<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
formule (I) :
De verbindingen volgens formule (I) bevatten
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Sei., Part A, 31, 641-651 (1993).
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

BINDING COMPOSITION COMPRISING A POLYMER WITH
CYCLIC CARBONATE GROUPS AND ONE
CROSSLINKER WITH AMINE GROUPS
The invention relates to a binder composition comprising an oligomer or polymer containing cyclic carbonate groups and a crosslinker amine groups.
Such binder compositions are known from JP-A-57202317. The drawback of these binder compositions is that the reactivity between the cyclic carbonate and the amine is relatively low.
The object of the invention is to provide a binder composition, which is curable by a reaction between a cyclic carbonate and an amine, with an increased reactivity and retaining the desired properties of the coating obtained with this composition.
The invention is characterized in that the functionality of the crosslinker is 2 and in that the crosslinker contains primary amine groups linked in ss, y or 6 position to a tertiary amine group.
The functionality refers to the number of primary amine groups of the crosslinker.
The binder compositions according to the invention result in coatings with a good curing profile, improved acetone resistance, very good hardness, good adhesion and good gloss. The increased reactivity makes it possible to obtain easily stackable products after a short time.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the crosslinker contains 3-10 groups according to
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
formula (I):
NH2 - R1 - (I) wherein R1 is bonded to a tertiary amine and R1 (2-10) comprises C atoms, and the number of carbon atoms between the primary and tertiary amine is at least 2 and at most 4.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the crosslinker groups which can be represented by formula (II) include: (NH2 -R1) mN- (R2) n (II) wherein the number of carbon atoms of the branched or linear chain R1 between the primary and the tertiary amine group is a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4.
EMI2.1
R derived from an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aromatic group or a heteroatom-containing group, wherein the R group (s) optionally link multiple tertiary nitrogen atoms, -m = 1, 2 or 3 and n = 3-m.
According to a further preferred embodiment of the invention, the number of carbon atoms between the primary and tertiary amine group is 2 or 3.
Preferably R2 groups are aliphatic or cycloaliphatic, and they always comprise 2-20 carbon atoms.
Preferably, the crosslinker contains 3-12 groups of formula I.
If R2 comprises a heteroatom, it is preferably N, 0, S or P.
The molecular weight (Mw) of the crosslinker is generally between 100 and 2000 and preferably between 140 and 1000.
The compounds of formula (I) contain
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
no secondary amine groups.
The crosslinker according to the invention preferably does not contain OH groups.
Examples of suitable amine group-containing crosslinkers according to the invention are primary amine group-containing compound such as, for example, 4-cascade: 1,4-diaminobutane [4]: propylamine, trisaminoalkylamines such as, for example, tris-2aminoethylamine and trisaminopropylamine and compounds according to WO 93/1414 which contain a polymethylenediamine as the core to which acrylonitrile has been added and subsequently reduced to the primary amines.
Preferably 4-cascade 1,4-diaminobutane [4]: propylamine is used. By using this compound, which is described as DAB (PA4) in WO 93/1414, the reactivity of the primary amines is increased. WO 93/1414 is incorporated by reference in this application.
For the naming of cascade connections, see G. Newkome, Journal Pol. Sci., Part A, 31, 641-651 (1993).
If desired, the crosslinker can be blocked with, for example, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), methyl isobutyl ketone, acetone, benzaldehyde or isobuteraldehyde to improve the pot life of the resulting paint.
Preferably, the crosslinker is blocked with MEK or acetone.
A further advantage of the system according to the invention is that the presence of a catalyst is not necessary. However, it is also possible to use a catalyst such as, for example, tetramethylguanide, dimethylaminopyridine, tetrabutylammonium hydroxide or diazobicyclooctane (DABCO).
For example, cyclic carbonate-containing polymers (having 1,3-dioxolan-2-one side groups) are described in EP-A-1088.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Suitable polymers are, for example, (meth) acrylate polymers, polyesters, alkyd resins, unsaturated polyesters, polybutadienes and epoxy resins.
The polymer used is preferably a polyacrylate, a polyester or an alkyd resin.
The polymer: crosslinker weight ratio is generally between 70: 30 and 98: 2 and is preferably between 80: 20 and 96: 4.
For example, cyclic carbonate groups containing polyacrylates can be obtained by converting glycidyl methacrylate to the cyclic carbonate (GMACC) by reaction with carbon dioxide. A polyacrylate is obtained by, for example, copolymerizing GMACC according to a known method with other acrylic monomers. These polymers can be made in a suitable solvent such as toluene or can also be obtained as a dispersion in water.
Cyclic carbonate functional polyesters can be obtained by reacting glycerol carbonate with a hydroxy functional polyester via a diisocyanate. On the other hand, bisphenol-A epoxy resins can be partially (e.g. 50%) converted to the cyclic carbonate group and the remaining epoxy groups can be used for the coupling reaction between the cyclic carbonate and a carboxylic acid functional polymer.
If the bisphenol-A epoxy resins are fully converted to the cyclic carbonate, they can be used as such with the crosslinkers of the invention.
The preparation of cyclic carbonate groups containing polyacrylates can also be carried out by methods as described for example in EP-A-1088 and US-A-2967173.
If polymers containing cyclic carbonate groups are cured with the crosslinkers according to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In the present invention, coatings with urethane groups are obtained without using isocyanate groups. The curing reaction can take place at room temperature or at elevated temperature. Usually a coating is cured at a temperature between 10-150oC.
The coating can be used as a solvent paint with 50-90% solids, or emulsified in water or organic liquids.
The invention is illustrated by the following non-limiting examples.
