COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT Invention Title:
CORNICE
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:-

SCORNICE
This invention relates to a cornice, that is, a building lining component primarily used in room spaces to complete the lining of a room at the intersection between walls and ceilings for decorative purposes as well as concealing the gap between the wall and ceiling forming panels at their intersections. The invention also relates to any situation where an intersection between two planar surfaces is to be concealed by a building component analogous to a cornice.
CORNICE
This invention relates to a cornice, that is, a building lining component primarily used in room spaces to complete the lining of a room at the intersection between walls and ceilings for decorative purposes as well as concealing the gap between the wall and ceiling forming panels at their intersections. The invention also relates to any situation where an intersection between two planar surfaces is to be concealed by a building component analogous to a cornice.
3 It has become the practice when renovating buildings, such as domestic dwellings, to update cornice components by replacing existing cornices with more decorative and/or aesthetically appealing cornices, and which to date has involved removing the existing cornices and replacing them with the new cornices. Such a procedure can be both time consuming, and therefore labour intensive, as well as, in relation to linings of plaster or like materials, messy due to the production of plaster dust and possible damage to existing wall and ceiling panels.
It is therefor an object of the present invention rto overcome this problem with existing renovation SDos "techniques by providing a cornice which dispenses with the need to remove existing cornices.
*0 so* The invention therefore envisages a renovating cornice for use in a building structure having an existing S" cornice, said renovating cornice having a front face and a i~r rear face having an elongate cavity therein shaped to be superimposed, in use, on said existing cornice such as to cover and conceal the existing cornice.
One preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which; Figure 1 is a schematic view of a room space lined and incorporating cornices in accordance with this preferred embodiment of the present invention at the intersection between the wall and ceiling lining panels of the room space, Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view through a wall and ceiling intersection for the room space of figure 1 showing an existing cornice and a renovating cornice in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention in the process of being positioned, and Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view similar to that of figure 2 with the renovating cornice in position.
Referring to figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown a room space in a building comprising of floor wall panels 11, and ceiling panels 12. The intersections between the lower edges of the wall panels 11 and the floor 10 are 4 covered by architraves or kick boards 13, whilst the intersections between the top edges of the wall panels 11 and the side edges of the ceiling panels 12 are covered by cornices 14, in this case existing cornices which a home renovator may wish to update with more decorative and/or aesthetically appealing cornices. As shown in figures 2 and 3 the existing cornices 14 consist of elongate building components of arcuate cross-section attached in position to conceal the intersection between the wall and ceiling panels 21 and 12.
In accordance with this preferred embodiment of the invention, an elongate renovating cornice 15 is Q o provided, also being of arcuate cross-section with a decorative pattern or configuration on its outer surface 16 S.(alternatively the outer surface may be plain) facing Sinwardly of the room space, whilst its rear surface 17 is
B
*oB. undercut and configured to provide a cavity 18 of arcurate cross-section to receive, in mating relationship, the shape of the existing cornice 14. The cavity 18 in the rear surface of the renovating cornice 15 maybe dimensioned to provide a clearance of in the order of be .een 0 and for example 1mm, between its surfaces and :hose of the existing cornice 14 to allow for distortions in the existing cornice and adjustment so that its edges closely abut the adjacent wall and ceiling surfaces.
During installation of the renovating cornice a suitable adhesive material, such as plaster in the case of plaster components, is applied to the abutting surfaces S of the existing and renovating cornices 14 and 15, with additional fastening means, such as nails and screws, if required inserted through the combination of cornices 14 and 15 and also possibly the adjacent building framework.
Conventional finishing techniques are then used to fill any existing gaps between the renovating cornice 15 and the wall and ceiling panels 11 and 12.
