i Name of Applicant: TANJANT TOOL CO. PTY. LTD.
Address of Applicant: Factory /164 Grange Road, Fairfield, Victoria, 3078, Victoria.
Actual Inventor(s); Address for Service: DAVIES COLLISON, Patent Attorneys, 1 Little Collins Street, Melbourne, 3000.
Complete specification for the invention entitled: "GUIDE DEVICES FOR CUTTIttG TORCHES" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best metnod of performing it known to us 1 -2- "GUIDE DEVICES FOR CUTTING TORCHES" 0000 t o *o 0* #0tI o *0 0 0 *0 0 o 0 00 00 00 0 0 000 0*0 0 00*0 The present invention relates to guide devices for gas cutting torches.
A requirement exists for a simple foirm of guide device for a gas cutting torch to facilitate cutting metal sheet.
According to the present invention, there is provided a guide device for a hand-held gas cutting torch, said guide device comprising a body having a 15 generally circular apoerture for releasably receiving a head of the torch such that the head can extend through the aperture and be' supported by the body and a pair of opposed wheols at opposite sides of the body, for supporting the body from a substrate to be cut, the 20 wheels being so located relative to the aper-K 'ure in the body that a line connecting the centres of the two wheels is displaced from the axis of the wheel aperture in use of the device the torch head can be oriented within the aperture such that the axis of each wheel is located rearwardly of a cutting stream emitted by the torch head.
Further according to the invention there is provided A cutting torch assembly comprising a hand-held gas c-utting torch having a head, and a guide device for supporting the head of the torch above a substrate to be cut, said guide device comprising a body of sleeve-like form having an aperture therethrough, said aperture releasably receiving the head such that the head is su~pported by the body and faces towards the substrate, and wheels depending from the body at opposed sides of the body to support the. body f or movement on the 14V 0 k 910701,rshspe.008,de-vicsspo,2 -3substrate, the axis of each wheel being rearwardly of the axis of the aperture such that a cutting stream emitted by the torch head will be forwardly of the axis of each ,w heel.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an exploded view of a guide device in accordance with the invention; Figures 2(a) and 2(b) are side views showing the guide device in use with a torch head operating on a mixture of oxygen and gas; and 4 ,Figures 3(a) and 3(b) are side views showing the guide device in use with a head of a plasma torch.
As shown in the drawings a guide device compris 0 a body 2 having a central cylindrical mounting portion 4, adapted to receive the head 6 of a cutting torch, the head 6 being secured within the mounting portion 4 by means of a knurled screw 8.
The mounting portion 4 may receive insert sleeves 9 (Figures 2a and 2b) of different internal size to enable different heads to be fitted within the mounting portion 4. Blocks 10 formed at opposite sides of the mounting portion 4 each include a NI 91o626 4 rsbspc,008,devIces.sP.3 -4vertically extending passage 12 which receives a support rod 14 carrying a wheel 16 at its lower end.
The support rods 14 are secured within the passages 12 by screws 18, whereby the height of the body 2 above the wheels 16, and thus the cutting height of the torch head 6, can be adjusted.
In use, the torch head 6, supported by the guide device, is moved manually by the operator over the surface of the metal plate to be cut, the head 6 being held at a constant height relative to the plate by means of the guide device as the wheels 16 of the guide device roll along the surface of the plate, i Xt will be seen from Figure 1 that the passages 12 are displaced rearwardly of the axis of the mounting portion 4 whereby the axis of the two wheels 16 is displaced rearwardly of the axis of the mounting portion 4. This configuration permits the torch head 6 to lie forwardly of the axis of the wheels by a limited distance which facilitates starting of the cutting operation at the edge of the plate, as will now be described.
Figures 2(a) and show the guide device in use with a torch head 6 operating with a mixture of oxygen and fuel gas. The forwards displacement of the head 6 relative to the axis of the wheels 16 permits the wheels to engage the plate at its edge portion with the head 6 being located so that the cutting stream 20 is just clear of the edge. This enables correct establishment of the cutting stream and also pre-heating of the edge portion of the plate prior to the stream engaging the plate edge at the S commencement of cutting, and thereby provides a smoother cut at the edge portion.
Figures 3(a) and 3(b) show the guide device in use with the head 6 of a plasma torch. Again, the forwards displacement of the head 6 relative to the axis of the wheels 16 permits proper establishment of the plasma stream 22 outside of the plate edge, whilst the wheels 16 are supported at the edge portion of the plate. This likewise results in a smoother cut at the edge portion.
SThe embodiment has been described by way of example only and modifications are possible within the scope of the invention.
