Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Device to compensate for the moisture and heat loss of an artificial nose.
This invention relates to a device for compensating the moisture and heat loss of an artificial nose. In the professional language, reference is often made to the abbreviation HME, namely Heatand Moisture Exchanger.
Various types of artificial noses are known which have the very serious disadvantage that they exhibit a moisture and heat loss of almost 30% in the most advantageous conditions. Such artificial noses are mainly used in anesthesia and / or artificial respiration.
The object of the invention is to overcome these and other disadvantages of the hitherto known artificial noses.
To make this possible according to the invention, the artificial nose according to the invention is equipped with an explosion-proof low-voltage heating element and with a water supply to a sponge or to a water-absorbing material with similar technical properties.
According to a first possible embodiment, the heating element referred to above is an electrical resistance.
In a preferred embodiment, the electrical resistance referred to above is a self-regulating resistance.
According to a further possible embodiment, the heating element referred to above is an N. T. C. resistance.
According to yet another possible embodiment, the heating element referred to above is a P. T. C. resistance.
In yet another possible embodiment, the heating element referred to above is a resistor provided with a thermostat.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Always in accordance with the invention and in a curious embodiment, the above-mentioned water supply is ensured by a pump which receives signals from a rapidly reacting temperature sensor which detects the passage and transit time of the air administered to a patient by a respirator.
Means may be provided for sending said information to a programmer in order to act on the above-mentioned pump.
Other details and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of an apparatus for compensating the moisture and heat loss of an artificial nose, according to the invention. This description is given by way of example only and does not limit the invention. The reference numbers refer to the attached figures.
Figure 1 is a schematic side view of the device according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a front view of the device of Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows the diagram illustrating how the device according to the invention is switched on in the various lines.
The device according to the invention consists of a disposable artificial nose equipped on the inside with a self-regulating low-voltage and explosion-free resistance and a water supply.
The artificial nose recovers about 70% of the heat and moisture exhaled by the patient.
The self-regulating resistance ensures that the exhalation temperature is restored to 100% when the patient inhales. The water supply ensures that when the patient breathes in, the moisture content of the exhaled air is 100% restored.
The moisture supply is dosed by a pump of the peristaltic type preferably. This pump is controlled by a programmer that receives signals from a fast
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
responsive temperature sensor that detects the passage and passage time of the air delivered by the respirator to the patient. This air is heated by the self-regulating resistor.
The passage time of the air, which comes down to the volume transmitted, is detected by the temperature sensor. This forwards the information to a programmer who controls a pump and thus regulates the water supply in proportion to the air inhaled by the patient.
If the temperature sensor does not detect an air passage, the pump is stopped to prevent the artificial nose from filling up with water.
Referring to the above-mentioned figures, the self-regulating resistor 3 supplied with power by connector 1 is noted. The water is supplied to the open cell sponge 4 via the tube 2.
The air is admitted into the body 6 of the artificial nose, via a bacterial filter 5, while open cell sponge 4 is fed with water through the tube 2. The water is heated by the self-regulating resistor 3.
From the schematic representation according to figure 3 it can be deduced that the transformer 8 supplies the resistor 3 via line 13, the pump 7 and the programmer 11 with a lower voltage.
The temperature sensor 10 forwards information to programmer 11, which in turn controls pump 7.
Water is supplied to sponge 4 via tube 2, pump 7 and pipe 14. This water comes from the fies 9.
It is clear that the invention is not limited to the above-described embodiment and that many modifications can be made to it without departing from the scope of the patent application.
