Description

1 Description AUSTRALIA Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT IMPROVED UMBRELLA PICKET The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me. IMPROVED UMBRELLA PICKET For many years umbrellas have been stabilised by inserting the umbrella shaft into a gap/hole in outdoor furniture and/or anchored by a heavy weight to prevent the umbrella from blowing away. This invention has been specifically devised to allow umbrellas to be secured in all types of soil conditions e.g. grass, and stony, gravelly or other hard ground conditions using a portable picket without the need for outdoor furniture or an anchor weight. An umbrella picket in accordance with this invention has at the top a barrel shape with highest part a flat reinforced head, with a spring button clip on point for the umbrella shaft and two cross blades joined together with a sharp point at other end for entry into the ground. The footrest at the end of the barrel near the blades assists entry into soft surfaces.
2 It has been found in practice, that beach umbrellas can be stabilised in hard sand conditions in areas other than the beach. This is accomplished in the following way:- beach or other umbrellas, that utilise metal tube, or other type of bottom shafts, can be fitted with a removable and clip on type of point, of any desired metal or material, that can be installed in any soil type or gravel etc. situations. One particular method is by metal fabrications, consisting of a hollow metal receiver section Fig. 1 ??? 1. The receiver section also accommodates the pair of interlocking blades, of any desired shape, length or size Fig. 2 ??? 1, when locked together as in Fig. 1 ??? 2, the assembly is fitted inside the receiver section and permanently secured. To facilitate installation into the various soil types and conditions, the receiver has a hammer point, Fig. 1 ??? 3. Also incorporated, is a small foot step Fig. 1 ??? 4, that allows the umbrella bottom shaft, when the umbrella picket is attached, to be readily pushed into softer ground conditions and or hard compacted sand, per foot pressure. To support the foot step only one of the two blade sections has a built in support base Fig. 2 ??? 2. The foot step is attached to the support and also to the receiver section flange as at Fig, 1 ??? 4. The receiver section Fig. 1 ??? 1, is fitted internally with a small spring button clip Fig 1 ??? 5, that aligns and attaches with a corresponding hole Fig 1 - 7 in the end of the bottom shaft of the umbrella. The assembly can also be moulded in reinforced plastic material, or in alloy or other materials.

Claims (5)

2. An umbrella picket as claimed in claim 1, whereupon the receiver has a reinforced head to secure by use of a hammer in hard terrain and a footrest to assist entry into most surfaces.
3. An umbrella picket according to any of claims 1 and 2 wherein the cylinder, footrest and blades are made of steel
4. An umbrella picket can according to any of the claims 1-3 wherein the surface is very smooth to allow entry into hollow shaft holding the umbrella.
