SPECIFICATIONS
This invention relates to a d~evice for holding a door open in any specific position, including the fully open position.
It is common for door stop devices to be either cumbersome or extremely limited in their function.
Some devices do stop the door in any open position, but when niot engaged, they do not prevent the door handle from hitting the wall and they do not automatically hold the door in its fully-open position.
F'urther, either they only work on self-closing doors or they do not work well on all floor surfaces or they require holes to be drilled into the floor.
Other devices just secure the door in the fully-open pooition only, sometimes rather abruptly or noisily, but they do not allow the door to be stopped at any partially-open position. Come require a par-,on to bend over and manually engage the device by hand.
Moo, rockri or hunVY WL1,LchtL; will hold the door fully open ,ij wol I1, htit tbey oiro cumber some and unsightly.
fltill othier duvicen simply prevent the door handle from hiLtd.n([ the wall,, Wilea these are the most common door stop daviceu, they do niot hold the door in its fully-open position, 'they are not able to stop the dloor at- any partially-open position, and some of them are abrupt and noisy in their function. The.refore, all1 existing devices are restricted in function, inconvenient to use, or suffer other shortcomings.
Wayne J. Kondruk THE COMMISSIONER OF PATENTS.
(IMPOlTANT Crots out i,,nppllc ltlu words In tti above Form.) Thu object of thil invention is to provide a simple door stop, uffiolont and unrestricted in use, which doue thireo main thintuj fiirstly, it softly prevents a door's handlu U 'om hitting the wall; secondly, it automatically holds the door open when it is pushed to its fully-open position; and thirdly, it allows the door to be stopped at any partially-open position.
Furthermore, it is not cumbersome, it is quiet, it requires no holes in the floor, it can be operated with the foot (without bending over), it works well on all floor surfaces (including wood, carpet, linoleum, brick, tile, and concrete), and it works on free-swinqing S 40 doors as well as on self-closing doors.
Operation of the invention is simple. The vertical shaft can be slid down the door-mounted bracket until the shaft's high-friction tip contacts the floor.
Thus, the door can be stopped at any partially-open position. Working against friction with the door bracket, this shaft can be slid back up in order to allow the door to swing freely. However, when the door is swung fully open, a horizontal protrusion of the shaft will engage the wall-mounted component and, by virtue of the soft self-clamping interface, Will hold the door in its fully-open position.
In the drawings which illustrate embodiments of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the door stop; including the door-mounted bracket, the sliding shaft, and the wall-mounted component, eath shown separately.
Figure 2 is a top view of this mitbodiment showing the door component, mounted, and the wall component, mounted.
Figure 3 is a side view of this embodiment.
The example embodiment illustrated in the drawings hows the bracket 2 affixed to the door A. It shows the sliding shaft 1 partially embraced by the doormounted bracket 2. 'his configuration could as easily be reversed, io. the door-mounted bracket could instead be partially embraced by the shaft. On the bottom of the sliding shaft is a high-friction tip 3, eg.
possibly made of no-i-skid rubber. Thus, the shaft can be slid down t'e bracket until the tip comes in contact with the floor B, thus preventing the door from swinging. If. the uhaft is slid back up, then the door A swings Pruoly.
'The horizoiLt, I lijnor.lon 4 protrudes far enough to prevent the hlindlu of the door A from hittin? the wall C, iu. it protrudes approximately three inches, although this distance could be less if the wall-mounted component were extended farther from the wall.
3 Although the wall-mounted component 5 is shown as a female receptacle for the male protrusion 4, this $0 conf iguration could as easily be reversed, ie. the male protrusion could( he on the wall and female receptacle could bo on the Hfnfl,if'i horizontal portion. Also, the specific mabi-fuiualo configuration could be different, eq. inst cad of bul n' stquare as shown, it could be cylindricall mo in'j nii tho union is soft and temporarily? binding, Tfhe example etnbodimunL of the wall-mounted cumpurv ent 5 shown a rigid U-shaped channel 6 with a compressi)Io intprior 7, eg. foam rubber. This compressiblu, intorior haa a slit in it, to accept and bind the horizonLauI protrusion 4. The purpose of this wall component is to softly terminate the penetrating motion of tho protrusion, and to capture it by virtue of the binding friction between tho protrusion and thu compressiblo material.
The embodiment of the invention is intended primarily for free-swinging interior doors, but with appropriately strong construction it is also applicable to self-closing doors and to exterior doors.
100 In addition, the invention is applicable to any swinging door-like mechanism which has a suitably adjacent floor-like surface.
