Name of Applicant: *TRISTAR INDUSTRIES PTY LTD S* Name of inventor: FRANK SPIEGEL Address for Service: COLLISON CO.,117 King William Street, Adelaide, S.A. 5000 Invention Title: TWO WAY HYDRAULIC DOOR SIDE TIPPER Details of Associated Provisional Applications: PR2584 dated 1 8 th January 2001 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us: nUYllu lUY UI UI I1III"I III IIII YIIP-~ IYI YI IINII~I1~Y UI1IIII 1IU -lllil~l I~YY IIIYI~ I*YIUlnIUI(I*L PIYI~ I IIYnlY I II1IIII Y*I*IIU^IUY~~U~- IUI IY-O ~lll~ llll III--IY U lnUIIII U~ II1 I*lll- lO~li IY lll~L IYIII *I IIIIIYr VI II IIUY Y ~ie II J 111 IIIIYYIU l)~~I*UXII This invention relates to a bulk transport vehicle, more particularly to a side bulk carrier such as a side tipper trailer, and also side tipper body mounted to truck chassis.
Side tipper trailers are well known, and often they are constructed to tip from one side only. Where the load has to be discharged at a certain location, this requires the bulk trailer to be correctly positioned. Accordingly side tipper trailers which can discharge from either side are also known.
It is an object of this invention to provide a two way side tipper trailer to discharge from either side as desired.
It is a further object of this invention to prove a two way side tipper trailer of simple construction permitting the load to be discharged from either side as desired.
Thus there is provided according to the invention a two way side tipper trailer having a chassis, a tipper body mounted on said chassis, a pivot means on each side of the body and chassis whereby said body may pivot about the selected pivot means, a side door on each side of the tipper body, a side door on each side of the tipper body, means for selectively opening and closing each side door, and an actuator for tipping said body about the selected pivot means.
Preferably the pivot means include means for locking the tipper body in position and selectively releasing said locking means on the pivot opposite to the side to which the load is to be discharged.
Preferably the side doors are hinged about their lower edge to the lower portion of the tipper body, and opened and closed by a hydraulic ram having one end hinged to a central point on the tipper bin such that in the closed position the hydraulic ram is generally parallel to the-chassis of the trailer.
3 Preferably the actuator is mounted centrally of the chassis and extends upwardly to a central point on the tipper body adjacent the central point to which the hydraulic rams are hinged.
In order to more fully describe the invention reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure 1 is a view of an end of the trailer in the transport position, Figure 2A to F show similar views of the trailer with right door opened, tipping s ee. 10 to the right, both doors open, left door open and tipping to the left, Ioo Figures 3 and and show one example of the locking hinge, and Figures 4(a) and show more detail of the locking hinge.
°oooo° The two way tipper trailer 1 has a chassis 2 supported by wheels 3. A tipper body 4 is mounted on the chassis 2 by hinges 5 and 6, one on each side of the S.i *chassis and tipper body. Releasable locking means are provided to lock the *hinge portion of the tipper body to the hinge portion on the chassis. A multistage actuator 7 is hinged on the longitudinal centre line of the chassis by o boss 8 and extends upwardly in the closed position of the tipper body to a bracket 9 on the tipper body at about the central height of the tipper body.
The tipper body has doors 10 and 11 one on each side of the tipper body, each door being hinged by its hinge pin 12 and 13 to the lower portion of the tipper body. To open and close the doors each door is provided with a door actuator 14 and As shown in Figure 2, to tip to the side as shown in B the actuator 14 opens the door 10. The locking means is released on hinge 6 and actuation of the multistage actuator 7 tips the tipper body about the hinge 5 to discharge the contents. Thereafter the multistage actuator lowers the tipper body whereby hinge 6 is again locked and the actuator 14 closes the door D shows both doors 10 and 11 open and E and F show the tipping to the other side.
Referring now to Figures 3 and 4 there are shown three hinge pins spaced along the each side of the vehicle and for convenience only one will be described. Each hinge pin 5 is attached to the edge of the tipper body 4 by brackets 20 supporting a guide tube 21, an actuator 22 moving the hinge pin through the guide tube from a locked position as shown in Figures 3(a) and 4(a) to an unlocked position shown in Figures 3(b) and 4(b).
A pair of locking brackets 23 are fixed to the tipper body, these being spaced 10 to permit a locking boss 24 on the chasses to enter between the brackets 23 when the tipper body is in the down position. The hinge pin in the locking position extends through holes 25 in the brackets to secure the tipper body in the locked down position. The locking boss has a circular hole (not shown) through which the hinge pin passes. However the hinge pin at its end 26 which enters hole 25 in bracket 23 furthest from the actuator has a pair of *opposite flat sides to prevent the hinge pin rotating when the tipper body is tipped to discharge its contents, the hole 25 being complimentary shaped to have a pair of opposite flat sides. The end 26 of the hinge pin is reduced in diameter to form a step limiting the outward movement of the hinge pin. The actuator can be of any form, either being hydraulic, pneumatic or manually actuated.
While the above has been described with the actuator and hinge pin mounted on the tipper body it is realised the actuator and hinge pin can be mounted on the chassis with the locking boss on the tipper body.
Thus it can be seen there is provided according to the invention a two way side tipper vehicle which efficiently discharges from either side of the vehicle by the provision of a single tipping actuator. The control from which side the contents are to be tipped is by unlocking of the hinge on the other side of the tipper body.
While the locking hinge has been described it is to be realised that the hinge on each side may be a circular member engaging in an open socket, and the locking of the tipper body may be locking means acting between the tipper body and the chassis to close the open socket.
Although one form of the invention has been described in some detail it is to be realised that the invention is not to be limited thereto, but can include variations and modifications falling within the spirit and scope of the invention.
