[0067] Typical use of conduit 10 and conduit 20 will now be described.
[0068] In use, conduit 10/20 facilitates connection of a residential or industrial property to a water supply.
[0069] In use, first connection end 14/24 of conduit 10/20 is engaged with a further conduit in the form of a ferrule cock, as are known in the art, of a water service connection.
[0070] First connection end 14/24 is engaged with a corresponding threaded connection of the ferrule cock via a nut, such as nut 1500. First connection end flange 141/241 facilitates engagement of the nut with first connection end 14/24 of conduit 10/20. A retainer, such as retaining ring 1501, may be fitted within a thread of the nut, to retain the nut against first connection end flange 141/241.
[0071] In use, second connection end 16/26 of conduit 10/20 is engaged with a further conduit in the form of a pipe to supply of water to a residential or industrial property.
[0072] Second connection end 16 of conduit 10 is engaged with a metal pipe. A seal, such as O-ring 1000, is placed within second connection end groove 162. The metal pipe is then forced within second connection end 16, resulting in fitting engagement, typically referred to as interference fit, friction fit, or press fit as will be understood by the skilled person, of the metal pipe with second connection end 16. O-ring 1000 assists with sealing of the press fit.
[0073] Second connection end 26 of conduit 20 is engaged with a plastic pipe via a fitting, such as fitting 2000. Annular seal 2100 and clamp ring 2200 of fitting 2000 are placed within second connection end chamber 261. An end of the plastic pipe is inserted through clamp ring 2200 and annular seal 2100 within second connection end chamber 261. Nut 2300 is threaded against second connection end rim 262, securing the plastic pipe with second connection end 26 via fitting 2000.
[0074] Advantageously, conduits of the invention, such as conduit 10 and conduit , facilitate secure, substantially sealed connection with pipes, without the need for adapters as are required for standard ferrule bends.
[0075] As set out herein, second connection end 16 of conduit 10 is adapted for press fit connection with suitable pipes, typically metallic pipes. This offers considerable advantages in terms of convenience and efficiency of installation, as compared to standard ferrule bends wherein an adapter must be added to an end corresponding to second connection end 16, to allow for press fit connection.
[0076] As set out herein, second connection end 26 of conduit 20 is adapted to receive a fitting for connection with plastic pipes. This offers considerable advantages in terms of convenience and efficiency of installation, as compared to existing ferrule bends wherein an adapter must be added to an end corresponding to second connection end 16, to allow for a fitting for a plastic pipe to be received.
[0077] The skilled person will readily appreciate that a range of materials can be suitable for construction of conduit 10/20. Typically, conduit 10/20 is primarily formed from dezincification-resistant brass (DZR brass). However, without limitation, other metallic materials, such as bronze, copper, cast iron, ductile iron, stainless steel and other steel types, and metal alloys, and plastics such as PVC and CPVC may be suitable for construction of conduit 10/20.
[0078] Although conduit 10/20 as described herein has particular application for supplying water from a service connection to residential or industrial properties, it will be readily appreciated that a range of other applications are possible. By way of non limiting example, conduit 10/20 may also be beneficial to conveniently connect fluid flow in industrial production settings (such as during chemical production), and during waste water processing.
[0079] As described herein, conduit 10 is particularly adapted for press fit connection with metallic pipes. Typical metallic pipes for press fit connection include pipes comprising stainless steel, although without limitation thereto. Press fit connection may alternatively be achieved with other metallic pipes, such as those comprising other steel types, DZR brass, bronze, copper, cast iron, ductile iron, or metal alloys.
[0080] As described herein, conduit 20 is particularly adapted for connection via fitting to plastic pipes. Typical plastic pipes for connection via fitting comprise PVC, although limitation thereto. Connection via fitting may alternatively be achieved with other plastic pipes, such as polypropylene, polyethylene, and polybutylene -based plastic pipes. The form of a fitting corresponding to fitting 2000 can be adjusted, as desirable, in various ways that will be readily apparent to the skilled person (e.g. with regard to components included, and the size, shape, and materials thereof), such as to be adapted for connection with particular plastic pipes.
[0081] As described herein, first connection end 14/24 is an unthreaded connection end. First connection end 14/24 is adapted to engage with a threaded fastener, such as nut 1500, with flange 141/241 facilitating the engagement. It will be appreciated however that, in some alternative embodiments, a threaded first connection end may be used. It will be further appreciated that, in some alternative embodiments, a first connection end adapted for engagement with a non-threaded fastener may be used.
[0082] In this specification, terms such as "above" and "below"; "front" and "back"; "top" and "bottom"; "leff'and "right"; horizontalf' and "vertical", and the like, may be used for descriptive purposes. However, it will be understood that the embodiments can potentially be arranged in various orientations, and that such relative terms are not limiting and may be interchangeable in appropriate circumstances.
[0083] In this specification, unless the context requires otherwise, the terms "connection", "connected', "connecting", and the like, are not to be read as limited to direct connections, and may also include indirect connections. For example, unless the context requires otherwise, a stated first component "connected' to a stated second component may be connected via, through, or by, one or more unstated components.
[0084] It will be appreciated that the indefinite articles "a" and "an" are not to be read as singular indefinite articles or as otherwise excluding more than one or more than a single subject to which the indefinite article refers. For example, "a" pipe includes one pipe, one or more pipes or a plurality of pipes.
[0085] In this specification, the terms "comprises", "comprising", "includes", "including", and similar terms are intended to mean a non-exclusive inclusion, such that an apparatus, system, or method that comprises a list of elements does not include those elements solely, but may well include other elements not listed.
[0086] The above description of embodiments of the invention is provided for purposes of description to one of ordinary skill in the related art. It is not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to a single disclosed embodiment. In some instances, well-known components and/or processes have not been described in detail, so as not to obscure the embodiments described herein.
[0087] As described, numerous alternatives and variations to the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art of the above teaching. A method of manufacturing a conduit of unitary structure, including the step of forming a first connection end and a second connection end fixed to a substantially curved body, wherein a channel extends from the first connection end to the second connection end through the body, and wherein the first connection end is an unthreaded connection end, and the second connection end is unthreaded or comprises thread on a circumferentially expanded rim thereof.
13. A system comprising the conduit of any one of claims 1-9 or the modified ferrule bend of claim 10 or claim 11; and a pipe, wherein the pipe is connected with the second connection end of the conduit or the modified ferrule bend.
14. The system of claim 13, wherein the pipe is a metallic pipe in press fit engagement with the second connection end of the conduit or the modified ferrule bend.
15. The system of claim 13, wherein the pipe is a plastic pipe engaged with the second connection end of the conduit of the modified ferrule bend via a fitting.
16. The system of any one of claims 13-15, comprising a ferrule cock connected with the first connection end of the conduit or the modified ferrule bend.
17. A method of installing the conduit of any one of claims 1-9 or the modified ferrule bend of claim 10 or claim 11, including the step of connecting the second connection end of the conduit or the modified ferrule bend with a pipe.
18. The method of claim 17, including the step of connecting the first connection end of the conduit or the modified ferrule bend with a ferrule cock.
19. The method of claim 17 or claim 18, wherein the step of connecting the second connection end is a step of press fitting the second connection end with a metallic pipe.
20. The method of claim 17 or claim 18, wherein the step of connecting the second connection end is a step of engaging the second connection end with a plastic pipe via a fitting.
