qt Actual Inventor(s) -Gee-l-ong--2-2-O, Gemhe1thfAuta-a V'i )kddress for Service: DAVIES COLLISON, Patent Attorneys, 1 Little Collins Street, Melbourne, Complete specification for the invention entitled: "IHINGE ASSEMBLY"I2 The following statement is a full, description of this invention, including the best method of performin4 it known to us
I
rf -2- "HINGE ASSEMBLY" 4 4r 1 4( 4 r* 4044 4 44 4 C 4 I-4 i This invention relates generally to a hinge assembly which is suitable for use with doors. The term "door" as used in the specification and claims includes all forms of hinged closures including doors.
It is an object of the present invention to prov'Je an improved hinge assembly which is relatively simple in construction.
According to the present invention there is provided a door hinge assembly comprising a pin having a longitudinal pin axis, first and second hinge leaves each being operatively connected to said pin for rotational or pivotal 20 movement relative to one another with respect to the pin axis, biasing means for acting on one or both of the hinge leaves so as to cause them to be urged towards a first position relative to one another, said biasing means comprises a spring mounted around said pin and operatively connected to the hinge leaves so as to act thereupon, and holding means for releasably holding the hinge leaves in one or more selected positions relative to one another displaced from said first position against the action of said spring, said holding means comprising a catch member operatively connected to one of the hinge leaves and a stop unit operatively connected to the other of the hinge leaves and comprising a plurality of stops arranged at selected angular positions with respect to the pin axis said catch member being arranged to selectively engage one of the stops when the leaves are rotated or pivoted relative to one another beyond a preselected position from said first position against the action of said A4,' C C- Oib lSARSSP3.O47,73187conj spring.
The hinge leaves may each include a mounting section and a pin support section which operatively secures or connects each respective hinge I leaf to the pin.
The catch member may comprise a rod or bar carried on a support, the rod or bar being mounted for rotation relative to the support. The stop unit may comprise a plurality of recesses therein a wall of each recess defining one of the stops the recesses being disposed at selected angles around the axis of the pin.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will hereinafter be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: 9 9I Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hinge assembly according to the invention; and Figures 2 and 3 are schematic views showing how the hinge assembly ,J 15 operates.
Referring to the drawings, the hinge assembly generally indicated at 1 comprises first and second hinge leaves 2 and 3 operatively connected to~ a pin 12 for rotational movement relative to one anothcr vwith respect to the pin axis.
p.4:..As shown, the two hinge leaves 2 and 3 each include a mounting section 6 and 7 which is in the 04 a 1 9010iS,ARSSPE.047,73187-con,2 -4form of a flat plate and pin support sections 9 and which operatively secure or connect the hinge leaf to the pin 12. The pin support sections are in the form of projections of substantially circular cross-section extending to one side of the flat mounting plate. Suitable bushings may be disposed within the projections to provide bearing surfaces for the pin. End caps 13 are provided at each end of the pin and bearing rings 14 are provided for enabling free rotational movement. Preferably, the hinge leaves are adapted to be positioned relative to one t another the pin being arranged to pass through the respective pin support sections so that the leaves r rer Scan turn about the pin axis. The pin support sections of one of the leaves are preferably offset with respect to the pin support sections of the other of the leaves so that they can be aligned.
Biasing means is provided to urge the leaves towards a first position and as shown the biasing means is in the form of a spring 16 which is arranged to act on at least one of the hinge leaves to cause it to be urged into the first position referred to above. Conveniently as shown the spring 16 is mounted around the pin 12 and operatively connected to the hinge leaves to cause the biasing action. The hinge can be made of any suitable material and is preferably i formed from spring steel.
Holding means is associated with the hinge leaves Hand is adapted to retain the two hinge leaves in a relative disposition to one another in one or more selected positions against the action of the biasing means.
mn eoq)$~ In one form, as shown, the holdingK comprises a catch member 20 operatively connected to one of E_ Vi- the hinge leaves which is arranged to engage one or more stop members 24 which are preferably mounted on the other hinge leaf. The catch member as shown is in the form of a hexagonal rod or bar 22 carried on a support arm 21. The rod or bar 22 is mounted for rotation relative to the support and may comprise a plurality of flat sides.
The stop members 24 are formed by a unit having a plurality of recesses 25 formed therein, the recesses being disposed at selected angles around the axis of the pin.
In operation, for example, when the hinge assembly is used for supporting a door as shown in figures 2 and ,3 one of the hinge leaves is connected to the door S 15 with the other hinge leaf being connected to the door S"rt frame 41. The biasing means is preferably arranged to urge the door into a closed position. When the door is swung open, it will be automatically closed under the action of the spring unless the door is open 20 past a pre-selected angle when the stop means can :4t: ,take effect. The door may be held at a selected angle of opening by the location of the catch against one of the stop members as described above.
