Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT A FISH CATCHING AID The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing the invention known to me.
(Provisional application No. P07586) FIELD OF INVENTION This invention relates to the general field of angling
OBJECT
It is the object of this invention to allow anglers to speedily and repeatedly attach bait to a fishing line to take advantage of a wave of fish on the bite.
PREFERRED EMBODIMENT i: For many anglers pursuing the sport of fishing either from the beach as in surf fishing or from a boat as in trawling, baiting the hook can be a time consuming activity especially just when the fish come on the "bite". As the fish often come in waves in such situations, there is little time to prepare the bait for successive throws of the fishing rod to make a good haul in a short time.
This new fish catching aid allows anglers to speedily prepare bait ready for throwing out to the fish on the end of a fishing line using various fishing aids such as swivels, hooks, fishing rods. It also aids in securing a catch once the bait is in the water.
The fish catching aid is manufactured out of any material and in such a way that it is easily pushed through the bait fish from the tail along the spine to emerge through the mouth of the bait fish. The aid is manufactured in different lengths in order to accommodate various bait fish. A short length aid is manufactured to be used on a small rod using for example but not exclusively, shrimps or prawn as bait, a medium length aid for use with hardihead bait and the longer length aid for yellow tail or garfish bait as examples.
By prior baiting of several fish catching aids the angler is able to take advantage of sudden "runs" of fish by quickly reeling in several fish on a single catch removing the catching aid together with the caught fish and replacing it with another catching aid, already baited and casting back into the water. Thus little time is lost and many fish can be caught in a single run.
The fish catching aid is shown in figure 1 and consists of a cylindrical rod of any material flattened at both ends. The rod is made of various lengths to accommodate different bait fish and of a diameter of 2.50mm or greater. At one end the rod is flattened to a thickness of 1.00mm. The material is made pointed at that end with a central hole of 2.00mm diameter. The other end of the cylindrical rod is also flattened to a thickness of 1.00mm but is made circular. It has a central hole of 2.00mm diameter.
3.
The pointed end of the fish catching aid is inserted into the tail end of the bait fish, pushed along the spine of the fish to emerge through the mouth. The rounded end has fish hooks of various types attached and the pointed end attaches through links and swivels to the fishing line on the fishing rod.
When an angler is surf fishing the aid is cast into the water then reeled in slowly. If the angler is fishing from a boat, the best method is to have the boat trawling at about 4 knots with the aid attached to the fishing rod line trailing behind the boat in the water. In both cases the fish catching aid causes the bait fish to appear to be swimming through the water because of the straightness of its spine and is therefore more likely to receive a bite from the predatory fish that are being caught. In fact several bites are likely when ganged hooks are used resulting in the catching of several fish in one cast.
Once the fish are caught they are quickly reeled in and a further baited aid is attached and the line thrown into the water again in short time. The speed at which the baited catching aid is attached to the fishing line is the main advantage over other fishing techniques.

Claims (3)

1. A fish catching aid is a rod that can be made from any material. One end of the rod is sharpened and flattened with a central 2mm hole, the other end is also flattened, made circular with a central 2mm hole through which passes a stainless steel split ring to which can be attached various fish hooks. The sharpened end is attached to a fishing line in the normal manner.
2. The shape of the fish catching aid as claimed in claim 1 allows anglers to Speedily fix bait fish prior to casting and therefore increase the speed of recasting after each catch
:3. The fish catching aid as claimed in claim 2 when trawled behind a boat or *go
