Application Number: Lodged: Priority., Related Art: Name and Address PJ 1359 8 November 1988 Accepted: Published: of Applicant: Precision Roofing Accessories Co. Pty. Ltd 110 Bowden Street Meadowbank New South Wales 2114 AUS TRA LI A Actual Inventor: Graham Long Address for Service: Spruson Ferguson, Patent Attorneys, Level 33 St Martins Tower, 31 Market Street, Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia Complete Specification for the invention entitled: A Polycarbonate Sheet Mounting Arrangement The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us 5815/4 13 0 2 G 1:? I- A- A POLYCARBONATE SHEET MOUNTING ARRANGEMENT The present invention relates to a mounting arrangement for fitting polycarbonate sheeting to a support frame.
Polycarbonate sheeting is a comparitively new product and comprises first and second outer skins which are spaced, and a plurality of transverse and generally parallel walls extending longitudinally of the sheet and between the outer skins. The polycarbonate sheeting construction is s-ightly- transversely compressible and generally inflexible out of the -phe-/thereof.
Conventional methods of glazing aluminium framed windows, doors etc., necessarily cushion the glass at its edges so as to avoid cracking, S chipping or otherwise damaging the edge thereof, and to provide an adequate seal between the frame and the glass. Similar techniques are used for S other transparent sheet materials such as perspex.
tr rr r C Such methods usually comprise sandwiching both sides of the sheet material proximate its edge with a compressible material such as rubber, whereupon insertion of the sheet material into the frame member compresses the rubber so as to effect a seal therebetween.
A frame to support a sheet material such as glass usually comprises frame members extending around the perimeter of the sheet material. The frame members have a cavity to receive the rubber seal which, when held in the cavity supports the sheet material in the frame. However, in order for the sheet material to be replaced for example, after breakage of the glass, without having to dismantle the frame, the major dimensions of the S sheet material are necessarily smaller than the internal dimensions of the frame. Such arrangements generally rely on the rubber seal to support the sheet material In the frame.
However, polycarbonate sheeting is generally not breakable and replacement may only be necessary after a long period of use and as such it is not be necessary for a replacement sheet to be received in the assembled frame buf rather by disassembling the frame and removing the sheet and then Sreassembling the frame with a new sheet.
iFurther, previous transparent sheet materials such as glass are generally incompressible. Metal are also very hard and as such frames whereby the seal material alone must provide cushioning and also to effect a seal there between.

-2 It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the problems and/or disadvantages of the prior art.
In one broad form the present invention provides combination of polycarbonate sheet and frame meber wherein the polycarbonate sheet material transversely resiliently compressible and the frame member comprises first and second elongate flange portions being generally coextensive, parallel and spaced apart predetermined distance, and a web portion extending transversely between said flange portions to define at least one recess therewith; the combination further comprising a strip of resiliently compressible material having a predetermined thickness adhered to one side S edge portion of said sheet material; and the combination of said sheet material and said strip is positioned in said recess of said frame member, wherein so that said sheet S material and said compressible material are resiliently compressed into sealing contact with said flange portions.
A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: 41CC Figure 1 is a schematic sectional side elevation view of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a schematic exploded perspective view of the present .1 invention.
There is depicted in the drawings a polycarbonate sheet 10 comprising outer skins 11 which are spaced apart and a plurality of longitudinal CC CC S transverse walls 12 which are generally parallel and extend longitudinally C, of the sheet, and between the outer skins 11. The transverse walls 12 comprise a generally planar first portion 13 and a generally planar second portion 14, whereln the plane of said first portion 13 extends transversely to that of said second portion 14 and as such the sheet 10 is generally transversely, resiliently compressible.
Adhered to an edge portion 15 of the sheet 10 is a polyethylene tape 16 having a predetermined width and thickness.
The combination of the sheet 10 and the tape 16 is intended to be received in a recess 17 in the frame member 18.
The frame member 18 has a generally H-shaped cross-section so as to define two recesses 19 each adapted to receive respective edge portions of two separate sheets KLN/1393b l' yunrrrm ~rc- lri r; r -i m *I~ -3- The frame member 18 comprises, in cross-section, a first flange portion 21 and a second flange portion 22 which are generally coextensive and parallel and spaced a predetermined distance and a web portion 23 extending between said flange portions 21, 22.
The flange portions 21, 22 are spaced apart a distance which is slightly greater than the thickness of said sheet material 10, but is less than the thickness of said sheet mraterial 10 with the polyethylene tape 16 adhered thereto.
The depth of each recess portion, that is, the distance from the edge of the flange portion to the web portion is preferably at least twice the F'c thickness of the polycarbonate sheet to allow for accurate and good surface contact between alignment and good surface contact bt n the mating surfaces.
When the edge portion 15 is positioned in the recess 19 of the frame ii member 18, the sheet material 10 and the tape 16 are compressed and are resiliently biased into sealing contact with the flange portions 21, 22.
That is, the tape 16 is resiliently compressed and bears on the internal surface 21a of the first flange portion 21, and the sheet material 10 abuts and bears on the Internal surface 22a of the second flange portion 22.
C
e ll The system can be used, for example, on awnings wherein lengths of the polycarbonate sheet material 10 are mounted so as to form a roof above an external patio. The sheet material 10 can be straight or formed into a desired arcuate configuration. The lengths of the sheet material 10 can be joined by providing frame members 18 extending the length of the sheet t material 10 and being formed so as to be consistent with the curvature of ee the sheet material 10, wherein respective edge portions 15, with tape 16 adhered thereto, are Inserted Into each recess 17 so as to form a continuous roof surface.
