Abstract

An apparatus for manoeuvring large equipment to enable inspection and/or repair of the large equipment. The apparatus is adapted to be set in to and/or to be anchorable to a structural support arrangement thereby anchoring the apparatus. The structural support arrangement is disposed on or within the ground. The apparatus further has a support arrangement, an equipment engagement arrangement supported by the support arrangement, and an arrangement for moving the equipment engagement arrangement. The equipment engagement arrangement is operably couplable to a piece of equipment such that forces resulting from movement of the equipment engagement arrangement are directly transferred to the piece of equipment that is in engagement with the equipment engagement arrangement.

Description

AN APPARATUS FOR MANOEUVRING MINING EQUIPMENT
The present invention relates to an apparatus for manoeuvring large equipment. In particular, an apparatus that can raise and rotate mining equipment such as excavator attachments.
Equipment for use in mining operations, including excavator buckets and other attachments, is consistently exposed to forces that wear and damage the equipment. Such equipment requires regular inspection and repair to maintain optimum functionality and safety. This equipment is large, some having dimensions up to 10 metres, and heavy, some weighing in excess of 20 tonne. Accordingly, manoeuvrability of the equipment for inspection and repair is problematic. Typically, when such equipment is being inspected or repaired it is moved by attaching the equipment to the arm of an excavator machine and raising the arm. However, using an excavator machine for this purpose is counter-productive as the machine is removed from mining operations and, where extensive repairs are required, the machine can be removed from operation for significant periods of time. Alternatively, a crane can be used to lift and manoeuvre a piece of equipment, but this is dangerous as the suspended equipment is liable to move unpredictably and, for heavy equipment, the crane could break causing the equipment to fall from height. There is therefore a requirement for a dedicated apparatus for manoeuvring mining equipment for the purpose of inspection and repair.
It is an object of the invention to mitigate or obviate the problems associated with manoeuvring large equipment, including but not limited to mining equipment, for inspection and repair.
It is a further object of the invention to mitigate or obviate the problems associated with manoeuvring excavator attachments for inspection and repair.
It is a further object of the invention to improve the safety of manoeuvring mining equipment for the purpose of inspection and repair.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided an apparatus for manoeuvring mining equipment to enable inspection and/or repair of the mining equipment, the apparatus comprising a support means, an equipment engagement means supported by the support means, and a means for moving the equipment engagement means.
Ideally, the apparatus is adapted to be anchorable to the ground.
Ideally, the apparatus is adapted to be set in to and/or to be anchorable to a structural support arrangement thereby anchoring the apparatus.

Preferably, the structural support arrangement is disposed on or within the ground. Preferably, the apparatus is adapted to be anchorable below ground and extending above the surface of the ground, or the apparatus is adapted to be anchorable on the surface of the ground.
Advantageously, the apparatus is therefore easily accessible.
In one embodiment, the apparatus is purpose built to manoeuvre large equipment such as mining equipment to enable inspection and/or repair of the equipment.
Advantageously, the apparatus typically comprises the minimum components necessary for the purpose of manoeuvring large equipment to enable inspection and/or repair of the equipment and is thereby less complex and less costly to manufacture than an excavator, which must also have a cabin, an engine and wheels or tracks for driving the excavator, for example. A purpose-built apparatus for manoeuvring mining equipment obviates the requirement to use excavators for this purpose.
Ideally, the apparatus has no independent carriage or movement means.
Ideally, the apparatus is operable to rotate a piece of equipment about two or more axes of rotation.
Advantageously, this provides greater manipulation of equipment than an apparatus that rotates a piece of equipment about a single axis only.
Preferably, the apparatus is operable to rotate a piece of equipment by at least 90°, 180° or 270° about at least one, most preferably about at least two, axes of rotation.
Ideally, the apparatus is operable to rotate a piece of equipment by 360°.
Ideally, the apparatus is operable to rotate a piece of equipment continuously clockwise or anticlockwise.
Ideally, the equipment engagement means is couplable to a piece of equipment.
Preferably, the equipment engagement means is operably couplable to a piece of equipment such that forces resulting from movement of the equipment engagement means are directly transferred to the piece of equipment that is in engagement with the equipment engagement means.
Preferably, the equipment engagement means is couplable to a piece of equipment by coupling members.
Ideally, the equipment engaging means is capable of moving a piece of equipment engaged by the equipment engaging means in multiple directions and about at least one axis as a result of directly transferring movement forces to the equipment, most preferably via the coupling members.
Advantageously, an operator can manoeuvre the equipment to gain access to the equipment whilst the equipment is operably fixed to the equipment engaging means, with little or no risk of the equipment suddenly slipping or sliding or rotating as a result of the equipment’s own weight and/or momentum. This is a huge step forward from existing cranes and/or other jigs and

Ideally, the means for moving the equipment engagement means is operable to raise a piece of equipment engaged by the equipment engagement means.
Ideally, in use, the means for moving the equipment engagement means is operable to raise a piece of equipment engaged by the equipment engagement means away from the surface of the ground or lower it to the ground.
Preferably, the means for moving the equipment engagement means is operable to apply a force to the equipment engagement means.
Preferably, the means for moving the equipment engagement means is operable to apply an upward and/or downward force to the equipment engagement means.
Ideally, the means for moving the equipment engagement means is operable to control the descent of a piece of equipment in engagement with the equipment engagement means by applying an upward force that is weaker than the downward force resulting from the weight of the equipment.

In Figures 1 to 7 there is shown an apparatus for manoeuvring mining equipment indicated generally by reference numeral 1. The apparatus 1 enables inspection and repair of large mining equipment and excavator attachments. The apparatus 1 can engage with mining equipment, vertically raise the equipment and rotate the equipment. The apparatus 1 has an upright support frame 2, an equipment engagement arrangement 3, and an arrangement 4 for moving the equipment engagement arrangement 3. The equipment engagement arrangement 3 and the arrangement 4 for moving the equipment engagement arrangement 3 is supported by the support

PCT/EP2019/059714 frame 2. The apparatus 1 is adapted to be anchored to a surface as shown in Figure 1 wherein the surface is indicated by reference numeral 5. The support frame 2 has a length of 10 metres; in use, over 95% of the support frame 2 is located below the surface of the ground as shown in Figure 1. The apparatus 1 can be installed by first lowering a structural support arrangement, such as a steel casing 80 as shown in Figure 15 into a pit, compacting soil or other material around the casing and casting the casing in to a top layer, approximately 300 mm thick, of concrete. The surrounding earth and concrete compacts around the casing and provides additional structural strength. The support frame 2 is then lowered into the casing. The support frame 2 has a squared support frame base 6, a squared top member 7 which, in use, is flush with the surface of the surrounding ground as shown in Figure 1. The support frame 2 further has four elongate support members 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d extending from each corner of the support frame base 6 to the top member 7 in a parallel, spaced apart relation.
The elongate support members 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d are further connected to each other by a first series of diagonal joining members 10a connecting elongate support member 8a to elongate support member 8b and a second series of diagonal support members 10b connecting elongate support member 8c to elongate support member 8d. The elongate support members 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d are further connected to each other by a first series of lateral joining members 11a connecting elongate support member 8a to elongate support member 8d and a second series of lateral support members 11b connecting elongate support member 8b to elongate support member 8c.
The arrangement 4 for moving the equipment engagement arrangement 3 has an arrangement 12 for raising or lowering the equipment engagement arrangement 3. The arrangement 12 for raising or lowering the equipment engagement arrangement 3 has a column 13 which is moveable through operation of a double-acting hydraulic cylinder 14. The apparatus is powered by a hydraulic circuit (not shown) and the arrangement 4 for moving the equipment engagement arrangement 3 has a series of ports 15 for connecting to a hydraulic circuit and enabling hydraulic operation of the apparatus 1. The double-acting hydraulic cylinder 14 is located within the column 13 and is fixed at an upper end to the column 13 and at a lower end to the support frame base 6 of the support frame 2. The column 13 is located within the support frame 2. The double-acting hydraulic cylinder 14, the column 13 and the support frame 2 are co-axial. The double-acting hydraulic cylinder 14 and the column 13 are movable within the support frame and can extend from the support frame 2. The double-acting hydraulic cylinder 14 is connected to the column 13 and when the double-acting hydraulic cylinder 14 is extended it engages with the column 13 and raises it up through the support frame 2.
The arrangement 12 for raising or lowering the equipment engagement arrangement 3 is operable to extend the column 13 from the support frame 2 by an extension of 10 metres. When the column 13 is in an extended position, the double-acting hydraulic cylinder 14 can be operated to retract the column 13 into the support frame 2 to locate the equipment engagement

The arrangement 12 for raising or lowering the equipment engagement arrangement 3 further has a check valve (not shown) located on the double-acting hydraulic cylinder 14. The check valve prevents the double-acting hydraulic cylinder 14 from extending or retracting in the event of a hydraulic pressure drop.
The equipment engagement arrangement 3 is operably connected to the arrangement 12 for raising or lowering the equipment engagement arrangement 3 and is located at the upper end of the column 13. The arrangement 4 for moving the equipment engagement arrangement 3 has an arrangement 16 for rotating the equipment engagement arrangement 3. The arrangement 16 for rotating the equipment engagement arrangement 3 is located at the upper end of the column 13 and is connected to the column 13. The arrangement 16 for rotating the equipment engagement arrangement 3 has a cylindrical, hydraulically-powered rotating component 17 which is connected to the hydraulic circuit via the ports 15. The arrangement 16 for rotating the equipment engagement arrangement 3 has a hydraulically driven planetary gearbox (not shown) with a final drive ratio of about 1.296 and is operable to rotate by 360°. Alternatively, the rotating component 17 may be driven by a worm drive as indicated generally by reference numeral 216 in Figure 9. The worm drive 216 has a linear worm 230 which is engaged with a worm gear 231. When the worm 230 is rotated about its axis it drives rotation of the worm gear 231. In one arrangement (not shown), the worm drive 216 can be operably engaged with the rotating component 17 to drive rotation of the rotating component Yet another arrangement 316 shown in Figures 10 and 11 for rotating the equipment engagement arrangement 3 is provided by two hydraulic rams 340a, 340b connected to the face of a driven wheel 341 which is in turn connected/connectable via a drive shaft 342 to the rotating component 17. The rams 340a, 340b are on mutually opposing sides of the wheel 341 but each extend across the face of the wheel 341 to a shared pivotal fixing point 343. The driven wheel 341 is fixed about a central axis and as one ram 340a extends, the other ram 340b retracts and vice versa, and this sequenced operation controls rotation of the rotating component 17. The rams 340a, 340b are controlled by encoders (not shown) and sequencing valves (not shown). The rams 340a 340b can thereby drive the rotating component through 360° and in either clockwise or anticlockwise direction. The rotating component 17 is in operable engagement with the equipment engagement arrangement 3 and when the rotating component 17 is rotated the equipment engagement arrangement 3 correspondingly rotates.
The equipment engagement arrangement 3 is operable to engage with mining equipment, such as an excavator bucket, as shown in Figures 1 to 5. The equipment engagement arrangement 3 is operable to engage with a range of excavator attachments, for example, an excavator bucket with a capacity of 17 m3 and weighing 20 tonnes, or an excavator bucket with a capacity of 40 m3 and weighing 40 tonnes. The equipment engagement arrangement 3 is shaped to engage with and be releasably coupled with an excavator bucket. The equipment engagement

PCT/EP2019/059714 arrangement 3 is conical in shape, with the support frame base engaging with the rotating component 17, narrowing to the point of attachment to a piece of mining equipment. The equipment engagement arrangement 3 has a series of teeth 21 that engage with a corresponding series of teeth 22 on the rotating component 17 being the gearbox, and a lock 70 for locking the equipment engagement arrangement 3 to the rotating component 17. The equipment engagement arrangement 3 has an elongate body 23, and the teeth 21 are located at one end of the elongate body 23. The equipment engagement arrangement 3 has two mutually opposing pins 18a, 18b located at the opposing end that is engaged with the rotating component 17, and at the opposing end of the elongate body 23 from the teeth 21. The two mutually opposing pins 18a, 18b are longitudinally mutually opposing and are extendable and retractable via hydraulic power. The pins 18a, 18b are operated to releasably couple the equipment engagement arrangement 3 to a piece of mining equipment, such as an excavator bucket, as shown in Figures 1 to 5. The pins 18a, 18b can retract within the equipment engagement arrangement 3, as shown in Figure 13, to release a piece of equipment that is held by the equipment engagement arrangement 3 and can extend from the equipment engagement arrangement 3, as shown in Figure 14, to engage with a piece of equipment. A piece of equipment that is coupled via the pins 18a, 18b to the apparatus is pivotable about the pin and the equipment can be manually pivoted.
The apparatus 1 has a brake arrangement for preventing movement of the equipment engagement arrangement 3. The brake arrangement involves two multi-disc hydraulic brakes located proximal to the rotating component 17 which are operable to slow and prevent movement of the rotating component 17. The multi-disc hydraulic brakes are spring operated and hydraulically released. The apparatus 1 further has a control arrangement (not shown) involving a three-spool valve bank with double-acting spools, providing six operational moves for raising, lowering and rotating the equipment engagement arrangement 3.
In use, as shown in Figures 1 to 5, a piece of mining equipment such as an excavator bucket 20, which has a capacity of 17 m3 and weighs in excess of 20 tonnes, is first set at a location where it can be engaged by the equipment engagement arrangement 3. The control arrangement is operated, if required, to open the pins 18a, 18b and move them to a retracted position where they are housed within the equipment engagement arrangement 3. The equipment engagement arrangement 3 is lowered into position proximal to the apertures 21a, 21b of the excavator bucket 20. The control arrangement is again operated to cause the pins 18a, 18b to extend through the apertures 21a, 21b thereby engaging the excavator bucket 20. The arrangement 12 for raising or lowering the equipment engagement arrangement 3 is then operated to raise the excavator bucket 20 away from the ground 5. This enables inspection and repair of the underside of the excavator bucket 20. The arrangement 16 for rotating the equipment engagement arrangement 3, being the planetary gearbox, worm drive 216, or alternative rotating arrangement 316, is then operated to rotate the equipment engagement arrangement 3 and the

PCT/EP2019/059714 excavator bucket 20, enabling a full 360° inspection of the excavator bucket 20. The brake arrangement can be operated to halt rotation of the excavator bucket 20 and hold the excavator bucket 20 in a position for a prolonged period of time to enable extensive repairs to be carried out. When inspection and repair is complete the arrangement 4 for moving the equipment engagement arrangement 3 can be operated to return the excavator bucket 20 to the ground 5. The pins 18a, 18b are then operated to move from the dosed position to the open position and to release the excavator bucket 20. The arrangement 4 for moving the equipment engagement arrangement 3 is then operated again to move the equipment engagement arrangement 3 out of the way of the excavator bucket 20. A machine can then attach to the excavator bucket 20 and continue mining operations.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 8 there is an apparatus for manoeuvring mining equipment indicated generally by reference numeral 101 having a support frame 102 and an arrangement 116 for rotating an equipment engagement arrangement. The arrangement 116 for rotating an equipment engagement arrangement is rotated by 90° relative to the support frame when compared with the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 6 and 7.
Various modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art. For example, a pivot arrangement could be included to pivot a piece of equipment that is engaged by the equipment engagement arrangement 3 relative to the equipment engagement arrangement 3. The pivot arrangement may include a hydraulic arm that is connected at one end to the equipment engagement arrangement 3 and is connectable at the other end to a coupling pin 22 of a piece of equipment which is engaged with the equipment engagement arrangement 3. Operation of the hydraulic arm would cause the equipment engagement arrangement 3 to pivot about the pins 18a, 18b. Alternatively, an adjustable linkage extending from the from the equipment engagement arrangement 3 to a coupling pin 22 a piece of equipment in engagement with the equipment engagement arrangement 3 could be adjusted to alter the angle of pivot of the equipment relative to the equipment engagement arrangement 3. In a further variation the equipment engagement arrangement 3 could have a lock for locking pivotable movement of a piece of equipment in engagement with the equipment engagement arrangement 3 about the pins 18a, 18b. In a further variation the control arrangement could have a series of switches or a computer user interface to operate the apparatus 1. In a further variation, the column 13 is rotatable relative to the support frame 2. This could be done by installing a bearing at the support frame base of the column 13 and rotating the column 13 about the bearing using a gear system or other means for applying a rotating force to the column 13.
An alternative, above-ground apparatus is illustrated in Figure 12 and indicated generally by reference numeral 401. The apparatus 401 has an equipment engagement arrangement 403 that is connected to a moveable member 450 that is in turn pivotally connected to an upright structural support member 451. 450 pivots about the upright structural support member 451 and it raises the equipment engagement arrangement 403 away from the surface. When the ram 452 retracts, the equipment engagement arrangement 403 is lowered to the surface. The upright structural support member
451 is disposed on a rotating platform 453 for improved manoeuvrability of the equipment engagement arrangement 403.
In relation to the detailed description of the different embodiments of the invention, it will be understood that one or more technical features of one embodiment can be used in combination with one or more technical features of any other embodiment where the transferred use of the one or more technical features would be immediately apparent to a person of ordinary skill in the art to carry out a similar function in a similar way on the other embodiment.
In the preceding discussion of the invention, unless stated to the contrary, the disclosure of alternative values for the upper or lower limit of the permitted range of a parameter, coupled with an indication that one of the values is more highly preferred than the other, is to be construed as an implied statement that each intermediate value of the parameter, lying between the more preferred and the less preferred of the alternatives, is itself preferred to the less preferred value and also to each value lying between the less preferred value and the intermediate value.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description or the following drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing a disclosed function, or a method or a process of attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may separately, or in any combination of such features be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof as defined in the appended claims.

Claims (20)

1. An apparatus for manoeuvring large equipment to enable inspection and/or repair of the large equipment, the apparatus being adapted to be set in to and/or to be anchorable to a structural support arrangement thereby anchoring the apparatus, the structural support arrangement being disposed on or within the ground, the apparatus further comprising a support means, an equipment engagement means supported by the support means, and a means for moving the equipment engagement means, and wherein the equipment engagement means is operably couplable to a piece of equipment such that forces resulting from movement of the equipment engagement means are directly transferred to the piece of equipment that is in engagement with the equipment engagement means, wherein the means for moving the equipment engagement means comprises a means for raising or lowering the equipment engagement means, wherein the means for raising or lowering the equipment engagement means is operable to extend upwardly thereby raising the equipment engagement means and wherein the means for raising or lowering the equipment engagement means comprises a moveable column.
2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the equipment engagement means is operable to engage with an excavator attachment.
3. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2 wherein the equipment engagement means is operable to engage with an excavator bucket having a capacity of 2 m3 to 40 m3.
4. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the apparatus is capable of supporting loads of 10 tonnes to 40 tonnes.
5. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the apparatus is operable to rotate a piece of equipment about two or more axes of rotation.
6. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the equipment engaging means comprises coupling members and wherein the equipment engaging means is couplable to a piece of equipment by the coupling members and is capable of moving a piece of equipment in multiple directions and about at least one axis as a result of directly transferring movement forces to the equipment via the coupling members.
7. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the means for raising or lowering the equipment engagement means comprises an upright structural member and a moveable member movably coupled to the upright structural member at or about an upper end of the upright structural member.
8. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the support means comprises a support frame means, the support frame means being adapted to be anchored to a surface and being further adapted to be at least partially subterranean and wherein the column is movable relative to the support frame means.

9. An apparatus as claimed in claim 8 wherein the support frame means comprises an upper support-frame end and a lower support-frame end and wherein, in use, the upper supportframe end is flush or near-flush with the surface of the ground.
10. An apparatus as claimed in claims 8 or 9 wherein the column is operable to extend from and to retract within the support frame means.
11. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the means for moving the equipment engagement means comprises a means for rotating the equipment engagement means and wherein the means for rotating the equipment engagement means is disposed on the means for raising or lowering the equipment engagement means such that operating the means for raising or lowering the equipment engagement means results in raising/lowering the means for rotating the equipment engagement means.
12. An apparatus as claimed in claims 11 wherein the means for rotating the equipment engagement means comprises a rotating component in operable engagement with the equipment engagement means.
13. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the equipment engagement means comprises a body, the body having a first end and a second end, the first end being longitudinally distal to the second end, and wherein the first end is connectable to the means for moving the equipment engagement means and the second end is connectable to a piece of equipment.
14. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the equipment engagement means comprises a means for releasably coupling the equipment engagement means to a piece of equipment, the means for releasably coupling the equipment engagement means to a piece of equipment comprises a closed position for engaging a piece of equipment and an open position for releasing a piece of equipment, wherein the means for releasably coupling the equipment engagement means to a piece of equipment comprises coupling members wherein, in the closed position, the coupling members are in a retracted position and wherein, in the open position, the coupling members are in an extended position.
15. An apparatus as claimed in claim 14 wherein the apparatus comprises an equipment pivot means that is operable to pivot a piece of equipment about the means for releasably coupling the equipment engagement means to a piece of equipment.
16. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the apparatus comprises a brake means for preventing movement of the equipment engagement means.
17. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the apparatus comprises a control means operable to control the means for moving the equipment engagement means.

19. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the equipment engagement means comprises a means for engaging with the means for moving the equipment engagement means.

An apparatus as claimed in claim 19 wherein the equipment engagement means comprises teeth or crenellations and the means for moving the equipment engagement means comprises teeth or crenellations and wherein the teeth or crenellations of the means for engaging with the means for moving the equipment engagement means are sized to correspond with, and fit around, the teeth or crenellations of the means for moving the equipment engagement means.
