Description

- 1 M.A.G. INDUSTRIES (AUSTRALIA) PTY LTD AUSTRALIA Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT "IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO TUNDISH DEVICES" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us: G:\Patent Specifications - Word\20272 Inovtn Speci.Docx 26/11/12, 1 -2 IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO TUNDISH DEVICES TECHNICAL FIELD [0001] The present invention relates generally to plumbing fixtures. More particularly, the present invention relates to discharge outlets, drains or fittings for distribution or removal of liquids, in particular waste water and/or condensation from domestic or commercial appliances. [0002] It will be convenient to hereinafter describe the invention in relation to discharge outlets, drains or fittings for distribution/removal of washing machine waste water and/or air conditioning (AC) condensation, however, it should be appreciated that the present invention is not limited to that use only. For example, discharge outlets, drains or fittings made in accordance with the present invention could also be used for distribution or removal of: dishwashing waste water; evaporative cooling waste water; water heater condensation and/or overflow; and/or, condensation from any form of refrigeration device. Similarly, although the present will hereinafter be described in relation to discharge outlets, drains or fittings for installation in apartment buildings, or other high density domestic or commercial spaces, it should be appreciated that the present invention is not limited to that use only. It will be appreciated that discharge outlets, drains or fitting made in accordance with the present invention may be installed in any suitable location where removal or distribution of liquids, such as waste water and/or condensation, is/are required. Accordingly, the present invention should not be construed as limited to any one or more of the specific examples provided herein. BACKGROUND ART [0003] Any discussion of documents, devices, acts or knowledge in this specification is included to explain the context of the invention. It should not GAPatent Specifications - Word\20272 Inovtn Speci-Docx 26/11/12, 2 -3 be taken as an admission that any of the material forms a part of the prior art base or the common general knowledge in the relevant art in Australia, or elsewhere, on or before the priority date of the disclosure herein. [0004] Unless stated otherwise, throughout the ensuing description, the expressions "tundish(s)" or "tundish device(s)" refers to any suitably shaped discharge outlet, drain or fitting that can be used to distribute or remove liquids, such as waste water and/or condensation, from domestic or commercial appliances/apparatus. In the context of the detailed description which follows hereinafter, a "tundish device" is intended to refer to a plumbing fixture which may, for example, take the form of a funnel, hopper or discharge chamber or box, and which when installed, is fitted to piping within a domestic or commercial environment for distribution or removal of liquids. In use, one or more domestic or commercial appliance/apparatus discharge outlets or hoses is/are coupled to the "tundish device" for distribution or removal of liquids. Similarly, the expressions "liquid", "water", "waste water" and/or "condensation" should be understood to refer to any suitable liquid, be it spent, waste or otherwise, that can be delivered to a "tundish device" and thereafter distributed/removed via domestic or commercial plumbing/piping. A skilled person will appreciate such "tundish devices", and variations thereof, along with suitable installations and/or uses thereof, and hence the present invention should be construed as including within its scope any suitable device, installation and use(s) without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention herein described. Finally, the definitions of the expressions hereinbefore described are only provided for assistance in understanding the nature of the invention, and more particularly, the preferred embodiments of the invention as hereinafter described. Such definitions, where provided, are merely examples of what the expressions refer to, and hence, are not intended to limit the scope of the invention in any way. G:\Patent Specifications -Word\20272 Inovt Speci.Docx 26/11/12. 3 -4 [0005] With the growth of population in major cities around the globe, high density living is seen as a necessity to curb urban sprawl. With living space commanding a premium, architects/designers of high density dwellings are constantly having to find new ways to maximise living/entertaining spaces. As a consequence of this, traditional laundry spaces have been sacrificed in order to maximise other living areas. Traditional laundries are often replaced with laundry nooks, or laundry appliances are fitted in kitchens or other common spaces. More often than not, in such high density environments, laundry sinks are no longer fitted, meaning other forms of discharge outlets are required for waste water produced by appliances such as washing machines. A popular discharge outlet for high density domestic applications is the so called "tundish" device. A tundish is usually installed in a wall cavity proximate to where a washing machine will reside. A face plate is usually provided on the external surface of the wall, with an opening into the tundish. The tundish is fitted to internal discharge piping and provides an opening or window into which a washing machine discharge hose can be inserted for distribution/removal of waste water. The design of a tundish is such that it also provides an air gap or break in the domestic piping which ensures, for example, no back-contamination into the domestic appliance. [0006] In-wall type tundish devices are also often used for distribution/removal of condensation produced by domestic/commercial heating/cooling appliances, such as, for example, air conditioners and/or evaporative coolers. In such applications, a tundish is usually installed, and fully concealed, within a wall cavity, and includes a condensate inlet for receiving a condensate outlet hose of a domestic/commercial heating/cooling appliance, for distribution/removal of condensation via interconnected internal discharge piping. [0007] A hybrid of these two aforesaid tundish devices is an in-wall type tundish which serves as both a waste water and condensation discharge GAPatent Specifiations -Word\20272 Inovtn Speci.Docx 26/11/12, 4 outlet. That is, a tundish that includes one inlet for receiving, for example, a washing machine discharge hose, and a further inlet, positioned above the first inlet, for receiving a condensate outlet hose of, for example, an air conditioner. A problem with such hybrid tundish devices is that, in use, condensation often drips onto the washing machine discharge hose, which results in water either splashing out of the tundish device, or water leaking internally or externally of the wall cavity. Aside from being undesirable, water leakage can lead to damage of domestic appliances/items, or wall or floor surfaces. [0008] A further problem with in-wall type tundish devices that include an externally accessible opening for insertion of, for example, a washing machine discharge hose, is that wall cavities can have varying internal spaces. This can result in difficultly of fitting such tundish devices, as it can be hard to align and affix the tundish with/to its wall mounted face plate. [0009] A need therefore exists for an improved tundish device, one which overcomes or alleviates one or more of the aforesaid problems associated with known tundish devices, or one which at least provides a useful alternative. DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION [0010] According to a first aspect, the present invention provides a plumbing fixture including: a housing which acts as a receptacle for liquids; at least one outlet provided on or near a lower surface of said housing for removal of said liquids from said housing via gravity; at least one upper inlet provided on or near an upper surface of said housing for receipt of at least one upper liquid discharge outlet or hose, at least one lower inlet provided intermediate of said at least one upper inlet and said at least one outlet of said housing for receipt of at least one lower discharge outlet or hose; and, at least one upper G:\Patent Specifications -Word\20272 Inovtn Speci.Docx 26/111/12, 5 -6 inlet liquid flow deflection means disposed within said housing for reducing or eliminating any liquid supplied from said at least one upper liquid discharge outlet or hose from exiting said housing via said at least one lower inlet during use of said plumbing fixture. [0011] In a practical preferred embodiment, said housing is generally box shaped and includes: one outlet provided on said lower surface; at least one upper inlet provided on said upper surface; and at least one lower inlet provided on a front surface of said housing. [0012] Preferably said housing includes one upper inlet for receipt of one upper liquid discharge hose of a heating or cooling apparatus, and one lower inlet for receipt of one lower discharge hose of a washing apparatus. [0013] Preferably said at least one upper inlet liquid flow deflection means is a splash guard or liquid flow directing ramp disposed within said housing. [0014] According to a further aspect, the present invention provides an in wall plumbing fixture kit including: the plumbing fixture according to any one of the preceding claims for installation within a wall cavity and for interconnection with internal wall plumbing via said one or said at least one outlet of said housing of said plumbing fixture; a faceplate for installation on an external wall covering of said wall cavity, said faceplate including at least one opening for providing access to said one or said at least one lower inlet of said housing of said plumbing fixture; and, a spacer for selectively bridging any gap that may exist between said at least one opening of said faceplate and said one or said at least one lower inlet of said housing of said plumbing fixture. GAPatent Specificatons - Word\20272 Inovtn Spea.Docx 26/111/12, 6 -7 [0015] These and other essential or preferred features of the present invention will be apparent from the description that now follows. MODES FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION [0025] In the following detailed description of the invention, reference is made to the drawings in which like reference numerals refer to like elements throughout, and which are intended to show by way of illustration specific embodiments in which the invention may be practiced. It is understood that other embodiments may be utilised and that structural changes may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention. [0026] As will be readily apparent from the detailed description that follows, the present invention relates to tundish-type discharge outlets, drains or fittings/devices, and/or improvements in or relating thereto. It is preferred that the tundish devices hereinafter described are in-wall mounted type devices, however it will be appreciated that such devices could also be mounted externally of a wall, or in other convenient locations, such as, for example, under shelves or in cupboards, etc. G\Patent Specifications - Word\20272 Inovin Speci.Docx 26/11/12, 8 -9 [0027] In Fig. 1, there is shown a preferred embodiment of an in-wall tundish device 10 (hereinafter simply referred to as "tundish" 10) made in accordance with the present invention. Tundish 10 includes a generally box-shaped hopper or housing 12 which acts as a receptacle for waste water or other liquids dispensed from domestic or commercial appliances, such as, for example, washing machines and/or air conditioners (not shown). Tundish 10 can be constructed of any suitable material, but materials such as stainless steel or plastics have been found to be particularly useful and/or desirable. As can be seen, for example, in Figs. 1 to 3, housing 12 is preferably fully enclosed at its right and left sides 12a, 12b, and at its rear 12c, but is preferably only partially enclosed at its front 12d and top surface 12e. On both the front and top surfaces 12d, 12e, of housing 12 there is provided one or more inlets 14, for receiving discharge outlets 16n (see Figs. 5 to 7) of domestic or commercial appliances/apparatus such as, for example, washing machines and air conditioners (not shown). For example, in the embodiments of tundish 10 shown in Figs. 1 to 7, front surface 12d of housing 12 includes a single inlet or opening 14a for receipt of at least one discharge outlet 16n of an appliance(s), such as, for example, a washing machine discharge hose 16a as shown in Figs. 5 to 7. Similarly, top surface 12e of housing 12 includes a single inlet or opening 14b for receipt of at least one discharge outlet 16n of an appliance(s), such as, for example, an air conditioner condensate outlet hose 16b as shown in Figs. 5 to 7. [0028] Although a single inlet or opening 14a, 14b is shown on both front and top surfaces 12d, 12e, of housing 12, it will be readily apparent that more than one inlet/opening 14 n could be provided on one of both surfaces 12d, 12e - each for receipt of at least one discharge outlet 16n of an domestic or commercial appliance/apparatus (not shown). Similarly, although inlets 14n are shown as being provided on front and top surfaces 12d, 12e of housing 12, respectively, it will appreciated that inlets 14n could also be provided on other or alternative surfaces of housing 12 in accordance with the invention. Further still, although housing 12 of tundish 10 is shown and described as G:\Patent Specifications - Word\20272 Inovtn Speci.Docx 26/11/12. 9 -10 being generally "box-shaped" in design, including enclosed side and rear surfaces 12a, 12b, 12c, it will be appreciated that other configurations of housing 12 are also possible. The present invention should therefore not be construed as limited to any one or more of the specific examples provided herein. [0029] At the base of housing 12 there is provided at least one pipe engaging spigot 18, for example one as shown, for fitting or coupling tundish 10 to discharge piping 20 of a building or other structure. Spigot(s) 18 provides a passage through which waste water or other liquids dispensed into tundish 10, via appliance discharge outlets 16n, can be removed from a building by way of discharge piping 20. [0030] To enable tundish 10 to be readily installed within a wall cavity 22 (see, for example Fig. 6), protruding upwardly from top surface 12e of housing 12 there is provided an affixing tab 24 which is provided with at least one hole 24a for receipt of a nail, screw 26 or the likes. In use, when correctly aligned within a wall cavity 22, tundish 10 can be secured to a stud, batten or internal wall cladding or surface 28 by way of screw(s) or nail(s) 26. Although not shown, additional tabs 24n may also be provided, if required, in order to ensure secure attachment of tundish 10 within a wall cavity 22. [0031] As can be best seen in Figs. 5 to 7, front surface 12d of housing 12 includes an upper and lower shoulder 30a, 30b, which preferably enables a substantial portion of the front surface 12d of housing 12, that being the portion of front surface 12d including inlet or opening 14a, to protrude through an exterior wall cladding material 32, marginally into or adjacent the interior of the building or other structure. This enables the exterior wall cladding 32 to be sandwiched between the front surface 12d (adjacent shoulders 30a, 30b) of tundish 10 and a face plate 34 (see, for example, Fig. 5). This preferred means of fitting tundish 10 within a wall cavity 22 not only G.\Patent Specificatons -Word\20272 inovin Speci.Docx 26/11/12, 10 - 11 ensures secure fitting of tundish 10, i.e. limiting any movement of tundish 10 relative to exterior wall cladding 32, but also reduces the likelihood of waste water or other liquids leaking into wall cavity 22. For example, lower shoulder 30b of front surface 12d, of housing 12, acts as a protective lip that substantially reduces the likelihood of any liquid dripping or flowing into wall cavity 22, as can be best seen in Fig. 6. [0032] In Figs. 4 & 5, it can be seen that face plate 34 is suitably shaped such that it adequately conceals the opening cut into exterior wall cladding 32 for provision of, and/or access to, the front surface 12d of housing 12. Further, it can be seen that face plate 34 includes an opening 34a that is preferably matched to inlet or opening 14a of tundish 10. Of course more than one opening (not shown) could also be provided in face plate 34 if required, such as, for example, in instances where tundish 10 includes a number of inlets/openings 14n. Like tundish 10, face plate 34 can be constructed of any suitable material, but materials such as stainless steel or plastics have been found to be particularly useful and/or desirable. To enable face plate 34 to be secured to exterior wall cladding 32 and/or tundish 10, face plate 34 preferably includes at least two holes 36n for receipt of nails, screws 38n or the likes. Similarly, the front surface 12d of housing 12, of tundish 10, preferably includes at least two holes 40n aligned with face plate holes 36n, to enable face plate 34 to be secured to tundish 10, through exterior wall cladding 32, by way of screws 38n or the likes (see, for example, Figs. 5 & 6). Although the front surface 12d of housing 12, of tundish 10, is provided with holes 40n, for provision of screws 38n, etc., it will be appreciated that face plate 34 does not need to be secured to tundish 10 in order to be fitted to exterior wall cladding 32. For example, and as is shown in Fig. 7, face plate 34 may instead be simply secured to exterior wall cladding 32 by way of, for example, screws 38n. GAPatent Specifications -Word\20272 Inovtn Speci.Docx 26/11/12, 11 -12 [0033] In Fig. 8 there is shown an alternative face plate 134 that may also be used with tundish 10 of Figs. 1 to 7. This alternative face plate 134 is made in accordance with a further preferred embodiment of the present invention. Face plate 134 of Fig. 8 only differs to that of face plate 34 of Figs. 4 to 7 by way of the inclusion of a concealing flap 142. That is, face plate 134 includes a flap or cover 142 that can be selectively swung open by way of hinge 144. The inclusion of flap or cover 142 provides a convenient means of concealing the tundish 10 opening (for example, opening 14a) in situations when no appliances require drainage. Further, in situations where buildings are vacant, for example prior to sale of apartments, etc., the inclusion of a stylish flap or cover 142 to conceal a tundish 10 opening is believed to be desirable. [0034] In Fig. 6, tundish 10 is shown fitted to a wall cavity 22 in a preferred manner. Here it can be seen that within wall cavity 22, tundish 10 has been secured to an internal stud or surface 28 by way of affixing tab 24, and screw(s) 26. The front surface 12d of housing 12 projects through exterior wall cladding 32, and face plate 34 is secured to wall cladding 32 and tundish 10 by way of screw(s) 38n. Wall cladding 32 is sandwiched between face plate 34 and the front surface 12d of housing 12, adjacent shoulders 30a, 30b. Spigot 18 is securely coupled to discharge piping 20, a washing machine discharge hose 16a has been inserted into front inlet 14a, and an air conditioning condensation discharge hose 16b has been inserted into top inlet 14b. It can now be seen that tundish 10 provides a convenient means for removing waste water from, for example, both a washing machine and an air conditioner, in environments where no traditional sink or drain is available. Further, the design of tundish 10 is such that it also provides an air gap or break in the discharge piping 20 which ensures, for example, no back contamination into the appliances. G:Patent Specifications -Word\20272 Inovtn Speci.Docx 26/11/12, 12 -13 [0035] In Figs. 1 to 7, it can be seen that within housing 12, adjacent top surface 12e, tundish 10 includes a splash guard or ramp 46 that ensures that no waste water (e.g. condensation) entering into tundish 10, via top inlet 14b, pours or drips onto, for example, a washing machine discharge hose 16a inserted into tundish 10 via front inlet 14a. Referring particularly to Fig. 6, it can be seen by way of the dashed-line droplets 48 that without the inclusion of splash guard or ramp 46 within housing 12, waste water entering into tundish 10, via top inlet 14b, would drip onto washing machine discharge hose 16a, and then splash out of, or otherwise exit, tundish 10 via inlet/opening 14a. Such splashing can result in water leaking internally of wall cavity 22, or externally of wall cavity 22, down exterior wall cladding 32. Aside from being undesirable, water leakage can lead to damage of domestic appliances/items, or wall or floor surfaces. Again in Figs. 6, it can be seen that splash guard or ramp 46, of tundish 10, gathers and/or deflects water droplets 50 preferably towards the rear surface 12c of housing 12, in such a manner that those resultant droplets 50 do not drip or pour onto washing machine discharge hose 16a (or at least an upper surface thereof) during use of tundish 10. Hence, splash guard or ramp 46 substantially eliminates the likelihood of waste water exiting tundish 10 during use thereof. [0036] Although splash guard 46 is shown in the drawings as being a ramp that protrudes marginally downwardly from the inside of front surface 12d of housing 12, adjacent the inside of top surface 12e, it will be appreciated that our constructions of splash guard 46 are also possible in accordance with the present invention. For example, although not shown in the drawings, splash guard 46 could protrude downwardly at an angle from the inside of top surface 12e of housing 12. Further still, within housing 12 there could be provided a partial vertical wall that partitions a portion of the inner cavity of housing 12 in such a fashion that water droplets 50 are prevented from splashing onto the upper surface of washing machine discharge hose 16a, or any splashing is prevented from exiting tundish 10. A skilled person will appreciate many such alternatives, hence the present invention should be G:\Patent Specifications - Word\20272 Inovtn Speci.Docx 26/11112, 13 -14 construed as including within its scope any such variations in design of a splash guard or ramp 46. [0037] In Figs. 4 & 7, there is shown a tundish spacer 52, made in accordance with a further preferred embodiment of the present invention. Spacer 52 is suitable for use with tundish 10 of Figs. 1 to 7. Spacer 52 enables tundish 10 to be installed in a deeper wall cavity, such as the wall cavity 22a shown in Fig. 7. Here it can be seen that spacer 52 ensures correct alignment of face plate 34 with tundish 10, such that what would otherwise be a gap between face plate 34 and tundish 10 is bridged by way of spacer 52. As can be seen in Fig. 4, to facilitate fitting to wall cavities 22a of varying depths, spacer 52 includes at least one semi-circular cut-out 54 which ensures that a washing machine discharge hose 16a, or the likes, can be correctly inserted into tundish 10. That is, cut-out 54 ensures that there is sufficient room between spacer 52 and the rear internal surface 12c of housing 12 for a washing machine discharge hose 16a to be inserted into tundish 10. [0038] Spacer 52 may be constructed of any suitable material, but materials such as steel or plastics have been found to be particularly useful and/or desirable. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 4 & 7, spacer 52 is constructed of steel, in two-parts, which have then been joined by way of a pair of steel plates 56, using spot-welding or the likes. Of course spacer 52 could be constructed in any of a number of varying ways. Accordingly, the present invention should not be construed as limited to the specific example provided. [0039] When required, in situations where a tradesperson encounters a deep wall cavity 22a, a spacer 52 can be utilised with tundish 10 and face plate 34 to ensure correct fitting thereof. Ideally spacers 52 would be readily available to a tradesperson, and can be affixed, when required, to the face G.\Patent Specifications -Word\20272 Inovin Speci.Docx 26/11/12. 14 -15 plate 34 or tundish 10 as desired. Spacer 52 may be affixed to face plate 34 or tundish 10 by any suitable means, but the use of silicon and/or screws/rivets (not shown) have been found to be particularly useful. Alternatively, spacer 52 could be provided integral with face plate 34 or tundish 10, or be pre-fitted thereto, and include a series of break-away sections that could be removed with force, by way of pliers, etc., as desired to accommodate the particular wall cavity 22a. In situations where spacers 52 are provided for fitting by a tradesperson, such may include two opposed semi-circular cut-outs 54 to eliminate any incorrect fitting to a face plate 34, or tundish 10. For example, if only a single cut-out 54 was provided and a tradesperson affixed the spacer 52 to the face plate 134 of Fig. 8 upside down, the cut-out 54 would not be positioned in such a manner as to allow a washing machine discharge hose 16a to be correctly inserted into tundish 10. That is, unlike face plate 34 of Figs. 4 to 7, face plate 134 of Fig. 8 cannot be rotated to address the incorrect fitting of spacer 52 thereto, otherwise flap or cover 142 of face plate 134 would be upside down, and hence would not close. However, if two cut-outs 54 were provided instead of one, incorrect fitting of a spacer 52 to a face plate 134 would not be any issue, since both sides of spacer 52 would include a cut-out 54 for accommodating a washing machine discharge hose 16a. [0040] Although not shown in the drawings, cut-out(s) 54 of spacer 52 may be provided as break-away sections that can be selectively broken away from spacer 52 by a tradesperson when (and if) required.
