t c I c r Name of Applicant: Address of Applicant: Actual Inventor: EFCO MANUFACTURING PTY. LIMITED 108 Princess Highway, Arncliffe, New South Wales, 2205 Hagop Marashlian Address for Service: SHELSTON WATERS, 55 Clarence Street, Sydney Complete Specification for the Invention entitled: "MULTIPOSITION SWITCHLOCK" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- Complete of PI2719 dated 26.6.87 1 This invention relates to multiposition switchlocks.
Multiposition switchlocks are used in applications where an electric circuit having several operating modes is required to be restrictively switched between those modes. Such applications include lifts which may for example have automatic, manual and maintenance modes.
Switching of the lift between these modes of operation can be restricted by providing a multiposition switchlock operating a suitable multiposition electrical switch.
It is an object of this invention to provide a multiposition switchlock having a comparatively simple and reliable mechanism.
t SAccordingly this invention consists in a I /multiposition switchlock comprising a hollow cylindrical body having a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves of substantially semi-circular cross section spaced around its inner surface; at least one cylindrical C" locking roller peripherally disposed on a rotor mounted
S
c for rotation within said body; and means selectively S 20 operable by a key cylinder to engage said locking roller with a corresponding groove at one of a plurality of selected rotational positions of said rotor to lock said Irotor with respect to the body, and operable to permit disengagement of said locking roller and free rotation of said rotor by the key cylinder.
An adaptor rotatably mounted at one end of the rotor preferably comprises means selectively operable by a key cylinder. In this arrangement the key cylinder fits into and protrudes through the rotor.

Cables: 'Valid' Sydney Telex: 24422 The adaptor preferably includes a protuberance to urge the locking roller into engagement with the grooves and an adjacently disposed recess to receive at least part of the locking roller to provide for disengagement.
Preferably rotation of the adaptor by means of the key cylinder aligns the recess with the locking roller and urges the roller out of the groove and into abutment with the rotor to rotate the rotor with the adaptor.
It is further preferred that the adaptor has a recess on either side of the protuburance so that the adaptor and rotor assembly can be rotated either clockwise or anti clockwise.
In a preferred embodiment the swichlock is provided with two diametrically opposed locking rollers.
The multipositiun switchlock of this invention accordingly provides a simple reliable mechanism suitable for use in many applications.
S"c One embodiment of this invention will now be t described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a switchlock according to an embodiment of this invention; Figure 2 is an enlarged end view of the switchlock of Figure 1 partly assembled and in a locked position; and Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 when the switchlock is in an unlocked position.
Referring to Figures i, 2 and 3 the switchlock comprises a hollow cylindrical body 11 which has four 3

longitudinally extending grooves 12 of semi-circular cross section equally spaced around the inner surface.
A key cylinder 13 of known type is mounted in a stepped down end 14 of body 11. The key cylinder 13 has a driving end 15 which protrudes part way through a rotor 16 mounted for rotation within the larger part of body 11.
Rotor 16 has a castellated appearance and two diametrically opposed slots 17 receive locking rollers 18. An adaptor 19 fits within the end of rotor 16 to retain rollers 18 within the slots 17. The adaptor 19 also engages with driving end 15 of key cylinder 13 for cojoined rotation therewith.
Each side of adaptor 19 has a pair of recesses 20 of ao r Ssemi-circular cross section spaced by a protuberance 21.
Four springs 22 act between the adaptor 19 and rotor to 9, bias the adaptor 19 toward a position in which each protuberance 21 bears against respective roller 18. This *ooo .position is only achieved when grooves 12 are aligned with *0o4 rollers 18 so that protuberances 21 urge the rollers 18 20 into grooves 12 and the switchlock 10 assumes the locked condition shown in Figure 2. In this locked condition 4 rollers 18 prevent rotation of rotor 16 with respect to body 11. A washer 23 and circlip 24 shown in Figure 1 are used to retain the mechanism in body 11.
To move the switchlock from the locked condition key is inserted into key cylinder 13 and used to rotate adaptor 19 either clockwise or anticlockwise. As the adaptor 19 rotates rollers 18 are aligned with recesses and are urged out of engagement with grooves 12 and into abutment with slots 17 to rotate the rotor 16 with adaptor 19. The rotor 16 thus turns freely until rollers 18 align with the next pair of grooves 12. The key 25 can be withdrawn to leave the switchlock locked at this next locked position or rotation can be continued. It will be apparent that the illustrated switchlock has four locked 'r0 1 positions.
The provision of recess 20 on either side of protuberance 21 allows the rotor to be rotated from any locked position in a clockwise or an anticlockwise direction.
I t 20 In use a coupling (not shown) is provided between Irotor 16 and any suitable multiposition electrical switch (not shown) to provide the appropriate electrical connections for the selected application. The switchlock is panel mounted in a manner which restricts access to the rear of the switchlock and the electrical switch.
The foregoing describes only one embodiment of this invention and modifications may be made thereto without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, 5 suitable appropriately spaced grooves can be provided in the body to alter the number of locked positions of the switchlock.
