Description
AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT ADJUSTABLE LANTERN REFLECTOR The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: 00 O ADJUSTABLE LANTERN REFLECTOR
O
Lanterns, as referred to in this specification, are characterized by their use of a single 6 volt cuboid dry cell battery with the approximate dimensions of 66 mm x 66 mm x 99 mm.
They usually have a lens of approximately 100 mm diameter and are widely used by motorists, campers, and for general household use, as they are robust, inexpensive, produce a powerful beam and are convenient to carry.
However when placed on a flat surface, their usefulness is limited by the fact that the direction of the light beam produced is restricted, by the shape and form of most available types of lantern, to either horizontal or vertical.
O
O
This invention will improve the practical usefulness of the lantern by providing a simple 00 adjustable reflector, enabling the light beam produced by the lantern to be reflected laterally by
O
O up to 180 degrees, from its original source direction and, radially, in any direction relative to the static attitude of the lantern.
The same principal may be applied to torches and flashlights of all shapes and sizes.
An adjustable reflector in accordance with this invention comprises a flat piece of thin, rigid but malleable, reflective sheet material, cut into a shape that provides a reflector section of approximately the same area as the lantern lens, a narrower stem section of a length sufficient to hold the reflector section clear of the lantern lens when in use and, at right angles to the stem section, a strap section which can be bent by hand to fit the form of the outer circumferential plane of the lantern lens bezel. Once bent to the correct curvature, the strap section of the device is attached to the outer circumferential plane of the lantern lens bezel by means of double sided adhesive tape, Velcro, or some other means of attachment such as an elastic band or belt.
The adjustable reflector is preferably made from sheet metal, although certain types of plastic material may also be suitable.
In use the lantern is placed on a flat surface, either horizontally or vertically, and switched on.
The stem section of the device is then bent by hand at the point where it joins the reflector section, or anywhere along its length, causing the reflector section to articulate away from the horizontal or vertical attitude, thus deflecting the lantern beam to the desired angle of inclination.
The invention may be better understood with reference to the illustrations of embodiments of the invention in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the adjustable reflector 1 in flat form juxtaposed next to a common 6 volt lantern 2 in preparation for fitting. This view also indicates the three sections of the adjustable reflector. Reflector section 1 a, stem section 1 b, and strap section 1 c.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the adjustable reflector 1 fitted to the lantern 2 and Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the reflector section 1 a of the device articulated to the desired angle.
