With existing floor drains such as those in shower recesses or the like the position of the waste fitting is closely determined before waterproofing and tiling of the recess by the prior installation of the fixed drain pipes below the floor. Accordingly it is common for the drain to 'be off-centre in the recess floor or otherwise unsuitably located for placement of the tiles around it. This detracts from the appearance of the tile pattern adjacent the waste fitting and may also require excessive cutting of tiles.
e 0 It is therefore an object of this invention to ameliorate the aforementioned disadvantage and accordingly this invention discloses an adapter for a shower waste or the ike, said adapter comprising a sump means connectable .0 to a drain pipe fixed below the shower floor, the horizontal cross-section of the sump means when in a position of use being sufficient to collect water from said shower floor waste located immediately above at any one of a range of loacations in said shower floor whereby said waste fitting can be located at a desired location in the shower floor such as at the centre thereof despite deviations in the placement of said fixed drain pipe.
Preferably the waste fitting includes a laterally extending collar adjacent the upper rim thereof, said collar being sufficient to overlap the mouth of the sump means when the fitting is located at any of said range of locations.
Two currently preferred embodiments of this invention will now be described with reference to the attached drawings in which: Figure 1 shows an exploded view of one form of the adapter, Figure 2 shows a vertical cross-sectional view of the adapter fitted into the floor of a shower recess or the like, Figures 3 and 4 show plan and underside views of a second form of sump for the adapter, and .or Figure 5 shows a cross-sectional view along the lines A-A of a figure 4.
oa Referring first to figure 1 the adapter may comprise a sump or well receptacle 1 with a pipe connector piece 2 of any suitable 0*o oO*"o, design extending down from the base 3. The rim 4 of the sump defines a horizontal plane and in accordance with this invention encloses an area which is substantially larger than that of the connector piece 2 and drain pipe 5 to which it connects. Although with this embodiment 4 the sump is shown as being generally rectangular this is not essential to the invention and in practice any other suitable shape may. be used. The connector piere may also be of any suitable length and indeed may even comprise merely a connecting flange or the like for attaching the drain pipe 5 to the bottom of the sump.
-3- In use as shown in figurle 2 the sump is fitted so that the rim 4 is level with the floor support 6 of a shower recess or the like and the connector piece 2 joins with the fixed drain pipe 5 below. In accordance with normal practice a wacerproof membrane 7 is laid over the floor 6 and is lapped well over the rim 4 of the sump. Following this the waste fitting 8 is placed over the sump 1 and a bed of cement is spread over the components. As mentioned earlier the waste fitting 8 preferably has a laterally extending collar l0 adjacent its upper rim which completely overlies the mouth of the sump so that t:ogether viLh the cement bed 9 a continuous base is formed lor Liling. Al though the collar is shown as rectangular in the drawings other shapes such as circular may also be used within the cope of this invention.
As also shown in figure 2 this arrangement allows the 0: o centreline of the waste fitting 8 to be moved substantially °000 out of alignment with the connector piece and fixed drain pipe. Accordingly the location of this fitting may be easily adjusted in the wet cement bed by the tiler so as to sit at the centre of the recess or otherwise fit S into any desired tile pattern irrespective of the fixed position of the drain pipe.
A second embodiment of the sump is shown ir figures 3 to fh e manner of installation is s imilar to that shown in figure 2. Here however the sump 11 is circular in plan view and includes four additional side flanges 12 spaced S t-4ii d at 90 degrees to each other. These enable the sump to also receive drainage from a floor waste or washroom sink outside the shower enclosure. The sump is preferably moulded with these flanges initially closed off by wall segments 1i do Lhat t.hy can be cut out on site as required.
Upstanding lugs 14 are also provided around the rim of the sump. When the device is installed as shown in figure 2 these support the collar 10 of the waste fitting slightly above the surface of the plane of the rim and membrane 7 and thereby facilitate the drainage into the sump of any moisture accumulating under the cement bed 9. Preferably these lugs would be circular as shown and about 6 mm in height although the invention is not limited to any specific size or shape for them. Ridges 16 may also be formed inside the flanges 12 and waste stack 17 to facilitate a push fit connection over incoming o9 Sand outgoing drain pipes (not shown) after which a sealing °"o6 adhesive would be applied to the joint in accordance with o° conventional practice.
44o It will thus be appreciated that this invention at least in the form of the embodiments described provides a novel 0 04 and useful adapter fitting for shower or bathroom floor Sdrains or the like. Clearly however the examples disclosed are only the currently preferred forms of this invention and a wide variety of modifications may be made which would be apparent to a person skilled in the art. For example the shape and configuration of the sump as well as its means of zonnection to the drain pipes could all be varied according to design preference. The invention is also not limited to any particular material for constructing the adapter although a mouldable plastic complying with the relevant standards for plumbing fittings is preferred.
