Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   A
 EMI2.2

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Improved insulating panels, to be used between rafters.

   The present invention relates to insulating panels for use between rafters.

   Insulation panels placed between rafters must be properly fitted between the rafters if satisfactory insulation is to be achieved. Thus, the dimensions of the known panels must correspond very closely to the distance between the rafters. In practice, however, the distance between the rafters may not be constant.

  This means that the insulating panel must be cut to the required dimensions, so that the panel can fit tightly between the rafters.

   This process requires that repeated measurements be taken of the distance between the rafters of successive pairs. In addition, it is extremely difficult and slow to cut the panel to the desired dimensions.

   The present invention attempts to reduce the disadvantages associated with the above.

   The present invention consequently provides an insulating panel to be used between rafters, the panel having a width greater than a nominal width, said panel having several slots adapted to allow the panel to be compressed, so as to fit between the rafters, and then expand to provide effective insulation.

   Multiple slots are conveniently provided longitudinally, on each of the large opposite faces of the panel.

   With the exception of a slot at one end of a slot arrangement, a slot provided on a large face of the panel is placed between a pair of slots on the opposite large side of the panel, and such a slot is ideally placed halfway between a pair of opposite slots.

   Conveniently, the slots extend into the panel for a distance which is more than half the thickness of the panel.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The panel may include flanges which are adapted to abut against the rafters when the panel is compressed between them.

   Preferably, the insulating panel is made from expanded polystyrene (EPS).

   The invention will now be described more particularly in conjunction with the attached drawing which shows, only by way of example, an embodiment of an insulating panel according to the invention.

   In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an insulating panel, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view along line II-II of Figure 1.

   Referring to the drawing, the insulating panel according to the invention is generally indicated by the reference numeral 1, and comprises flanges 2 which abut against the rafters (not shown) when the panel 1 is inserted between them. The insulating panel 1 has multiple slots 3, 3 'on a large face 5 of the insulating panel 1, and multiple slots 4, 41 on the large opposite face 6. The width of the panel 1 is the nominal width, plus an additional width approximately 10 mm; the nominal width being the width of a panel which does not include

 1 1 of slots, and which must fit between rafters separated by a given distance. Each slot 3, 3 ', 4, 41 is 4 mm wide, and extends in the panel over a distance greater than half the thickness of the panel.

   AT

 1 1 except for the 3 ', 4' slots. which find at the ends of an arrangement of slits, each slit 3, 4 is placed halfway between a pair of opposite slits.

   In order to be able to be inserted between the rafters (not shown), the insulating panel 1 is compressed in the direction indicated by the arrows A. Thanks to the multiple slots 3, 3 ', 4, 41, it takes little effort to compress the insulating panel 1. The panel 1 can by

 Therefore be inserted between rafters with the edges 2 abutting against the adjacent rafters. In place between the rafters, the insulating panel 1 will tend to react against the compression forces exerted by the rafters, and will tend to relax because of the inherent resilience of expanded polystyrene (EPS). The insulating panel 1 therefore fits tightly with the rafters, thus ensuring effective insulation.
