Articulation.

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
l'articulation.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Joint.
The present invention relates to a hinge which is useful, in particular but not exclusively, in windshield wipers.
In windshield wipers, several articulations are used, in particular between the various stirrups and / or levers of the wiper blade.
The manufacture of windshield wipers gives rise to difficulties due to the very frequent need to articulate metal parts to each other. These joints tend to be noisy and are subject to degradation by wear and corrosion. Various proposals have been made to avoid these difficulties, for example, by the intercalation of plastic elements between the metal parts of the joints, but, although these proposals have given satisfaction to use, they have not not found to be entirely satisfactory from a manufacturing point of view.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved articulation which is relatively inexpensive to train and use and which avoids or alleviates some of the difficulties indicated above or all of them.
According to the invention, there is provided a hinge intended to articulate to each other a first and a second element, the first element at least being of U-shaped section at the articulation and the second coming to be housed. in the first, the articulation comprising a plastic articulation body of generally U-shaped section suitable for fitting in the first element and for receiving the second element,
the articulation body or the first

element comprising a first pair of pins suitable for cooperating with respective openings provided in the first element or in the articulation body and the articulation body comprising a second pair of pins extending inwards and cooperating with a pair aligned keyhole buttonholes provided in the outer surface of the second member.
In addition, according to the invention, there is provided a joint intended to articulate to each other a first and a second element, the first element at least being of U-shaped section at the joint and the second coming to be housed in the first, the articulation comprising a plastic articulation body of generally U-shaped section suitable for being housed in the first element and for receiving the second element in its U-shaped channel, the articulation body comprising a first pair of aligned pins capable of cooperating with respective openings aligned in the first member and a second pair of pins extending inwardly and cooperating with a pair of aligned keyhole buttonholes provided in the surfaces outer side of the second element.
All pins can be coaxial.
The second element is also preferably of U-shaped cross section in the region of the joint and its keyhole buttonholes comprise openings which pass through the material of the second element.
The invention will be described below in more detail, by way of example, with reference to the drawings in which: FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a finished joint according to the invention:
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the articulation body used in the construction of the articulation shown in FIG. 1; Fig. 3 is an exploded view of the parts of the joint shown in FIG. 1, and FIG. 4 is a sectional view of the joint along the line IV-IV of FIG. 1.
Fig. 1 of the drawings illustrates a joint 1 between two elements 2 and 3, the first of these elements, element 2, being the main stirrup 2 of the frame of a wiper blade and the second, the element - ment 3, being the secondary stirrup of the frame. The two elements 2 and 3 are articulated to each other by means of an articulation body 4 of plastic material which is illustrated in more detail in FIG. 2.
As can be seen in Fig. 2, the articulation body 4 comprises a section element in the U-shaped assembly which comprises a first pair of pins 6 which extend outwards from the side walls 7 of the profile and which are intended to cooperate with two aligned openings 8 in the main stirrup 2. A second pair of pins 9 is provided, the pins of which extend towards the inside of the side walls 7 of the profile and are intended to cooperate with keyhole buttonholes 12 provided in the second element or secondary bracket 3. These keyhole buttonholes are illustrated in FIG. 3.
The articulation body 4 is provided at one end with a part of larger dimensions 14 connected to the rest of the articulation body by a shoulder which, when the articulation is assembled, adjusts against the end.

mite from main stirrup 2 and serves both to protect the open end of the joint and to mitigate the effects of end thrust on
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the joint. In addition, it also serves as an alignment aid during assembly of the joint. It is also clear that the base and part of the sides of the articulation body 4 are cut at 18 in the middle region to increase the elasticity of the side walls.
The assembly of the joint described above will now be described.
As shown in particular in Figs. 3 and 4, the plastic articulation body 4 is pressed upwards in the U-shaped section of the main yoke 2, the larger end portion 14 of the articulation body 4 serving as a guide . The lateral wings 7 of the profiled section of the articulation body are pressed towards one another to allow the two outer pins to pass between the wings of the profiled section of the main stirrup 2. This operation can be carried out with success if an appropriate plastic

is chosen for the articulation body 4.
As soon as the articulation body 4 has been fully inserted into the main stirrup 2, the two outer pins 6 are in line with the openings 8 of the main stirrup 2 and, thanks to the elasticity of the articulation body , these pins 6 engage elastically in the openings 8, thereby fixing the articulation body 4 in the main stirrup 2. It is clear that, thanks to the shape of the articulation body 4, this articulation body 4 is rigidly attached to the main stirrup 2 and that no pivoting occurs between the articulation body 4 and the main stirrup 2.
The secondary stirrup 3 is then presented upwards in the articulation body 4 in such a way that the two inner pins 9 are engaged in the mouth 16 of the buttonholes in
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
form of keyhole 12 of the secondary caliper 3. As soon as they are in place, a force is exerted between the main and secondary calipers 2 and 3, so as to push the two inner trunnions 9, with a click effect , in the recesses 17 of the keyhole-shaped buttonholes 12, thereby fixing the secondary stirrup 3 to the articulation body 4 and, consequently, to the main stirrup 2, in a manner allowing pivoting. In the particular construction shown, it is clear that the pivoting occurs entirely between the secondary stirrup 3 and the articulation body 4.
Although in the case of an articulation for a windscreen wiper blade as shown, it is not necessary to dismantle the articulation, it is nevertheless possible to dismantle it, using the operations of assembly in reverse order, if desired.
It will be understood that various modifications can be made to the embodiments described above without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the cut parts of the base and sides of the articulation body can be omitted if desired, provided that the plastic material used retains sufficient elasticity to allow the introduction of the articulation body into the main stirrup . Instead of providing the external pins on the articulation body, the main stirrup could be provided with inwardly directed projections, produced for example by the formation of embossed bosses in the side walls of the profiled section of the main stirrup 2, the projections cooperating with recesses provided in the articulation body.
The larger end portion 14 of the articulation body can be omitted if
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
wish, because, while it is useful in the described joint, it is not essential for the proper functioning of the joint.
It should be noted that, although the invention has been described with reference to the articulation provided between a main caliper and a secondary caliper of a wiper blade mounting, it can also be applied to articulations provided between secondary stirrups and other stirrups or auxiliary levers of the frame. It should also be noted that the invention is not limited to joints in windshield wipers, but that it can be used in any circumstance in which such a joint could prove useful.
It appears from the embodiments described above, that a joint has been described which is of a relatively simple construction, which is inexpensive to manufacture and use and which makes it possible to effectively avoid the difficulties mentioned above of the joints between two metallic elements.
