300 mm ; b. réchauffage des brames, pour homogénéiser leur température, jusqu'à une température élevée, comprise entre 11500C et 1300oC ; c. laminage à chaud, qui comporte une phase de dégrossissage et une phase définition, en une bande à chaud ayant une épaisseur de 1,5 mm à 4 mm ; le laminage à chaud est réalisé entièrement dans le domaine austénitique, c'est-à-dire au-delà du point Ar3 ; d. décapage de la bande à chaud ; e. premier laminage à froid, jusqu'à une épaisseur comprise entre 0,25 mm et 1 mm ;
EMI1.1
f. recuit de recristallisation, en continu ou en bobine serrée ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Method of manufacturing an ultra-thin strip of cold-rolled steel.
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing an ultra-thin strip of cold-rolled steel.
For the purposes of the present invention, an ultra-thin strip is a strip having a thickness of less than 0.50 mm, and preferably less than 0.20 mm. Such a strip is used essentially for current applications, such as the manufacture of tinplate with which the bodies of cans are produced.
Currently, this strip consists of a particularly economical steel, of the ELC-Extra Low Carbon-type which typically has the following composition: C: 0.02-0.10%; Mn: 0.10-0.50%; Al: 0.025-0.065%; N2: 0.001-0.010%, the remainder being iron with unavoidable impurities.
The conventional method of manufacturing this type of strip currently comprises the following operations: a. continuous casting of steel in slabs having a thickness of 150 mm at
300 mm; b. reheating the slabs, to homogenize their temperature, to a high temperature, between 11500C and 1300oC; vs. hot rolling, which includes a roughing phase and a definition phase, into a hot strip having a thickness of 1.5 mm to 4 mm; hot rolling is carried out entirely in the austenitic range, that is to say beyond the point Ar3; d. hot strip stripping; e. first cold rolling, to a thickness between 0.25 mm and 1 mm;
EMI1.1
f. recrystallization annealing, continuous or in a tight coil;
g. cold re-rolling to the final thickness of less than 0.25 mm, with a reduction rate of 50% maximum.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The cold manufacturing cycle, namely operations (e) to (g), is frequently called "double reduction treatment", with reference to the two cold rolling operations.
The properties required of a strip of this type are on the one hand the resistance, namely the elastic limit and the breaking load, and on the other hand the ductility, represented essentially by the elongation. The surface finish is also an important property of the strip.
The resistance level results from the entire manufacturing process, and in particular from the reduction rate of the second cold rolling operation. The ductility also depends on the reduction rate during the last cold rolling, as well as on the aging sensitivity of the final product.
In this regard, it is known that the aging of a product is partly due to the presence of soluble nitrogen, which precipitates over time in the form of nitride A1N and causes a loss of ductility of the product. The aging of steel can be combated by different methods.
A first method consists in limiting the heating temperature of the slabs to a level such that the dissolution of the nitride A1N does not occur. The disadvantage of this method is that it no longer makes it possible to guarantee hot rolling entirely in the austenitic domain, which inevitably leads to heterogeneous structures and to irregularities in the dimensions of the hot strips.
It is also possible to stabilize nitrogen in the form of nitrides by the addition of elements such as titanium or boron. These elements are however very expensive and their use is incompatible with the need to keep the cost price of steel very low.
Finally, the winding temperature of the hot strips can be increased above 700. C, so as to precipitate in the form of the nitride A1N all the nitrogen previously dissolved during the initial reheating. However, too high winding temperatures lead to hetero
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
sponges along and across bands as well as the formation of an oxide layer of excessive thickness. In addition, winding temperatures close to 700 ° C. give rise to the formation of very coarse cementite, which deteriorates the surface condition of very thin products.
The current procedure therefore results from a compromise considered hitherto optimal: the slabs are heated to a temperature sufficient to carry out hot rolling entirely in the austenitic domain, and the strips are hot-rolled at a temperature e 550 C at 600 ° C. so as to precipitate part of the nitrogen in the form of the nitride AIN without any coalescence of the cementite occurring beyond a certain size.
This procedure nevertheless has the drawback that the steel remains aging, since it contains soluble nitrogen, with the consequence of a reduction in the ductility of the final product after cold rolling.
The object of the present invention is to propose a process for manufacturing an ultra-thin strip of cold-rolled steel, not aging, the dimensional tolerances of which are strictly observed, and in which the cementite is finely dispersed. Such a strip is particularly suitable for the manufacture of tinplate.
According to the present invention, a method of manufacturing an ultra-thin strip of cold-rolled steel, in which the steel is subjected to a hot rolling comprising a roughing rolling and a finishing rolling, and at least a cold rolling step, is characterized in that a steel slab is heated to a temperature between A3 and 1150 C, in that the roughing rolling of this slab is carried out in the field austenitic, that is to say with an end-of-rolling temperature equal to or greater than Ag, in order to form a blank, in that said blank is rapidly cooled to a temperature between 800.
C and 400OC, in that the final rolling of this blank is carried out to a thickness of 0.5 mm to 2 mm with an end-of-finishing rolling temperature of between 750. C and 300. C, to form a hot strip, in that one
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
coils said strip hot at a temperature between 65O. C and 200. C, and in that this strip is subjected to hot at least one cold rolling step to the desired final thickness, with a total reduction rate less than or equal to 95%.
Contrary to previous practice, the heating of the slab can be limited to a temperature such that the nitride AIN is not dissolved. For the type of steel envisaged here, the reheating temperature is advantageously between (AC3 + 50 ° C.) and 1050 ° C. Furthermore, this temperature is sufficient to avoid reheating in the intercritical phase, that is to say austenitic + ferritic, or in the ferritic phase, which would lead to the formation of very coarse cementite on the hot-rolled strip.
The roughing rolling is carried out in the austenitic field, to form a blank whose thickness varies according to the thickness of the final product to be manufactured. To fix ideas, the thickness of the blank is generally between 20 mm and 50 mm.
Between the rough rolling and the finishing rolling, the blank is cooled so as to effect the phase transformation of the austenite into ferrite. The cooling rate conditions, in known manner, the size of the ferritic grain, the size and the dispersion of the cementite islands or of the residual austenite islands. An accelerated cooling of the blank is therefore carried out, in order to obtain a fine and dispersed cementite and therefore a homogeneous ferritic structure. The duration of this cooling is advantageously less than 30 seconds.
This duration obviously depends on the temperature to which the blank has been cooled and which will be the temperature at the start of the finish rolling in the ferritic field. Depending on the value of this temperature, a finely dispersed residual ferrite + austenite mixed structure is obtained or a ferritic structure containing finely dispersed cementite. The mixed structure corresponds to the upper part of the above-mentioned temperature range of 8OO. C-500. C, while the ferritic structure corresponds to the lower part of this temperature range.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
When the blank has reached the desired temperature, the finishing rolling is carried out in the ferritic field, to produce a hot strip having a thickness of between 0.5 mm and 4 mm, and preferably between 0.5 mm and 2 , 5 mm. The finish rolling is carried out without waiting for the coalescence of the islands of residual austenite or cementite.
Optionally, the strip is cooled while hot to the winding temperature. This is preferably between 250 ° C and 400 * C.
The thin hot strip is then cold rolled, generally in two operations, to a final thickness of less than 0.50 mm, and preferably less than 0.20 mm.
During the first cold rolling operation, the strip thickness is reduced to less than 0.5 mm, and preferably to less than 0.35 mm, with a reduction rate of less than 90%.
The second cold rolling operation gives the strip its thickness and its final properties, with a reduction rate of less than 50% and preferably less than 30%.
The process of the invention is illustrated by several examples of implementation, the characteristics and results of which are collated in the table which follows. For comparison, this table also includes the results obtained by a process of the prior art.
In this table, the columns have the following meaning:
1) N *: example number.
Examples 1 to 5 relate to the invention (+); The example
6 refers to a prior process.
2) TR slab reheating temperature.
3) TD end of roughing rolling temperature.

6) thickness of the hot strip.
7) th thickness of the cold strip after the first cold rolling operation.

8) efr2: thickness of the cold strip after the second cold rolling operation.

9) Re (NV): elastic limit of the non-aged cold strip.
10) Rr (NV): breaking load of the non-aged cold strip.
11) A (NV): elongation of the non-aged cold strip.
12) Re (V): elastic limit of the cold strip after aging from 50 days to 50. C.
13) Rr (V): breaking load of the cold strip after aging for 50 days at 50 ° C.
14) A (V): elongation of the cold strip after aging for 50 days at 50 °. vs.
In all cases, the cold strip produced by the process of the invention has been found to be insensitive to aging. This characteristic, due to the limited heating temperature of the slab, results in a remarkable stability of the mechanical properties, in particular of the elongation and therefore of the ductility of the strip. This result is not achieved by the prior method. In addition, the ductility is significantly higher by the method of the invention than by the previous method, which promotes the use of the cold strip produced according to the invention.
Example 4 relates to the particular case of a strip which has undergone only one cold rolling operation from a hot strip recrystallized by continuous direct annealing. The cold strip obtained also has very favorable properties, as regards strength, ductility and aging. It thus appears that, by using a very thin hot strip with a work hardened structure, the process of the invention makes it possible, for certain ranges of final thicknesses, to eliminate a cold rolling operation without harming the properties of the strip to be cold obtained.
In general, a steel strip hot rolled by the process of the invention is distinguished by the absence of aging, as well as by a very low yield strength and breaking load in the case where the laminated structure in the ferritic domain completely recrystallizes, i.e. if the rolling temperature (TF 700 C) and / or
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
if the winding temperature (Ta> 550. C) are high enough.
In all other conditions, steel, also not aging, is characterized by a ferritic microstructure with elongated grain, partially or totally restored. Whatever the state of the structure of the hot strip, the cementite is finely dispersed there.
At the cold rolling stage, two cases can arise. On the one hand, the use of a very thin hot strip with a hardened or recrystallized structure makes it possible either to reduce the overall reduction rate when cold (example 4), or to reach a final thickness of less than 0.15 mm (example 5). On the other hand, the use of a softer hot strip than conventional hot strips laminated in the austenitic field, makes it possible to start with a thicker hot strip because it allows a total reduction rate to higher cold (examples 1-3).
