-2 NOV 1988 PATENT OFF1I document contains the dmnents mace under On 49 LP(; ;S UOr'C~t for- 11 1 Description Microwave oven with a rotary plate This invention relates to microwave ovens.
In microwave ovens it is necessary to provide the greatest possible uniformity in the distribution of the microwave energy in the cooking space. This can be achieved with the use of a wave paddle, also known as a wobbler, which is rotatably mounted in the upper region of the cooking space behind a lining in the vicinity of the coupling-in site, or else by means of a rotary plate which is flush-mounted in the floor of the cooking space so that the articles to be cooked can be rotated during the cooking operation. The equipment which is already known in actual practice generally includes only one of the aforementioned auxiliary items for the uniform .too 0 distribution of the energy.
In contrast to this, it is known from DE-B-26 38 137 that equipment can be provided with a wave paddle and a rotary plate, in which said wave paddle and rotary plate at the same time are to provide a uniform distribution of the microwaves in the cooking space. Here the rotary plate is mounted in a recess in the floor of the cooking space with its upper surface disposed below the floor level of the cooking space or on a flat surface higher than said floor level of the cooking space in the oven.
The embodiments which are known from the present state of the art have the disadvantage that, with the use of a rotary plate, it is only possible to utilize carriers, which are of specific limited dimensions, for the articles being cooked. Furthermore, it is frequently not possible to have a plurality of smaller food -2containers, which project beyond the periphery of the rotary plate, alongside each other in the cooking space because the total area available is limited by the dimensions of the rotary plate, and the rotation of the rotary plate is inhibited by the containers, for articles being cooked, projecting beyond its periphery.
According to the present invention there is provided a microwave oven with equipment for coupling-in of the microwave energy in the cooking space, with a wave paddle for distributing the microwaves and a rotary plate which serves to carry the articles which need to be rotated o during the cooking operation, characterised in that the upper surface of the rotary plate is flush with the surface of the floor in the cooking space, thus forming a completely level surface, and that the rotary plate and the wave paddle may be separately switche8 on and off such that the rotary plate and the wave paddle are in operation alternatively to, intermittently or simultaneously with each other.
The position sensors may be installed in the cooking space so that it is not possible to switch on the rotary plate drive motor when larger food containers which project out beyond the periphery of the rotary plate are present on the floor of the cooking space.
S Substantial advantages are derived from the embodiment in accordance with the present invention for every-day operation of a microwave oven. With simultaneous activation of the wave paddle and the rotary plate it is possible to achieve optimal distribution of microwave energy in the cooking space.
2A In addition to this, there is no restriction on the size of the articles of food or of the food containers which can be placed in the oven, because it is possible to switch off the rotation of the plate, the upper surface of which is flush with the floor of the cooking space, thus making the total floor area available in the cooking space. Because the rotary plate is designed to be operated alternatively to, intermittently or simultaneously with, the wave paddle, several useful operational modes may be selected as desired.
Because of the arrangement in the cooking space of position-sensors for the articles of food or for the food containers, provision can be made so that the switching-on of the rotary plate drive is prevented if this is necessitated by the presence of articles of food See: or of food containers which project out beyond the periphery of the rotary plate.
In order that the invention may be more fully described, an embodiment of the invention will be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a cross-section through a microg I 0g ul I V
I
3 wave oven in simplified form when viewed from the side.
The microwave oven comprises a cooking space in the upper region of which, in a known manner, there is a wave paddle (3) and in the floor there is a rotary plate The rotary plate is driven by a motor by way of a drive belt The drive motor for the rotary plate and the drive for the wave paddle are controllable by a program switch The rotary plate is mounted in a stamped recess in the floor of the oven. The upper surface of the rotary plate is flush with the surface of the floor This avoids the presence of any protruding edges or steps in the level of the floor in the cooking space which could interfere with the sliding-in or -out of containers for the food to be cooked.
Depending upon the particular requirements, it is possible to pre-select the operational mode of the microwave oven by means !i of the program switch This makes it possible to switch on the wave paddle and the rotary plate separately or i simultaneously. In addition, it could also be advantageous, during the cooking operation with the wave paddle switched on, to operate the rotary plate intermittently.
If it is desired to utilize the total floor area of the cooking space then the rotary plate is switched off so that the articles of food or the food containers can be spread out over the entire surface area of the floor of the cooking space, or they can be slid in and out as required.
So that it is not possible to switch on the rotary plate drive motor when the rotation of said plate would be hindered by the presence of larger food containers which project out beyond the periphery of the rotary plate position sensors can be installed in the cooking space, preferably in the area of the floor around the rotary plate These sensors provide _Vnpulses to the control system which serve to block the ,Z/switching-on of the rotary plate drive motor 1 3A The embodiment has been advanced by way of example only.
It is accordingly to be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the details of the illustrated construction and that many modifications and variations will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention which extends to every novel feature and combination of features herein disclosed.
