Class Application Number: Lodged: Complete Specification Lodged: Accepted: Published: Priority Related Art: ~B~sdB o r o r r r Name of Applicant: GEC Alsthom Transport SA Actual Inventor(s): Jean-Daniel Nast Address for Service: PHILLIPS ORMONDE FITZPATRICK Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys 367 Collins Street Melbourne 3000 AUSTRALIA Invention Title: EDDY CURRENT BRAKE SUPPORT DEVICE AND UNDERCARRIAGE FOR RAIL VEHICLE INCORPORATING THIS DEVICE Our Ref 384923 POF Code: 1501/202864 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to applicant(s):
I
EDDY CURRENT BRAKE SUPPORT DEVICE AND UNDERCARRIAGE FOR RAIL VEHICLE INCORPORATING THIS DEVICE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION e Field of the invention The present' invention concerns undercarriages for rail vehicles incorporating an Eddy current brake cooperating with a rail in which a drive device moves the braking body between a top rest position and a bottom active position and is in bearing engagement with the braking body through the intermediary of abutments, the drive device and these abutments being disposed on a longitudinal support of the chassis of the undercarriage.
Description of the prior art Patent EP-A-0 299 318 (DUEWAG) describes an undercarriage for rail vehicles which is within the field of the invention as previously defined.
A first teaching of this patent concerns a type of suspension, usually referred to as a "low articulation' stspension, in which there is a distance of only a few millimeters between the top of the rail and the braking body, which is secured to an undercarriage via coil springs. This small distance is t;avelled in response to triggering of the electrical current sent to the track brake and opposing the force of the coil springs with the result that the braking body presses on the rail. After release of the current the springs pull the braking body back to its rest position.
Another teaching of this patent concerns another type of track brake suspension known as a "high articulation" suspension, in which the distance between the top of the rail and the braking body is greater than the elastic travel of the coil springs. Drive devices are then used to lower and raise the braking body. These drive devices are connected to a longitudinal support of the chassis of the undercarriage which has no elastic -alll movement relative to the rail.
The undercarriage for rail vehicles which is the subject matter of the European patent mentioned above is characterized in that the braking body is fixedly locked in a horizontal plane, in its rest position, via a known abutment device and is suspended with vertical damping by disposing at least two elastic members between the abutment device and the longitudinal support.
This prior art patent also teaches the provision of a housing in the abutment of an undercarriage equipped with Eddy current brakes to limit the distance between the rail and the braking body when in an active position.
The present invention concerns an Eddy current brake support device and an undercarriage for rail vehicles incorporating this device.
Patent EP-A-0 299 318 (DUEWAG) describes an Eddy current braking body resting on a bogie chassis. The bogie chassis is mounted on axle boxes with no primary suspension. The Eddy current braking body is controllably moved and guided relative to the bogie chassis.
In the cited prior art the Eddy current braking body is also referenced to the bogie chassis.
A drawback of the Eddy current braking structure of the prior art is that the masses are fixed relative to the non-suspended mass of the axles.
Accordingly, an -object of -the ddy current bra support device of the invention is to make it sible to change reference between the braki ase and the non-braking phase with the f ity to suspend the braking mass in normal o ation.
Another o of the Eddy current brake support device he invention is to enable it to absorb all dermations t which it may be subjcted. TwS L_ I I SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In one asoect the invention provides an eddy current brake support device including first and second half-beams which cooperate with each other via articulation means in order to absorb all deformations of said brake support device, wherein said articulation means includes a composite material crossmember disposed between said first and second half-beams.
In another aspect the invention provides an eddy current brake support device to which is fixed at least one linear eddy current brake shoe defining an airgap relative to the rail with which said linear shoe is associated, said brake support device including: a first half-beam, and a second half-beam, cooperating with each other via articulation means in order to absorb all deformations of said brake support device, wherein said articulation means includes a composite material crossmember disposed between said first and second half-beams; mans for displacing said brake support device vertically, and means for guiding vertical displacement of said brake support device, 20 cooperating with each other to define a non-braking phase during which said brake support device is raised and a braking phase during which said brake support device is lowered; and at least one bearing arm fastened to one end of said half-beams, S: the end of each bearing arm cooperating with reference means associated 25 therewith fastened to one of the axle boxes in order to impose a predetermined value on said airgap when said brake support device is in said braking phase.
In a further aspect the invention provides a rail vehicle undsrcarriage including an eddy current brake support device including first and second halfbeams which cooperate with each other via articulation means in order to absorb all deformations of said brake support device, wherein said articulation means includes a composite material crossmember disposed between said first and second half-beams.
In accordance with other preferred features of the brake support device of the invention: the crossmember may be of generally parallelepiped shape and have a generally parallelepiped-shape opening at its center; the crossmember may be made from carbon or glassfiber reinforced epoxy resin; the articulation means may include at least one elastic ball joint disposed between said first and second half-beams; at least one of the half-beams may have a generally T-shape structure including a longitudinal yoke and a radial arm, the elastic ball joint being disposed at the end of thB radial arm.
One advantage of the Edd' current brake support device of the invention is that it makes the braking equipment assembly mobile and minimizes its mass.
oeeoI S 15 Other features and advantages of the invention emerge from a reading of the following description of two preferred embodiments of the brake support S"device given with reference to the drawings, Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side view of the prior art undercarriage 20 previously referred to and including an Eddy current braking body.
