<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Countercurrent Plate heat exchanger The present invention relates to a plate heat exchanger, which is characterized by a special design and the associated manufacturing method.
Various materials and manufacturing methods for plate heat exchangers are used in ventilation and air-conditioning, among other things.
These include: metal pressed plates, mechanically clamped between elastic seals, glass plates with (possibly glued) sealing strips and spacers with appropriate thickness; hollow drawn plastic plates that are put side by side; stacking of flat plates, with intermediate plates with an appropriate relief, etc.
Cross-flow is often used for air / air exchangers in the comfort domain, which is easier to realize with the techniques used than counterflow.
This invention presents a (partial) counterflow plate exchanger consisting of a stack of plates, e.g. in a suitable thermoplastic plastic, with a special relief, which are assembled, inter alia, by thermal welding.
If necessary, metal plates can also be used, of course with an adapted manufacturing technique.
All this is explained in the following text with accompanying figures. The latter have been kept schematic and are illustrative, without the concept being limited to the examples given.
Fig. 1 shows, in schematic view and cross sections, a plate (1) as used in the heat exchanger proposed here.
This is the so-called left version. In addition, there is also a right-hand version (2): just the mirror image of (1).
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Plates (1) and (2) are nearly hexagonal, with vertices (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10). They receive a suitable relief that can be divided into different zones. In addition to two triangular zones (5, 6, 7) and (8, 9, 10) and a central rectangular zone (5, 7, 8, 10), there are the border zones (7, 8) and (5, 10), ( 6, 7) and (9, 10) and finally (5, 6) and (8, 9). This will be discussed further later.
Fig. 2 shows how a heat exchanger is assembled by a stacking of alternating left and right plates (1) and (2), so that alternating gaps (3) and (4) are created between them which will allow passage of two separate fluid flows. To this end, of course, an entrance (e.g. 5, 6) and an exit (8, 9) must be available in each slot (3), while the other peripheral zones (6, 7) (7, 8), (5, 10 ) and (10, 9) must be closed, while the plates must be kept at a regular distance (B). This is possible through a suitable relief of these plates.
The edge zones (7, 8) and (5.10) are therefore provided with a V-shaped protrusion (11) (see fig. 1) which is considerably higher than the gap width BJ and of course identical for both plate types (1) and (2) . These protrusions with a slightly conical cross-section thus fit together and thus ensure correct relative positioning of the plates when stacking.
But there is more: a complete package of plates is now neatly kept in shape by two rigid end plates and with the edges (7, 8), then (5, 10) placed on a flat hot plate.
As a result, the plate edges are heated up, they start to deform, and finally the protrusions (11) are pressed flat along (7, 8) afterwards (5, 10) and welded together. This makes the whole package a rigid whole, with flat, solid side walls (7, 8) resp. (5, 10) which completely close the slits (3) and (4).
The edges (6, 7), (9, 10) of the slits (3) (and the edges (5, 6),
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
(8, 9) of the slits (4)) must be treated very differently because the neighboring slits (4) (or (3)) must remain open.
The sealing is done here by interlocking (during stacking) a comb (13) on a plate (2) in a slot (12) in the neighboring plate (1) and vice versa (See fig 1, fig 2 ).
The relief of the slot (12) and the matching comb (13) is limited to the gap width B to be sealed, so that indeed the adjacent slots remain open.
The mechanical seal thus realized is in many cases sufficient if the plates (1) and (2) are properly supported and supported. If necessary (e.g. i.v. high fluid pressure differences), the density is improved by gluing the combs (13) in the slots (12), or by cold welding d. m. v. a suitable, possibly diluted solvent.
In order to keep the plates at a suitable distance (B) and to properly support them, the triangular zones (5, 6, 7) and (8, 9, 10) are given a relief that allows sloping inflow as indicated. For example, combs (14) can be provided parallel to the aforementioned slots (12).
In the rectangular central zone (5, 7, 8, 10) on the other hand, a relief is used that allows flow in the direction from (5-7) to (8-10) (or vice versa), while at the same time providing considerable mutual support for the plates guarantees.
Lightly zig-zagging V-slots are very suitable for this: they are shaped in such a way that the slots of neighboring plates intersect (see fit. Lez. In corners 6 and 9, plates (1) and (2) are given an extra lip ( 16) After stacking, and welding the edges (5, 10) and (7, 8) as described above, the lips (16) are folded at right angles so that they overlap, and heat welded like the edges (7, 8 ) and (5, 10) This allows correct air
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tight mounting boe in eg an air handling unit.
A metal version of the plates (1) (2) is illustrated with the section BB in fig. 3. The plate relief is very similar to what is shown in fig. 1, except that here the protrusions (11) have been replaced by an angle fold (11 ') which ensures a proper overlap with the neighboring plates. Fixing can be done here by soft soldering or gluing.
A plate package as described now shows a plane with slot inputs (5, 6) of the slits (3), a plane with slit outputs (8, 9) for the same slits (3), and on the other hand a plane with slots (9, 10) for the slits (4), a plane with exits (6, 7) for the same slits (4).
Thus, a plate heat exchanger with dominant counterflow is obtained in the central zone (5, 7, 8, 10), and local cross flow in the triangular inlet and outlet zones (5, 6, 7) and (8, 9, 10).
Possible areas of application include comfort climate control, such as: - recovery of ventilation heat - heat recovery when air is dried by surface condensation - air cooling by free evaporation in hot and dry climates.
The advantages lie in the high performance for a low cost.
The high performance (efficiency) is related to the counter-current character, which is further enhanced where one uses poorly conductive kuna fabric material.
In connection with freezing it can be noted that
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
a countercurrent device is more resistant to freezing than a crossflower with comparable efficiency, because of the greater uniformity of the outgoing air condition at the counterstromer.
Or the other way around: with equal freezing behavior, the counterstromer can achieve a higher return - with less surface area (and cost?).
These good performances are delivered at a limited cost price because of the counterflow nature on the one hand, and the relatively cheap material and the other on the other. simple, fast and therefore inexpensive manufacturing method.
This of course applies much less for high temperature applications where, for example, you have to switch to metal.
In the comfort domain, however, polystyrene foil, for example, can be used, which is inexpensive, water-resistant, weldable and recoverable.
Finally, it should be noted that larger units are easily assembled from standard "building blocks" of basic heat exchangers.
