Description

1 TUBULAR DEAD BOLT / LATCH FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to improvements in dead bolt locks and latches. 5 BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Dead bolt lock and latches are very popular as they give peace of mind when locking domestic and commercial buildings. Most dead bolt locks are mortise locks. Proper installation of mortise locks is difficult without experience developed skills and the use of purpose built machinery. Dead bolts are more 10 common and easier to install, however, all dead bolts in the market are made together with a key cylinder system in a complete unit. As a result it is very difficult to key alike, master key, change to a restricted key or change the look of the lock. The objective of the present invention is to provide improvements in dead 15 bolt locks and latches that will overcome the above discussed problems with existing known structures. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In accordance with a first aspect, the present invention provides a lock structure comprising a bolt member movable linearly within a bolt member 20 housing to in use move between a first withdrawn non-locking or latching position and a second extended locking or latching position, a key actuated tubular lock barrel having an actuator member projecting laterally from the tubular lock barrel and movable rotationally between operative positions, a mounting means adapted to operationally mount said tubular lock barrel to said bolt member housing with 25 said actuator member operationally engaging said bolt member to drive said bolt member at least between said first and said second positions. By providing a structure as aforesaid it is possible to simply mount same in a door and if desired change the key format by changing the tubular lock barrel or the key operation mechanism in the lock barrel. Further the structure allows any 30 door architecture such as fascia plates and the like to be utilized. Still further, the tubular lock barrel may be of itself known and this may enable users of the system to have double cylinders, single cylinders, a cylinder with a twin snip, twin snips and emergency release features.
2 In the above defined lock structure, the mounting means may comprise a pair of mounting parts securable to one another, to the tubular lock barrel and to the bolt member housing. Each of the aforesaid mounting parts may include a through opening to support the tubular lock barrel in use extending therethrough. 5 Conveniently, a securing pin passes through said tubular lock barrel and engages an aperture means in at least one of said mounting parts. In a preferred embodiment, the aperture means might be located partly in both said mounting parts. The aperture means may be screw threaded to threadingly engage the securing pin. 10 In a preferred embodiment each said mounting part, in use, faces toward the other said mounting part with said bolt member housing being positioned between corresponding first surface regions of the mounting parts. Conveniently, the mounting parts may have corresponding second surface regions adapted to engage one another when the mounting parts are assembled with said bolt 15 member housing. Each said mounting part may further have a third surface region between said first surface region and said second surface region, the third surface region defining a space surrounding at least part of the tubular lock barrel when the lock structure is assembled. Conveniently, each of the mounting parts is secured to the bolt member 20 housing by at least one pin member engaging in a location aperture, the or each said pin member being located either on the mounting part or said bolt member housing. Preferably at least one and preferably two screw threaded fastener means retain said mounting parts together when in the assembled condition. If two screw threaded fastener means are provided, one such screw threaded 25 fastener means is accessible from outwardly facing surfaces of a different said mounting part. Preferably, the mounting parts can be made identical so that multiple inventory items for these parts are not required. In accordance with a still further aspect, the present invention also provides a lock structure comprising a bolt member movable linearly within a bolt 30 member housing to in use move between a first withdrawn non-locking or latching position and a second extended locking or latching position, a key actuated tubular lock barrel having an actuator member projecting laterally from said tubular lock barrel and movable rotationally about an axis parallel to said tubular 3 lock barrel between operative positions, said actuator member, in use, engaging a cam part of said bolt member to drive said bolt member at least between said first and said second positions, said cam part being restrained to move relative to said bolt member towards and away from said actuator member, said cam part 5 also being urged by spring means to move towards said actuator member, and said cam part further being restrained by guide means formed in said bolt member housing to move relative to said bolt member housing within predefined limits. Preferably the guide means defines a path of movement having a first 10 portion of movement generally parallel to the bolt member and at least one second portion of movement extending transversely from said first portion of movement. Conveniently, two said second portions of movement are provided, each extending transversely from said first portion of movement at opposite ends of said first portion of movement. 15 Other preferred features and aspects will become apparent from the following description of preferred embodiments given in relation to the accompanying drawings. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Fig 1 is a schematic layout drawing of a preferred lock structure 20 embodiment according to the present invention; Fig 2 is a partial exploded perspective view of part of the lock bolt member used in the lock structure; Fig 3 shows in plan and side view one mounting part enabling a tubular lock barrel to be secured operationally to the bolt member housing of the lock 25 structure shown in Fig 1; Fig 4 shows a schematic top plan view of a bolt member used in a preferred lock structure according to the present invention; Figs 4a, 4b are schematic section views of Fig 4, partly exploded, taken respectively along lines A-A and B-B of Fig 4; 30 Fig 5a is a schematic view of the lock bolt shown in Figs 4, 4a and 4b with the operating key commencing to turn; Fig 5b is a schematic view similar to Fig 5a where the cam has pushed the bolt member to a lock position; 4 Fig 6 schematically represents the preferred lock structure where the bolt member has a forward hardened slot; Figs 7a, 7b schematically show the preferred lock structure with a sliding door dead bolt latch; and 5 Fig 8 represents the preferred lock structure where the bolt member may have a latch deadlock at its forward end. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring to the drawings, Fig 1 shows schematically a layout drawing of the lock structure 10 according to the present invention. The lock structure 10 10 comprises a bolt member 11 linearly movable in a bolt member housing 12 with a forward fascia plate 13 for securing the structure 10 into a door, the fascia plate 13 being mounted to the door edge with the bolt member housing 12 extending into a mounting recess in the plane of the door. A tubular lock barrel 14 extends at right angles to the bolt member housing 12 and in use, each end of the tubular 15 lock barrel 14 will be located at or adjacent opposed faces of the door. A suitable fascia or mounting plate of any desired design or appearance can then be attached to the door faces to surround the ends of the tubular lock barrel to provide a suitable and desired finished appearance to the lock installation. The fascia plates can of course be changed after installation to provide a different 20 appearance for the lock structure if desired. The tubular lock barrel 14 is mounted to the bolt member housing 12 by removable mounting means 15 comprising a pair of mounting parts 16, one of which is illustrated in Fig 3. The pair of mounting parts 16 are preferably identical to one another to limit the inventory of parts for the complete lock structure 10. 25 Each part 16 includes a ring structure defining an internal through opening 17 sized and configured to allow the tubular lock barrel 14 to pass therethrough (Fig 1). Each mounting part 16 includes a pair of location pins 18 that in use are received in location holes 19 in the side walls of the bolt member housing 12 adjacent its lower face. Alternatively the mounting means could be mounted 30 adjacent the top face of the housing 12 if desired. Utilizing two spaced pins 18 ensures a stable structure and connection between the housing 12 and the mounting means 15. Of course there are two mounting parts 16 and the location holes 19 for each part will be located on opposite side walls, both adjacent the 5 lower or upper face of the housing 12. Each mounting part 16 includes a cut away section with five surface regions 20 such that when the two parts 16 face one another, the cut away first surface regions 20 define a rectangular space to receive at least part of the cross-sectional shape of the housing 12. Each 5 housing part 16 includes second surface regions 27 adapted to engage one another when two such parts 16 are assembled with a bolt member housing 12. Each housing part 16 still further includes a cut away section with third surface regions 21 to provide space for the tubular lock barrel actuator member 22 to move in a rotational movement as shown in Fig 4. The mounting part 16 includes 10 a pair of apertures 23, 24 in the second surface region 27, one for receiving a screw threaded fastener entering from that face and the other for receiving the end of a screw threaded fastener entering from the other face of the opposite mounting part 16. A location pin 40 and location pin receiving bore 25 in the second surface region 27 are also provided. Finally a part bore 26 is formed on 15 the face 27 such that when the two mounting parts 16 are operationally engaged a complete bore 26 is formed. The complete bore 26 enables a threaded securing pin 28 (Fig 1) to pass therethrough and be engaged in a threaded bore 29 in the tubular lock barrel 14. Reference will now be made to Fig 2 showing an inner end 30 of the bolt 20 member 11. An L-shaped cam member 31 is received in a recessed zone of the end 30 such that one leg 32 slides in the recess 33 and the other leg 34 moves in the recess 35 with a spring 36 pushing the leg 34 downwardly in the illustrated drawing. The leg 32 includes a projection 37 that is engaged in a guide track 38 formed in a side wall 39 of the housing 12. The guide track conveniently has a U 25 shaped configuration with a first portion 50 extending generally parallel to the bolt member 11 and transverse second portions 51, 52 extending transversely from opposite ends of the first portion 50. Thus when the projection 37 is in one of the second portions 51 or 52 the bolt cannot be moved linearly within the housing 12. In this configuration, the cam member 31 moves under imposed engagement with 30 the actuator member 22 (Figs 5a, 5b) against the urging forces applied by the spring 36 with the movement of the cam member 31 and thereby the bolt member 11 being restricted by the projection 37 moving in the guide track 38.
6 As can be seen in Figs 6, 7a, 7b, 8, the free or outer or latching end 41 of the bolt member 11 can be modified to provide various ends including a hardened metal end 54, a movable latch end 55 (movable under loading from a spring 57) and a sliding door hook catch 56. 5
