<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

De uitvinding zal nu nader toegelicht worden aan de hand van de figuren waarin : - FIGUUR 1 een globaal zieht geeft van een transmissie- riem en een aandrijfwiel ; - FIGUUR 2 een dwarsdoorsnede geeft volgens vlak 11-11 van FIGUUR 1 ; - FIGUUR 3 een dwarsdoorsnede geeft van een staalkoord bestemd om een transmissieriem te versterken ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc / Clms Page number 1>
The invention relates to a toothed transmission belt reinforced with steel cord.
Due to the absence of creep, steel cord is a suitable reinforcement material for transmission belts.
Such steel cord usually has the following composition: a minimum carbon content of 0.65%, for example 0.75 or 0.80%; a manganese content ranging between 0.40 and 0.70%; a silicon content ranging between 0.15 and 0.30% and a maximum sulfur and phosphorus content of 0.03%. Microalloy elements such as copper, chrome, nickel, vanadium and boron are also possible. Due to the small diameters (see below), the chosen wire rod preferably exhibits a high degree of purity: The number and size of the non-metallic inclusions is preferably limited (e.g. size <0.10 ssm).
Transmission belts are under an axial tension ranging from 10 to 100 Newtons. Furthermore, transmission belts must be able to undergo a large number of rotations. With each rotation, the transmission belt bends around a guide wheel or around a drive wheel. The radius of curvature of this bend is relatively small for some applications. Another requirement is that the transmission belt should run centrally in the guide wheels and show no tendency to rub against any of the upstanding edges of the guide wheels.
If the guide wheels have no edges, the transmission belt should not tend to run off the wheels.
The following are the requirements for the steel cord reinforcement: The steel cord must have good tensile strength, good flexibility, high bending strength.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
level of fatigue and the steel cord must, after all, be torsion-free, the latter requirement being to allow the transmission belt to run centrally in the grooves of the guide wheels or to prevent the transmission belt from running off the wheels.
Until now, so-called m x n strand constructions have been used as steel cord reinforcement for transmission belts. Such a steel cord consists of m strands, and each strand consists of n filaments. If the strands, as such, are twisted in the S direction, then the strands are twisted together in a Z direction to form a cord to achieve the desired torque balance. Examples of such cords are a 3x3 construction, a 7x3 construction, a 7x4 construction and a 7x7 construction.
The existing string constructions are flexible and torsion-free, but for applications where transmission belts have to work under extreme conditions, the tensile strength and the bending fatigue level sometimes leave the wishes.
The present invention aims to improve the drawbacks of the prior art.
The invention provides a toothed transmission belt reinforced with steel cord, wherein the steel cord is arranged substantially in the longitudinal direction of the transmission belt and consists of at least four and at most twenty eight filaments with a diameter between 0.04 mm and 0.20 mm, preferably between 0.04mm and 0.15mm. The steel cord has a geometrically regular structure in cross section. The structure consists of a central core of one or more filaments surrounded by at least one layer of filaments. With a geometric regular structure
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
meant that the cross-sections of the filaments are arranged in a nearly symmetrical manner.
The number of filaments must be at least four, otherwise it is difficult to obtain a geometrically stable core-layer structure. Above twenty-eight filaments, it is further difficult to control the geometry of the cross-sections and to arrive at regular cross-sections.
The diameter should be limited to a maximum of 0.20 mm due to the required flexibility.
The filaments of the core are usually of equal diameter. The filaments of each layer are also usually of equal diameter. The diameter of the core filaments can be equal to the diameter of the layer filaments. However, this is not necessary. It mainly depends on the number of filaments in the core and in the layers. The direction of twist in the core and in the layers can be the same or different.
Preferably, several steel cords lie in a plane next to each other without however touching each other.
If the transmission belt consists of a polymer such as polyurethane, the steel cord is covered with a corrosion-resistant coating such as zinc or a zinc alloy, for example zinc-aluminum or zinc-nickel.
If the transmission belt consists of rubber, the steel cord is preferably covered with a coating which adheres to the rubber, such as, for example, brass, copper, bronze, or complex copper-containing coatings (binary and ternary copper alloys).
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In an embodiment of the invention, the steel cord consists of a core surrounded by a layer of filaments. Examples of such versions are: - 1x0. 15 + 6x0. 15 - 3x0. 08 + 6x0. 15 - 3x0. 08 + 9x0. 08
EMI4.1
- 3x0. + 9x0. In another embodiment of the invention, the steel cord consists of a core surrounded by two layers of filaments.
Examples of such versions are: - 1x0. 15 + 6x0. 15 + 12x0. 15 - 3x0. 08 + 9x0. 08 + 15x0. 08 Preferably, all filaments of a steel cord from the core and from the layer or layers are twisted in the same direction and with the same step such that they have line contacts along the length of the steel cord and along substantially the full length of the steel cord. However, the twist direction of a steel cord is preferably opposite to the twist direction of an adjacent steel cord, this to compensate any torsions of one steel cord still present by the torsions of an adjacent steel cord and thus to obtain a torsion-free composite.
The invention will now be explained in more detail with reference to the figures, in which: - FIGURE 1 gives a general view of a transmission belt and a driving wheel; - FIGURE 2 shows a cross section according to plane 11-11 of FIGURE 1; - FIGURE 3 shows a cross section of a steel cord intended to strengthen a transmission belt;

EMI5.1
- FIGURE 4 gives a schematic representation of how the torsional behavior of a steel cord is measured. - FIGURE 5 gives a schematic representation of how the bending fatigue level of a steel cord is determined.
Referring to FIGURES 1 and 2, 1 represents a transmission belt reinforced by a plurality of steel cords 2 lying in a plane side by side.
The steel cords 2 are 12x0. cords, consisting of a core of three filaments 22 of 0. mm diameter surrounded by a layer of nine filaments 24 of 0. mm. All of a steel cord are twisted in the same direction, with the same step of 4 mm. As can be seen from the arrows 28, the twist direction of a steel cord 2 'is opposite to the twist direction of an adjacent steel cord 2 ", the twist direction of steel cord 2" is to the twist direction of steel cord 2 ", etc.
The transmission belt 1 is driven via the teeth 12 by a drive wheel 4 which is also provided with teeth 42. The transmission belt 1 must be centrally located between the upright edges 44 of the drive wheel and must not tend to rub against one of the edges 44.
Transmission belts can be manufactured by an extrusion process or by an injection molding process.
In FIGURE 3, another type of steel cord 2 has been proposed to strengthen transmission belts. The steel cord 2 consists of a core filament 22, an intermediate layer of filaments 24 and an outer layer of filaments 26. All filaments have a diameter of 0. mm and have the same twist direction and step (10 mm). However, it is not excluded that, for example, the core filament 22 has a diameter greater than the diameter of the filaments 24 of the intermediate layer, and
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
that the diameter of the filaments 24 of the intermediate layer is greater than the diameter of the filaments 26 of the outer layer.

It follows from Table 2 that the steel cord according to the invention has a higher tensile strength than the steel cords according to the prior art.
As explained above, the ideal cord is torsion-free under axial stresses. Torsion-free steel cords prevent the transmission belt from slipping.
In FIGURE 4, a test rig is shown to measure the torsions of the steel cord under the influence of an axial tension. The steel cord 2 is taken between two clamps 62 and subjected to an axial tension by means of a weight 64 which runs over a wheel 66. Recording device 68 records the torsions.

The prior art 3x3 construction provides the smallest increase in torsions with increasing axial stresses.
However, the increase in torsions in the 3 + 9 construction according to the invention is about the same as the increase in torsions in the 7x3 construction. This is unexpected, as the 7x3 construction in Z / S is twisted to be as torsion-free as possible, while the 3 + 9 construction
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
is twisted in a single direction and it could therefore be expected a priori that the torque increase would be much greater in the 3 + 9 construction.
FIGURE 5 shows a test rig to determine the bending fatigue level of steel cords. A steel cord 2 is taken between two clamps 82 and bent over a radius of curvature R. The steel cord is then subjected to a large number of rotations. The test is then resumed for a smaller radius of curvature R. The smallest radius of curvature where no fatigue fractures occurred for 1.5x106 cycles is noted. The smaller the radius of curvature, the better the bending fatigue behavior of the steel cord.
