<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Composite material for medical, cosmetic and sports purposes and methods of manufacture"
This invention relates to a composite material for medical, cosmetic and sports purposes.
In the medical sector, in particular, the application of pharmaceuticals in whatever form to them under a regularly dispersed pressure, has a need for an elastic material that does not tear and does not cause the skin to thrust locally. A similar need also arises in the beauty care sector and in the sports world.
In order to make this possible in accordance with the invention, the composite material according to the invention consists of an elastic support which is coated with silicone at least on one side.
In a preferred embodiment, the elastic support referred to above is a fabric.
According to possible variants, the elastic carrier referred to above is a knitted fabric or a non-woven, with or without an adhesive layer.
The invention also relates to the methods of manufacturing the composite material according to the invention. The composite material consists of the combination of two components, t. w. an elastic carrier and a silicone layer. The term "elastic support" includes both a fabric and a

knit, a non-woven or a thermoplastic film. Hereafter, therefore, the term "elastic carrier" will always be used. The term silicone stands for medical silicone, whether or not mixed with herbs, vitamins, medicinal substances or creams.
Since the composite material according to the invention results from an intimate combination of an elastic carrier with a silicone, a method has been developed which makes it possible to form the elastic carrier and the silicone into a homogeneous whole. The elastic carrier according to the invention can be provided with an adhesive on one side.
A possible method that allows to realize a composite material that meets these different requirements consists of the following steps: a) the elastic carrier is glued or coated on a self-adhesive non-deformable foil, whereby the elastic carrier temporarily retains the solid form of the self-adhesive foil ; b) a layer of silicone is applied to the elastic carrier thus kept taut and, if necessary, spread out to the desired thickness; c) the self-adhesive film with the elastic support and the silicone spread thereon is vacuumed, thereby ensuring regular penetration of the silicone layer into the elastic support; d) after the step described under c) a composite material is created which is used in the medical, paramedical and cosmetic sectors as well as in the sports world.
A repeat of the steps mentioned under b, c and d can be performed on a fabric

with adhesive so that the composite material can be used as silicone plasters.
Another possible method consists of the following steps: a) an elastic support with the silicone applied thereon is rolled through a heat source, such as an open oven; d) the substantially baked silicone layer is taken from the heat source and rolled with a non-stick layer such as a plastic film or butter-free paper and stored in the rolled form for several hours until it can be determined that the silicone layer is a smooth elastic layer intimate with the elastic carrier.
The composite material that is produced according to the methods described here has a very high elasticity, does not tear, but above all with this material an extremely regular distribution of the pressure on the skin can be obtained. In the area of the nose or for other reasons the composite material cannot reach the skin, a filler material may be used at these locations to transmit the pressure of the composite material locally to the skin. Such filling materials are known and consist of thermoplastics which can be deformed at the required temperature and which harden at room temperature.
With the composite material according to the invention, pressure clothing can be tailor-made with precision.
Medical, sports or cosmetic pressure clothing includes gloves, masks, stockings, tights, knee and ankle pads, chest bandages and other orthopedic accessories. Thanks to the structure of the composite material, all problems can arise when making medical elastic

garments are dissolved. The composite material is easy to cut or stitch.
Although the material is widely used in the medical sector, in particular in the treatment of burns and edema injuries, it also finds application in the cosmetic world in treating the skin with various beauty problems, as well as in the sports world.
Due to the intimate connection between silicone and elastic carrier, a particularly regular distribution of the pressure exerted on the skin is obtained.
It is clear that the invention is not limited to the embodiments described here and that modifications can be made thereto insofar as they fall within the scope of the appended claims.
