<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
susdite.

"Core barrel, method of making and using said inner tube".
The present invention relates to an inner tube of a core barrel, in particular in the field of oil prospecting.
A person skilled in the art knows the importance of bringing a carrot to the ground for its examination, which remains, during coring, during its ascent to the surface and its transport from the coring site to in the laboratory, as intact as possible to reflect the site where it was collected as completely as possible.
Various techniques have already been used to best preserve the integrity of the sampled carrots.
It is for example known to coat the carrot, during coring, with a coating fluid, in the form of a gel, "extruded" on the periphery of the carrot. This gel can be introduced into pores of the carrot and it can be considered as dirtying at least the peripheral surface of the carrot, down to the pores and cracks, and as difficult to remove from the carrot in the laboratory.
It is also known to provide the inner wall of the inner tube with a spongy coating intended to capture fluids contained in the core and which try to escape as the core enters the inner tube or rises to the surface. In this case, the sponge coating is most often presature with a special liquid. The latter, less polluting than the coring fluid itself
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
says, give way, when the time comes, to the fluids in the carrot. A disadvantage of this technique stems from the fact that, due to its relatively great flexibility, the spongy coating presents only a reduced possibility of correctly guiding the core, or debris thereof, in the inner tube.
Then, the carrot can deviate rather towards a side instead of progressing along the axis of the interior tube and can get stuck on this side, in the spongy coating, and / or tear off this one by pushing it upwards until possibly block the correct progress of the carrot.
The object of the present invention is to remedy the aforementioned drawbacks, and to provide an inner tube, an internal coating of which can, without contaminating the core, retain the fluids which it contains and which would lose while progressing in the inner tube and which, good mechanical resistance and an automatic orientation arrangement, correctly guide the core in this same inner tube.
To this end, according to the invention, the internal face of the inner tube is coated with bristles pointing therefrom towards the inside of the inner tube.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the bristles are arranged so that at least a large quantity of them point towards the longitudinal axis of the inner tube and, in the free state, they are inclined by preferably, with respect to this axis, in a direction corresponding to a direction of penetration of a core in the inner tube during coring.
The present invention also relates to a method of manufacturing an inner core barrel according to the invention.
According to the invention, the method comprises: - making a support of a material
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
chosen so that it can be introduced into the inner tube, - a fixing, on one face of the support, of the aforementioned bristles, and - a fixing of the support in the inner tube, the face carrying the bristles being turned towards the longitudinal axis of the inner tube.
The present invention also relates to the use of an inner core barrel according to the invention. according to the invention, said use comprises: - an installation of the inner tube in a corer comprising an outer tube and a coring ring, if necessary by matching the direction of inclination of the bristles to the direction of entry of a carrot into the inner tube during coring, - a coring operation according to a usual mode, and - removal of the core from the inner core tube, or from sections of the inner core tube, possibly either by pushing it into the direction of its entry into the inner tube either by cutting it, or the sections thereof, in particular parallel to its longitudinal axis.
Other details and particularities of the invention will emerge from the secondary claims and from the description of the drawings which are annexed to the present specification and which illustrate, by way of nonlimiting example, an embodiment of the inner tube of the invention.
Figure 1 shows schematically and with broken, in a longitudinal section along the axis, an inner tube of the invention and a section of carrot present in the inner tube.
Figure 2 shows schematically, without scale, a step in a method of manufacturing a tube
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
interior according to the invention and a variant of this process.
Figure 3 shows, in the same manner as that of Figure 2, a subsequent step in the same manufacturing process and its variant.
Figure 4 shows, in the same manner as that of Figures 2 and 3, the inner tube resulting from the above process and its variant.
In the various figures, the same reference notations designate identical or analogous elements.
An inner tube 1 (FIG. 1), known per se, is preferably regularly coated, on its face 2, according to the invention, with bristles 3 pointing from this face 2 towards the inside 4 of the tube 1.
Preferably, the bristles 3 are arranged so that at least a large quantity of them point towards the longitudinal axis 5 of the inner tube 1. Advantageously, in the free state the bristles 3 are inclined, with respect to this axis 5, in a direction of penetration S of a core 6 in the inner tube 1 during coring. The core 6, thus surrounded during its penetration, is regularly guided on its periphery by a continuous carpet of bristles 3 and it is then caused to progress along the axis 5.
The bristles 3 are preferably made of a material having a degree of rigidity such that they have and / or generally maintain a predetermined direction of departure in the absence of a core 6 in the inner tube 1.
The bristles 3 are advantageously made of an oleophilic material, for example to retain hydrocarbons contained in the core and lost by it as it enters the inner tube 1 and / or lost by the core while it is enclosed in this tube 1. The material of the bristles 3 can
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
be hydrophobic so as not to retain an aqueous liquid such as a special liquid presaturating the hydrocarbon trap constituted by the set of bristles 39. Polypropylene can be used for the manufacture of bristles 3 since it meets the criteria of oleophilic and hydrophobic material.
When choosing an oleophilic material, one obtains for example a resistance to a migration of hydrocarbons with respect to their original position along the axis of the core 6.
By choosing a hydrophobic material, the risk of invasion of the hydrocarbon trap, constituted by all of the bristles 39, is also reduced by coring liquid which otherwise could tend to rise in the tube 1 along the carrot 6.
The bristles 3 may each have, as regards their dimensions, a shape of preferably narrow ribbon.
The bristles 3 can be fixed on a support 7 which is itself fixed in the inner tube 2, for example at their anterior ends (not shown) of tube 1 and of support 7 if the latter does not have a tendency to become tighten around the core 6 as it enters it, or for example over the entire common length of the support 7 and the inner tube 1 if such a tendency to tighten must be counteracted (anterior and posterior being to be considered relative in the direction of operation of a corer while cutting a carrot).
The support 7 may have the shape of a strip to be fixed in the inner tube 1 and whose width, for example, corresponds to the internal perimeter of the inner tube 1 which is not filled. Then the length of the strip can be aligned parallel to the longitudinal axis 5.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The support 7 may have a strip shape to be fixed in the inner tube 1 in which it is placed in a helix, preferably with contiguous turns.
The support 7 may however advantageously have a shape of sleeve adapted to the inside diameter of the inner tube.
The bristles 3 can be chosen and arranged to slightly press the carrot 6 around its periphery.
If necessary, the bristles 3 can be greased before their use in a coring operation.
The material of the bristles 3 can be chosen as a function of a low coefficient of friction with the material of the carrot 6. By this and by an orientation of the bristles whose free end points towards the rear end of the corer, it is possible to obtain little or no resistance to the penetration of the core 6 in the tube 1 (direction S) and on the other hand a certain resistance to a displacement in the opposite direction of the core 6 in the tube 1, for example because the bristles 13 then caught against the grain pile up between the core 6 and the tube 1. This packing can also favorably oppose that fluids contained in the core migrate towards the anterior end of the core barrel.
A method of manufacturing the inner tube 1 according to the invention may comprise an embodiment of a support 7 made of a material chosen so that it can be introduced into the inner tube 1, a fixing of the abovementioned bristles 3 on one face of the support 7 and a fixing of the support 7 in the inner tube 1, the face carrying the bristles 3 facing the longitudinal axis 5 of the inner tube 1.
The manufacturing method may further comprise an embodiment of the support 7 in the form of a flexible sleeve, an attachment of the bristles 3 to the external surface (at this time) of the support 7 or sleeve, and a
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
subsequent internal to external reversal and vice versa of the support 7 or sleeve provided with bristles and, then, an introduction and a fixing of the support 7 or sleeve returned in the internal tube 1.
The present invention also relates to the use of the inner tube 1 of the invention, this use comprising, according to the invention: - an installation of the inner tube 1 in a corer comprising an outer tube and a coring ring (not shown and known per se), where appropriate by matching the direction of inclination of the bristles 3 to the direction of entry S of a core 6 into the inner tube 1 during coring, - a coring operation according to a usual mode, and - a withdrawal of the core 6 from the inner tube 1 of coring or sections thereof, possibly either by pushing it in the direction of its entry into the tube 1 or by cutting the inner tube 1 or sections of it- ci, in particular parallel to its longitudinal axis 5.
It appears from reading the above that the coating of bristles 3 from the inside of the tube 1 has a very favorable action both for an axial load and for a radial that this coating undergoes by the action of a core 6, unlike a sponge coating which is inadequate to take up a pure radial load (for example during transport in a horizontal position) and which is easily damaged when there is a combination of axial and radial loads. It also then appears that the core 6 itself is now ideally supported axially and radially by the coating of bristles 3 as soon as it is taken over by the latter, that is to say at the bottom of the hole, with favorable consequences as to its quality.
The rigidity given to the bristles, and in particular the density of their implantation, makes it possible to advantageously adjust the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
characteristics of this support, so as to best adapt it to the nature of the formations crossed.
It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments described and that many modifications can be made to these without departing from the scope of the present invention.
Thus, another method of manufacturing the inner tube 1 can comprise (FIGS. 2 to 4, left-hand parts) an arrangement of a degradable peripheral layer 10 on the external periphery of a mandrel 11. By degradable, it should be understood that later this layer 10 can be completely removed without leaving any unwanted residue on the bristles 3 or other components of the finished inner tube 1. It may for example be a wax which can be removed by melting. Other suitable materials, which may be
EMI8.1
eliminated by fusion and / or by chemical attack and / or by machining, etc., can be taken into consideration.
Layer 10 may possibly be formed by several superimposed layers (not shown).
In the degradable layer 10, a portion of each bristle 3 is then fixed so that at least one of the ends of the bristles protrudes from this layer 10, on the face of the latter away from the mandrel. 11. This fixing can be carried out before or after the layer 10 has been arranged on the mandrel 11.
Then, the peripheral layer 10 provided with the bristles 3 and arranged on the mandrel 11 is covered with a coating 12 in which the protruding ends of each bristle are fixed 3. As soon as this new fixation is made, there may be a shrinkage d '' a mandrel 11 and a degradation of the degradable peripheral layer 10 until it is entirely eliminated and thus freeing the aforementioned part of each bristle 3, said coating 12 constituting the inner tube 1 provided, inside, with bristles 3 which attached to it by their ends
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
above. The coating may for example be a synthetic resin material reinforced with fiberglass.
According to this other method (FIGS. 2 to 4, right-hand parts), the mandrel 11, the degradable peripheral layer 10 and the coating 12 are advantageously cylindrical and preferably coaxial. In addition, the fixing of each pile 3 in the degradable peripheral layer 10 can be carried out by: - an arrangement therein of a pile 3A of double length folded in half in its middle 15, this medium 15 being stuck in said layer 10, until it is substantially flush with the mandrel 11, and possibly, - after the mandrel 11 has been removed and before the degradable peripheral layer 10 has degraded, machining thereof so as to remove a film therefrom internal at the same time as the middle 15 of the bristles 3A of double length until releasing two bristles each time
3 independent.
According to yet another process (not shown), for the manufacture of an inner tube 1 of the invention, it is possible to: - produce an inner tube 1 provided, in its peripheral wall, with multiple through holes, distributed over the periphery of the inner tube 1 and preferably oriented substantially towards the axis thereof, - an arrangement, around the inner tube 1 of an injection member, and - an injection, using said member , of an optionally thermoplastic material of bristle through the multiple holes so as to form inside the inner tube 1, by appropriate hardening of the material, said bristles fixed in the multiple through holes.
In addition, the bristles 39 can be at least partially hollow and / or porous.
