Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT Name of Applicant: Actual Inventor: Address for Service: Invention Title: WHITCO PTY LTD MICHAEL MORRIS STEPHEN HEMSLEY CULLEN CO., Patent Trade Mark Attorneys, 240 Queen Street, Brisbane, Qld. 4000, Australia.
A LOCK (CASE 2) e r a e e r Details of Associated Provisional Applications: Nos. PL9141 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us: THIS INVENTION relates to a lock and in particular relates to a lock for locking a sliding window to a support.
The lock will be described by way of example with reference to sliding windows but it should be appreciated that the lock may also be used for other sliding members such as doors or the like.
Sliding windows are commonly found in domestic dwellings and generally comprise a window surround frame, a fixed window and a sliding window which can slide from a closed position to an open position where it overlies the fixed window. The sliding window generally slides along a track or a channel formed in the window surround frame.
Sliding window locks may consist of a simple '*'.catch pivotally mounted to a sash of the sliding window.
The catch may have a leading nose portion adapted to engage a projection on the surround frame. Catches of this type provided a deterrent to external entry but were 20 of no benefit in preventing egress by an intruder.
Other catches of this general type included a locking cylinder and a locking member operable by the ""cylinder to prevent the catch from being pivoted.
S"Catches of this type not only deterred external entry but provided some deterrent preventing egress by an intruder.
Such catches were limited in their effectiveness by the integral strength of the rear flange of the sash to which the catch was pivotally mounted. Such locks relied upon engagement of a locking slide with the rear flange of the S 30 sash to inhibit pivotal movement of the lock. Typically the sash was made of aluminium. It was generally easy to jemmy such catches from the inside by employing a screwdriver or the like. When jemmied, the point of failure was not necessarily the catch but the sash failed due to deformation of the rear flange. Such catches could also not effectively be deadlocked.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a lock which at least minimises the disadvantages referred to above.
According to one aspect, the invention provides a lock for a sliding window, the window having a sash and being slidable relative to a window surround frame including a jamb, the lock including: a lock body pivotally mountable to the sash, a lock cylinder carried by the body, a locking member adapted to be slidably moved relative to the body by operation of the lock cylinder and having a hooked locking projection for movement into locking engagement with a lip on the jamb.
The lock preferably includes biasing means for returning the lock body to an initial position after the lock is pivoted relative to the sash. The biasing means may comprise a spring. Preferably a. leaf or bow spring *co nis employed located adjacent a rear face of the body and between the body and the sash.
The lock body preferably has a leading *projection adapted to ride over the lip on the window jamb. The leading projection may have a tapered leading edge to facilitate such action. When the leading 0 S projection rides over the lip the lock body is caused to pivot relative to the sash. Preferably a bead extends at least part way along the rear face of the lock body. The bead may comprise discrete bead portions.
The lock cylinder preferably has an operating pin engagable with the locking member. To this end, the locking member may have a recess for receiving the pin.
The recess may comprise a slot.
The locking member may comprise a locking slide movable between a latching position and a locking position. The slide has a hooked projectcA for engagement with a lip on the window jamb. Depending upon the shape of the lip, the hooked projection may either be directed forwardly or rearwardly of the lock body.
Preferably the projection is directed rearwardly.
The lock body may include a handle for facilitating pivoting of the lock body about the bead.
I The handle may extend rearwardly of the lock body. The body may include a flange which limits the degree to which the body may be pivoted by the spring. The flange may consist of a stop extending from the underside of the body directed towards the sash. Preferably the stop is located forwardly of the bead about which the lock body pivots relative to the sash.
A particular preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the drawings in which: Figure 1 is a view of a lock of an embodiment of the invention shown in its unlocked and unlatched position; Figure 2 is a view of the lock of Figure 1 shown in a position it assumes during closing or i' ~Figure 3 is a view of the lock of Figure 1 in its latched and unlocked position; and .Figure 4 is a view of the lock of Figure 1 in 20 its locked position.
As shown in Figure 1 the lock 10 has a lock body 11. The body has a rearwardly extending handle 12 and a bead 13 extending along a rear face 14. The bead extends at least part way along the rear face 14.
Although a continuous bead is preferred, discrete bead :.."portions may also be used. The bead 13 is received in a correspondingly shaped groove in window sash 15. A spring 16 extends from the rear face 14 and into abutment "with flange 17 of sash 15. This leaf spring 16 ensures 30 that when the body 11 is pivoted about bead 13 and towards flange 17, the body returns to the position shown in Figure i. A lock cylinder is received within the body 11 and is free for limited rotation within the body. The cylinder has locking wafers or discs 19 and a retaining wafer 20 which retains the cylinder relative to the body 11.
The forward part of the lock has a ramped latching projection 21 with ramped edge 22. A flange 23 is located forwardly of bead 13 and which limits the degree to which the spring 16 returns the body after pivoting action.
An operating pin 24 extends from the cylinder 18 and is received in a slot (not shown) in a slide The slide 25 has a hooked forward portion 26.
When it is desired to close a window of which sash 15 forms a part, the sash is moved towards window surround frame or jamb 27. Jamb 27 has a hooked projection or lip 28 with a forward ramped portion 29 and a rear portion 30. Latching projection 21 is caused to ride over lip 28 as shown in Figure 2. This action causes the lock body to pivot about bead 13 relative to sash 15 and against the action of spring 16. After the lip 28 is cleared, the latched position of Figure 3 is .reached.
In Figure 3 the projection 21 is located rearwardly of lip 28 and slide 25 is located in its leading position with hooked projection 26 adjacent 20 projection 21. When in this position and with sash moved closer to frame 27, the hooked projection 26 may still clear lip 28. Thus, the body may still be pivoted to unlatch the lock.
To achieve the Figure 4 position a key (not shown) is used to rotate the cylinder 18. The pin 24 causes the slide 25 to move rearwardly of the body 1l.
This causes the hooked projection 26 to move away from projection 21 and into locking engagement with the rear edge 30 of lip 28. The lock 10 is in its locked position 30 in Figure 4. To unlock the lock the key is used to rotate the cylinder 18 back to the position of Figure 3.
This moves the slide 25 forwardly of the lock body to disengage the hooked projection 26 from the rear edge of lip 28. This returns the lock to its latched position where the body 11 may be pivoted to allow the window to be opened.
The lock of the invention does not rely on the strength of flange 17 to achieve locking action. The I I 6 hooked engagement of slide 25 with the lip 28 provides a positive locking action not as prone to jemmying as known window locks.
