FIG. 4
[0001] The present invention relates to a lock conversion fitting kit and the fitting
method thereof.
[0002] A Deadbolt lock is a kind of lock that has cylinders or equal parts fitted to both
sides of the door with a centre locking bolt latch. When you turn the key in adeadbolt lock on the door, the latch protrudes. Current deadbolts require a 52-54mm hole to be drilled
into a door. Rim deadlatch locks are locks that are fitted to the back of the door and allow a person to unlock the door to exit through the door. The footprint of a hole in the door for
rim locks requires a hole of 32mm and need to be fitted to satisfy fire regulations.
[0003] To refit a door with rim lock, the hole in the door needs to be padded out to
accommodate the smaller diameter. This is unsatisfactory and typically putty is used to fill out the hole that is now too large. Furthermore, the mounting plate of the dead latch lock
should be fitted over the door hole. However, the size difference between the existing
mounting plate and the hole required does not provide enough support for the mounting plate. Consequently, the structural integrity of the door is compromised.
[0004] If a stainless or other metal plate with a smaller hole in the middle is used to patch up the hole, the rough contact surface between the cylinder and the plate will leave a
gap, which is not only ugly, but also cannot be secure.
[0005] The object of this invention is to provide a suitable footprint to convert the door
lock from a deadbolt to a rim lock. Meanwhile, it also provides a lock conversion fitting kit to address the above drawbacks in the prior art.
[0006] In a first aspect the invention, there is provided a lock conversion fitting kit including;
a sleeve having a body and a flange , the body adapted to fit snugly into a hole in a door and the flange to sit flush on the surface of the door; the body including a slot to accommodate a nut and prevent it from rotating in the slot; wherein a plate engages the side of the door and supports a fastening means that engages the nut through a spacer; wherein the fastening means locks the sleeve to the latch.
[0007] In preference the slot is a T-shaped slot.
[0008] In preference the sleeve includes apertures to be engaged by fastening means to support a mounting plate on the door.
[0009] In preference the fastening means is a bolt.
[0010] The lock conversion fitting kit provided by the present invention works as a solid
filler in the door hole. All the void caused by a dead lock has been filled up with stainless steel components. So, it can last for a long time. The components of the fitting kit are
clamped together by the bolt-on method. The main sleeve provides a suitable footprint and mounting screw holes for a new rim lock. Therefore, it provides strong strength for the rim
lock to mount to. In addition, this kit covers perfectly with the hole left in the door from the
deadbolt lock and provides a nice surface to install a rim lock. It fits the door well in one unit as an original lock rather than a modified lock. Besides, the rim lock which has installed by
using the lock conversion fitting kit provided by the present invention has a standard structure that is the same with other normal rim locks. It complies with fire regulations on
fire doors.
[0011] It should be noted that any one of the aspects mentioned above may include
any of the features of any of the other aspects mentioned above and may include any of the features of any of the embodiments described below as appropriate.
[0012] Preferred features, embodiments and variations of the invention may be discerned from the following Detailed Description which provides sufficient information for
those skilled in the art to perform the invention. The Detailed Description is not to be regarded as limiting the scope of the preceding Summary of the Invention in any way. The
Detailed Description will refer to several drawings as follows.

[0019] Figure 7 is another schematic back perspective of the main sleeve embodying the invention; and
[0020] Figure 8 is a schematic back combination view of the lock conversion fitting kit
embodying the invention.
[0021] The following detailed description of the invention refers to the accompanying drawings. Wherever possible, the same reference numbers will be used throughout the
drawings and the following description to refer to the same and like parts. Dimensions of certain parts shown in the drawings may have been modified and/or exaggerated for the
purposes of clarity or illustration.
[0022] The present invention is to provide a mounting platform for a rim lock to be
mounted in place of a deadbolt lock. The current footprint for the deadlock needs to be
changed to the footprint of a rim latch lock. Based on the shortcomings in the prior art, the lock conversion fitting kit of the present invention is designed to fill the existing deadlock aperture in the door with a strong material such as steel or stainless steel or brass and provide a new surface to install a rim lock, in the same place in the door. Furthermore, this kit is designed to regain the strength of the locking location on the door.
[0023] Figure 1 illustrates a current deadlatch 10 when installed in a door 12 and Figure 2 is a schematic perspective view of the footprint of the hole 14 of a hole in a door that had
a deadbolt installed. On the side 16 of the door 12, there is a latch face plate 18 attached to
the side 16 using screws 20.
[0024] Figure 3 provides a schematic exploded view of the lock conversion fitting kit
embodying the invention. The lock conversion fitting kit 22 comprises a body 24, a face plate 26 and a spacer 28. The body 24 has two parts, a flange 30 which has a hollow discus
shape and a sleeve 32 which has a hollow cylinder shape.
[0025] In some embodiments, as shown in Figure 4, the flange 30 with the discus shape
provides a hole 34 suitable for the rim lock cylinder 36 and covers the hole 14 left in the door from a deadbolt lock, which is shown in Figure 2.
[0026] As illustrated in Figure 3, the diameter of the flange 30 is bigger than the
diameter of the hole 14 left in the door from adeadbolt lock and is bigger than the diameter of the sleeve 32 as well. On the other hand, the diameter of the sleeve 32 is smaller than the
diameter of the hole 14 left in the door from adeadbolt lock. It means that when the body 24 is slid into the hole 14 left in the door from adeadbolt lock, the flange 30 will stop it
going further.
[0027] In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the face side of the flange
includes a flat portion and a gradient edge that is correspondingly shaped to the rim lock cylinder 36. When a user inserts the key into the cylinder 36, they will see the locking face of
the flange 30, which fits the door well in one unit as an original lock rather than a modified
lock.
[0028] Figure 5 is a schematic front combination view of the lock conversion fitting kit
embodying the invention whilst Figure 6 is a perspective view of the body 24.
[0029] Referring to Figure 3 face plate 26 is used similarly to the face plate 18 of the
deadbolt. Apertures 38 accommodate screws that extend into the door. The middle screw is usually the longest and extends though the spacer 28 and into a nut 42. It is put through the face plate 26, the spacer 28, a square nut 42 in sequence. The square nut 42 can just be given half a turn on the middle screw 40. The arrangement is then placed into the door.
[0030] The sleeve 32 includes a T-shaped slot 44 which is of a size to accommodate the
nut 42. Once the sleeve is inserted into the door it is adjusted until the T-slot engages the
nut. Engaging the screw locks the whole arrangement into place since the nut cannot rotate within the slot and the screws engage the locking kit.
[0031] The sleeve 32 provides mounting screw holes 46 for mounting the mounting plate 48 onto the sleeve. The installer should make sure the edge of the mounting plate 48
is aligned perfectly with the edge of the door. Then, using striker screws the mounting plate can be attached to the door as well as the sleeve.
[0032] The main sleeve is made of stainless or other fire-resistant material. Typically, it is rock-solid and does not tarnish.
[0033] According to a preferred embodiment of the lock conversion fitting kit, it can
further compromise a joint ring which is to change the size of the fitting kit to suit different size doors. This part is fitted to the back of the sleeve.
[0034] The lock conversion fitting kit provided by the present invention is designed to fill up a hole left in the door from adeadbolt lock latch. All the void which is left from the
dead lock latch which is about 10 -15 millimetre all the way around has been occupied with stainless steel. This bolt-on solution utilizes the delicate design of screw holes and the open
slots on the main sleeve.
[0035] The reader will now appreciate the present invention which provides the lock
conversion fitting kit and fitting method.
[0036] LIST OF COMPONENTS The drawings include the following integers.
deadlatch rim latch lock 12 door
14 hole 16 side
18 latch face plate
screws 22 lock conversion fitting kit
24 body 26 face plate
28 spacer
flange 32 sleeve
34 hole 36 rim lock cylinder
38 apertures middle screw
42 square nut 44 T-shaped slot
46 mounting screw holes
48 mounting plate
[0037] In summary this kit provides a mounting platform for a rim lock to be mounted in place of a deadbolt lock. The current footprint for the deadbolt is changed to the
footprint of a rim latch lock.
[0038] Since current deadbolts require a 52 - 54mm hole to be drilled into a door, if
you then wish to install a rim lock you will find the door hole in the door is too large, and one will also find the latch hold on the side edge of the door will also no longer be used and
a hole remains.
[0039] The present invention is designed to fill all space in the door with a strong metal such as Steel - Stainless Steel - brass and provide a new surface to install a rim lock, in the
same place on the door. The kit is designed to regain the strength of the locking location of the door.
[0040] The kit comes in 4 parts, and not all are always needed.
[0041] A Body filling sleeve - used to fill the 52 - 54mm hole in the door and provide a new hole of 32mm for the rim lock cylinder. This part also provides mounting screw holes for the rim latch lock to mount to for stronger installation. The face of this new device is larger than the body section and is screwed from the back to provide a clamping effect to the door. This part is made of fire-resistant material such as Steel - Brass - Stainless Steel.
[0042] A solid mass to comply with fire regulations on fire doors and allowing all the
parts to be connected for maximum strength. It fills the latch hole left in the door from the
deadbolt lock latch. This part is made of fire-resistant material such as Steel - Brass Stainless Steel.
[0043] A plate used to fill the latch face plate that is left from the deadbolt latch. It is also used to connect the above two parts and when the three are connected they clamp
together by a nut and bolt, providing strength to the device. It is made from fire-resistant material such as Steel-Brass-Stainless Steel.
[0044] A part to change the size of the device to suit different size doors. It is fitted to the back of the sleeve and in front of the rim lock to be fitted. It brings the surface of the
sleeve up to the same level of the door thickness. More than one can be used at one time.
This part is made of fire-resistant material such as Steel - Brass - Stainless Steel.
[0045] Further advantages and improvements may very well be made to the present
invention without deviating from its scope. Although the invention has been shown and described in what is conceived to be the most practical and preferred embodiment, it is
recognized that departures may be made therefrom within the scope of the invention, which is not to be limited to the details disclosed herein but is to be accorded the full scope
of the claims so as to embrace any and all equivalent devices and apparatus. Any discussion of the prior art throughout the specification should in no way be considered as an admission
that such prior art is widely known or forms part of the common general knowledge in this
field.
[0046] In the present specification and claims (if any), the word "comprising" and its
