemical composition, expressed in weight percent on dry product: 0 to 15, SiO 2 20 to 40% Al 2 O 3 35 to 60% CaO (including free lime expressed as CaO) 0 to 15% MgO 0 to 1% TiO 0 to 2'Na20 and K20 0 to 3% S--

% FePot snails are so-called self-splitting or falling apart snails. Due to the usually relatively high amount of free lime, these pot slugs cannot be used in road construction, for example.
It is known that some of it can be used as a calcareous fertilizer, but the largest
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
part of it is disposed of as waste, which is expensive and a burden on the environment.
The object of the invention is a method for valorising these pot slugs, wherein these pot slugs no longer have to be dumped as waste but can be used economically in an industrial process.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by using these pot slag, from which preferably the ferrous material has been largely removed, as a raw material for glass production.
Technical glass, such as ordinary flat glass and hollow glass, consists mainly of SiO2, A9203 and alkali and alkaline earth oxides.
An essential factor in the manufacture of this glass is the melting power, which mainly depends on the melting speed.
This melting rate is determined by physical parameters of the raw materials such as their homogeneity and their grain spectrum, but also to a substantial extent by the chemical composition of the raw materials used.
It is known because of the advantages obtained from the usual natural raw materials for the manufacture of glass, such as quartz sand as Sis 2 component and limestone marble, calcite or dolomite as CaO and MgO component, and increasingly industrial secondary substances such as glass shards or even slag. such as blast furnace slag or phosphorus slag.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
EMI4.1
The chemical constituents of CaO, Silo2, Al2O3 and the sulfur, which exist as sulphide, are useful as active components for melting glass.
It is known, inter alia from DE-C-23 44 324, to use treated blast furnace slag as a raw material for glass production. These blast furnace slags are clearly different from the aforementioned pot slag, not only by their origin but also by their composition.
The blast furnace slag is the residue from the melting process of pig iron ore and coke from which the liquid iron has disappeared, while the slag slag is formed at a much later stage as the residue from the reaction of added reagents with molten iron. Blast furnace slag contains more than 30% Al 2 O 2 and much less than 20% Al 2 O 3 while, as already mentioned, pot slag contain less than 15% SiO 2 and more than 20% Al 2 O 3.
DE-C-24 35 043 describes the use of silicate-containing slag from phosphorus production as a raw material for glass production. These snails also differ not only from pot snails because of their origin, but mainly because of their composition. They contain more than 40% 502 and less than 10% Al2 O3. By adding pot slag, the amount of the aforementioned natural aluminum-containing raw materials can be reduced. These pot snails are easily meltable. The sulphides in the pot slag accelerate the melting of the mixture of raw materials, which increases the melting capacity and / or improves the molten glass quality.
The pot snails cause only a melt loss of less than 1%, compared to natural raw materials such as, for example
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
dolomite (45% melt loss) and limestone (more than 40% melt loss).
Any residual traces of ferrous material can be removed from the pot slag in advance if discoloration of the glass is to be avoided.
Reduced pot snails are preferably used,
EMI5.1
these are pot slag with a low content of SiO, Fe and chromates, but with a high content of Al2O3 and sulphidic sulfur from the ternary slag system CaO-SiO2-A12O3, for example with pre-melted calcium aluminate phases.
Such pot slags can be produced deliberately, for example in a vacuum treatment of crude steel in a pot stand degassing device or in a slag-intensive pot treatment with a flushing gas lance.
An intensive mixing of the crude steel and pot slag is thereby obtained, so that the metallurgical reactions between the steel and the slag end at almost the thermodynamic equilibrium. Due to the high kinetic energy introduced into the pot, the chemical compounds which can be reduced by, for example, aluminum, such as SiO, and Fe oxide, are almost completely converted quantitatively.
This creates pot slugs up to three times higher
EMI5.2
Al203 content than blast furnace slag.
Steel desulfurization with CaO-AlO slag also produces slag with a sulfur content in sulfidic form between 1 and 2.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The invention also relates to a method of processing pot slag to make them particularly suitable for the aforementioned application according to the invention.
This processing method is characterized by the fact that the crystallized pot slag is broken and sieved until a fraction remains with a maximum grain size of 1000 micrometers.
Preferably, residual traces of ferrous material are previously removed from the crystallized pot slag by magnetic separation.
With the insight to better demonstrate the features of the invention, preferred embodiments of a method for valorising and optionally processing pot slag according to the invention are described below, by way of example without any limiting character.
Between 0.1 and 30 wt.% Are added to a mixture of raw materials for glass production, which mainly consists of sand, lime, dolomite and feldspar. %, in particular between 2 and 4 wt. %, crystallized pot slag and added.
Preferably, reduced pot slags are added with a low content of SiO, Fe and chromates and a high content of Al 2 O 3 and sulfidic sulfur with pre-melted calcium aluminate phases.
These pot slag originate from the vacuum processing of raw molten iron into high-grade steel and, after largely removing the ferrous material, typically have the following composition (by weight and on a dry matter basis):
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
0 to 15, Si02 20 to 40% Al2O3 35 to 60% CaO and free lime 0 to 15% MgO 0 to 1% Tir 2 0 to 2% Na2O and K20 0 to 3'S--

Preferably, in the aforementioned composition, the content of CaO and free lime is between 45 and 60% and the content
EMI 7.2
to SiO2 between 0 and 10 If discoloration of the glass is to be avoided, residual traces of ferrous material or metal iron are removed in advance by magnetic separation.
The grain size of the added crystallized pot slag should be less than or equal to 1000 micrometers to avoid the risk of glass failure due to any irregular chemical composition in the larger grains.
If necessary, the crystallized pot slag must first be pre-broken and then crushed to a maximum size of about 1000 micrometers. Sieving separates the fraction to be used with a grain size smaller than or equal to 1000 microns.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
If the daily chemical analysis shows that there are unacceptable fluctuations in the composition of the pot slugs, the latter must be homogenized.
The invention will be further illustrated by the following examples.
Different pot slag were dried, broken and sieved to a grain size of maximum 1000 micrometers and homogenized. The metal iron was removed by magnetic separation.
Thus, a chemically stable, non-contaminated products were obtained with a fairly constant grain size and with the following chemical compositions (by weight and dry product calculated): Composition 1: 8.1% sis 2 28.3% Al2 O3 54% CaO and free lime 4.9% MgO
