U:U NOGGING TRACK FIELD
[0001] The present invention relates to internal and external building wall frames, and more particularly but not exclusively to steel wall frames.
BACKGROUND
[0002] In the construction of both internal and external building walls, noggings extend between adjacent wall studs to improve the strength and rigidity of the wall being formed.
[0003] In the construction of light weight steel wall frames, noggings can be provided by nogging tracks. Nogging tracks are light weight steel channel members with the central web provided with apertures through which the studs pass. The tracks are then secured to the studs.
[0004] The above discussed nogging tracks have a number of disadvantages including difficult in respect of installation, while not being well adapted for installation where a top and bottom rail are already installed.
OBJECT
[0005] It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate at least one of the above disadvantages.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
[0006] There is disclosed herein a longitudinally elongated nogging track to engage at least one stud of a frame, the nogging track including: a longitudinally extending base; at least one longitudinally extending side flange fixed to and extending from the base so that the flange extends longitudinally parallel to the base, while extending transversely from the base at an angle relative to the base; and a base flange fixed to the base, the base flange being movable between a first position at which the base flange is substantially co-planar with respect to the base, and a second position at which the base flange extends from the base for engagement with a respective stud of said frame.
[0007] Preferably, the base flange in the second position extends generally perpendicular from the base.
[0008] Preferably, the track further includes a brace, the brace having a first position at which it is substantially co-planar with respect to the base, and a second position at which the brace extends from the base to the flange to aid in retaining the flange in the flange second position.
[0009] Preferably, the track has apertures through which threaded fasteners pass to secure the track to an adjacent stud or studs.
[0010] Preferably, the track has tabs that extend laterally from the base, with the tabs having at least some of said apertures.
[0011] Preferably, the base flange has one of said apertures.
[0012] Preferably, the brace has one of said apertures, to be aligned with the aperture of the base flange so that a threaded fastener may pass through the brace, base flange for engagement with an adjacent stud.

DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
[0020] In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a nogging track 10. The nogging track 10 is configured to engage one or more of the longitudinally extending side flanges 11 of adjacent studs 12. Each stud 12 has central webs 13 extending between the side flanges 11. Each stud 12 is longitudinally elongated, with the side flanges 11 and web 13 being longitudinally parallel. Preferably, each stud 12 is a light-weight steel stud that is roller formed.
[0021] In the embodiment of Figure 1, the studs 12 are arranged in pairs so as to provide a single stud member 33. The stud member 33 has a transverse width 17. The studs 12 are identical in construction and are secured together to provide the stud member 33.
[0022] The nogging track 10 is preferably a light weight steel rolled metal section.
[0023] The track 10 is longitudinally elongated and has a longitudinally extending base (web) 14 with a pair of longitudinally extending side flanges 15, with the side flanges 15 having abutment end edges 16. The end edges 16 are spaced by the transverse width 17 of each stud 12 so that when installed the end edges 16 abut the longitudinally extending edges 18 of each stud 12. The base 14 is located between the side flanges 15.
[0024] The track 10 also has at least one attachment zone 19. Most preferably, the track 10 has a plurality of attachment zones 19, some of which may be located at the ends of the track 10, while others are located intermediate the ends.
[0025] The attachment zone 19 includes tabs 20 that are located between the end edges 16 and are co-planar with respect to the base 12. The tabs 20 extend laterally from the base 14.
[0026] The attachment zone 19 also includes a base flange 21 that is preferably formed integrally with the base 14 and a brace 22 that is also preferably integrally formed with a base
14. During manufacture, the flange 21, brace 22 and tabs 20 are cut from a flat strip that forms the track 10, with the longitudinally extending side flanges 15 being longitudinally parallel to the base 14. The side flanges 15 also extend generally perpendicular to the base 14, in a direction transverse of the base 14. Accordingly, the base 14 and flanges 15 provide the track with a "U" shaped transverse cross-section.
[0027] The zone 19 is also punched so as to have a plurality of apertures 23, as well as apertures 24 and 25. The aperture 24 is formed in the flange 21, while the aperture 25 is formed in the brace 22.
[0028] Each attachment zone 19 is usable in two configurations, thefirst configuration is shown in Figures 1, 2 and 5, while the second configuration is shown in Figures 3, 4 and 6.
[0029] In the first configuration, the flange 21 and brace 22 are retained co-planar with the base 14. The track 10 is applied to the adjacent studs 12, and threaded fasteners used to secure the track 10 to the studs 12 by passing through the apertures 23 to threadably engage the side flanges 11. Each stud 12 is located between adjacent end edges 16. The tabs 20, flange 21 and brace 22 abut the adjacent side flanges 11.
[0030] In the second configuration, the flange 21 is moved to an orientation at which it is substantially perpendicular to the base 14. In particular, the flange 21 is moved angularly about an axis 32 that extends transverse of the base 14. Portions of the base 14 and flange 21 adjacent the axis 32 plastically deform to provide for angular movement of the flange 21 about the axis 32.
[0031] The brace 22 is moved angularly about an axis 26. The axis 26 is transverse of the base 14 and generally parallel to the axis 32. Portions of the base 14 and base 22 adjacent the axis 26 plastically deform so that the brace 22 can be moved angularly to a position at which it is inclined to the base 14 by an acute angle 27.
[0032] The base 22 also has an end tab 28 that is inclined to the main portion 29 of the brace 22 by an acute angle 30. The tab 28 is moved angularly about the axis 31 relative to the main part 29, causing plastic deformation adjacent the axis 31. The tab 28 extends generally perpendicular to the base 14 and abuts the flange 21. The axis 31 is generally parallel to the axes 26 and 32.
[0033] With the tab 28 abutting the flange 21, the apertures 24 and 25 are aligned so that a threaded fastener may pass therethrough and engage in the web 13. The flange 21 is generally perpendicular to the base 14, and the brace 22 inclined to the flange 21 and base 14 by acute angles.
[0034] When the nogging track 10 is installed as shown in Figure 3, the end edges 16 are spaced from the stud 12.
[0035] The flange 21 and brace 22, when in the position as illustrated in Figure 6, leave an aperture 33 in the base 14.
[0036] With the attachment zone 19 in the configuration as shown in Figure 6, the attachment zones 19 facilitate installation where an installer has access from both sides of the wall being formed.
[0037] In the configuration as shown in Figure 5, the attachment zones 19 facilitate installation where the installer has access only to one side of the wall being formed.
[0038] Preferably, the track 10 is formed from a single strip of steel and is cut, punched and deformed to provide the configuration as shown in Figure 2. Accordingly, the tabs 20, flange 21 and brace 22 are integrally formed with the base 14 and side flanges 15.

Claims (16)

CLAIMS:
1. A longitudinally elongated nogging track to engage at least one stud of a frame, the nogging track including: a longitudinally extending base; at least one longitudinally extending side flange fixed to and extending from the base so that the flange extends longitudinally parallel to the base, while extending transversely from the base at an angle relative to the base; and a base flange fixed to the base, the base flange being movable between a first position at which the base flange is substantially co-planar with respect to the base, and a second position at which the base flange extends from the base for engagement with a respective stud of said frame.
2. The nogging track of claim 1, wherein the base flange in the second position extends generally perpendicular from the base.
3. The nogging track of claim 1 or 2, further including a brace, the brace having a first position at which it is substantially co-planar with respect to the base, and a second position at which the brace extends from the base to the flange to aid in retaining the flange in the flange second position.
4. The nogging track of claim 3, wherein the base flange is configured to extend generally perpendicular to the base, and the brace inclined to the flange and base by an acute angle when said apertures are aligned so as to receive the threaded fastener.
5. The nogging track of claim 3 or 4, wherein the brace has an aperture, to be aligned with an aperture on the base flange so that a threaded fastener may pass through the brace and base flange for engagement with an adjacent stud.
6. The nogging track of claim 5, wherein the aperture on the brace is elongate to provide a degree of adjustment of the relative angle of the flange and brace with respect to the base.
7. The nogging track of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the track has apertures through which threaded fasteners pass to secure the track to an adjacent stud or studs.
8. The nogging track of claim any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the track has tabs that extend laterally from the base, with the tabs having apertures through which threaded fasteners pass to secure the track to an adjacent stud or studs.
9. The nogging track of claim any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the base flange has apertures through which threaded fasteners pass to secure the track to an adjacent stud or studs.
10. The nogging track of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the nogging track is formed of a rolled steel metal section.
11. The nogging track of any one of claims 3 to 6, wherein the base, the base flange and brace are integrally formed of a rolled steel metal section.
12. The nogging track of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the longitudinally extending base includes an attachment zone for attachment to a respective stud.
13. The nogging track of claim 12, wherein the base flange is disposed within the attachment zone.
14. The nogging track of claim 12 or 13, wherein the longitudinally extending side flange is discontinuous through the attachment zone.
15. The nogging track of claim 12 or 13 or 14, comprising a plurality of attachment zones, some of which may be located at the ends of the track, while others are located intermediate the ends.
16. The nogging track of any one of the preceding claims, including a pair of said longitudinally extending side flanges fixed to and extending from the opposite lateral sides of the base.
