Actual Inventor: Address for Service: David Lumby Spruson Ferguson, Patent Attorneys, Level 33 St Martins Tower, 31 Market Street, Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia Complete Specification for the invention entitled: REPRINT OF RECEIPT SCC07323 09/05/S9A Knob For A Cylindrical Lock The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us 5815/2 MAIL O ATTACHED MAIl OFFICCft/. j 5805/2 -2- The present invention relates to cylinder locks and more particularly to the knobs thereof, Cylinder locks are vulnerable since they can be easily gripped, for example by a pipe wrench, and a torque applied to the knob resulting in failure of the lock. This problem is exacerbated in hotels and motels where a large number of these locks are often employed.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantage.
There is disclosed herein a knob assembly for a lock having a spindle which receives a key barrel, said assembly including: a sleeve to fit over said spindle, a knob support mounted on said -paidje\and supported thereby but rotatable about said spindle, a knob mounted on said support, and wherein said assembly is adapted to accommodate location of the barrel in said spindle.
o A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by .o way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a schematic sectioned side elevation of a knob assembly for a cylindrical lock; and t l .Figure 2 is a schematic parts exploded view of the knob assembly of Figure 1.
In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a knob assembly 10 for a cylindrical lock. The knob assembly 10 is adapted to be mounted on the spindle 11 of the lock. The spindle 11 receives at its outer end 12 a key barrel from which there extends a key operated shaft which actuates the lock.
The key barrel is of a generally cylindrical configuration, however projecting upwardly from the barrel is a pin housing which projects upward through a longitudinal slot in the spindle 11.
The knob assembly 10 includes a sleeve 13 which is of a generally cylindrical configuration and has a longitudinal slot 14. The sleeve 13 fits over the spindle 11 with the slot 14 arranged so that the pin housing projects upward through the spindle 11 and enters the slot 14. The outer end of the sleeve 13 is provided with a plurality of projections C-1 LN:7 rvJy IIJI lll1l I L.II III TO: THE COMMISSIONER OF PATENTS SD/306M -3- Supported on the sleeve 13 is a knob support 16 which is retained in position by means of a washer 1 and the projections 15. More particularly the projections 15 pass through slots I7 of a washer 18 also mounted on the sleeve 13. The projections 15 after passing through the slots 18, pass through a central opening 19 of the knob support 16. The projections are turned radially outward so as to provide end abutments 20 so as to "sandwich" the flange 21 of the knob support 16 between the abutments and the washer 17. During assembly, the projections 15 are inserted through the slots 18 and then are plastically deformed to retain the flange 21 in position.
Located on and secured to the knob support 16 is a knob 22 which has a forward central opening 23 through which the key barrel passes to enter the spindle, and sleeve 13. The rearward central opening 25 has a diameter n substantially larger than the sleeve 13. A rear flange member 26 is provided on said sleeve to generally close the opening r The support has an outer surface defining a generally spherical segment which coopergtes with the generally spherical shape of the knob 22, whereby the knob 22 is retained on the support 16.
In the above described assembly 10, the knob support 16, although being retained in a position supported on the sleeve 13, is rotatable about the longitudinal axis 24 of the spindle 11 relative thereto. Accordingly, the knob 22 is freely rotatable and accordingly any torque applied thereto cannot be transmitted to the spindle 11 via the sleeve 13. When the lock t is to be operated, the user merely turns the key and pulls or pushes the door by means of gripping the knob 22.
