Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys PO Box 222, Mitcham, SA 5062 Adjustable Wrench The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- ADJUSTABLE WRENCH Z FIELD OF THE INVENTION ¢€3 The present invention relates to an adjustable wrench, wherein by a Mc, normal driving section of the fixed jaw, an abnormal engaging section, a 00 recessed section of the movable jaw and a driving portion, the adjustable CI wrench can lock and detach normal nuts or abnormal nut easily without wearing or destroying the nuts. t", 0 BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION With referring to USP3916735, USP6848343 and USP5551322, these patents provide adjustable wrenches which have recesses at the clamping openings of two jaws so as to clamping an apex of a first clamping side of a normal nut. Thus in operation, the fixed jaw will not contact the apex of the nut. No stress will destroy the nut. Furthermore, cambered recess is formed for preventing the corners of the nuts to be destroyed.
However above mentioned still has the following defects.
1. USP3916735 and USP5551322 have the effect of protecting the corners of the nut. However they can destroy the sides of the nut so as to have round corners.
2. Generally, in repeated operation, the corners of the nut will wear.
This will induce haired area at the side near the corner so that it is difficult to clamp the nut. As a result the nut is an abnormal nut. However no prior art can resolve above mentioned problem.
Furthermore, some patents, such as USP5860339, USP6009778, USP5148726, USP5117714, USP5074171 and USP6145414 have above mentioned functions. However in these designs, when driving a nut, the tip teeth will destroy the sides of the nut (that is haired sides), when the 2 S corners of the nut are rounded and the nut is released by using a spanner, the S haired side easily hurts the hand of the operator.
0 z For the purposes of this specification the word "comprising" means "including but not limited to", and the word "comprises" has a corresponding meaning. Also a S reference within this specification to a document is not to be taken as an admission 00 that the disclosure therein constitutes common general knowledge in Australia.
O SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION 0 Accordingly, the primary object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable wrench, wherein by a normal driving section of the fixed jaw an abnormal engaging section, a recessed section of the movable jaw and a driving portion, the adjustable wrench can lock and detach normal nuts or abnormal nut easily without wearing or destroying the nuts.
To achieve above objects, the present invention provides an adjustable wrench, comprising: an adjustable wrench having a handle and a head; one end of the handle being extended with a head; the head having a longitudinal fixed jaw; the head being formed with a transversal sliding groove and a longitudinal receiving groove which is communicated to the sliding groove; a movable jaw being received in the sliding groove; the movable jaw being engaged to a directional control element in the receiving groove; the directional control element having a form like a worm rod so that the movable jaw being movable with respect to the fixed jaw so that the size of the clamping opening is adjustable; each of the fixed jaw and movable jaw having a respective end surface; the two end surfaces being faced to one another; the end surface of the fixed jaw having an upper surface and a lower surface which are formed with an angle of 120 degrees therebetween; a recess being formed at the connection of the upper end surface and the lower end surface for receiving an end of a nut; an upper end of the recess S being formed with a guide surface for resting upon a normal nut; thus the S guide surface being defined as a normal driving section; a side different O from the normal being formed with an engaging groove which is connected

to the guide surface of the normal driving section; an end portion of the engaging groove connected to the abnormal engaging section being installed S with a resisting angle which has a teethed shape; and the end surface of the 00 movable jaw having a recessed section; a lower side of the recessed section being formed wit a driving portion which is formed as a protruding arc; the 0 driving portion is formed as a stepped shape.

0 DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION z In order that those skilled in the art can further understand the present invention, a description will be provided in the following in details.
However, these descriptions and the appended drawings are only used to 00 cause those skilled in the art to understand the objects, features, and characteristics of the present invention, but not to be used to confine the 0 scope and spirit of the present invention defined in the appended claims.
0 Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the clamping jaw of the present invention is illustrated.
An adjustable wrench 1 has a handle 10 and a head 20. One end of the handle 10 is extended with a head 20. The head 20 has a longitudinal fixed jaw 21. The head 20 is formed with a transversal sliding groove 22 and a longitudinal receiving groove 23 which is communicated to the sliding groove 22. A movable jaw 24 is received in the sliding groove 22. The movable jaw 24 is engaged to a directional control element 25 in the receiving groove 23. The directional control element 25 has a form like a worm rod so that the movable jaw 24 is movable with respect to the fixed jaw 21 so that the size of the clamping opening 26 is adjustable.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 2A, each of the fixed jaw 21 and movable jaw 24 has a respective end surface. The two end surfaces are faced to one another. The end surface of the fixed jaw 21 has an upper surface 211 and a lower surface 212 which are formed with an angle of 120 degrees therebetween. A recess 213 is formed at the connection of the upper end surface 211 and the lower end surface 212 for receiving an end of a nut.
An upper end of the recess 213 is formed with a guide surface 214 for resting upon a normal nut. Thus the guide surface 214 is defined as a normal driving section A. A side different from the normal 213 is formed S with an engaging groove 215 which is connected to the guide surface 214 of Nl the normal driving section A. An end portion of the engaging groove 215 0 connected to the abnormal engaging section B is installed with a resisting

angle 216 which has a teethed shape.
The end surface of the movable jaw 24 has a recessed section 241. A lower side of the recessed section 241 is formed wit a driving portion 242 00 which is formed as a protruding arc. The driving portion 242 is formed as a stepped shape.
O The effect of the movable jaw 24 and fixed jaw 21 having the end 0 surfaces is formed with the following functions.
With referring to Fig. 3, when a normal nut 30 is clamping in the adjustable wrench 1, normally, the sides of the normal nut 30 are adhered to the upper end surface 211 and lower end surface 212 completely. The first clamping edge 32 is located in the recess 213. The driving portion 242 of the movable jaw 24 resists against a center portion of the second clamping edge 33. The second clamping edge 33 is at a position corresponding to the recessed section 241.
Referring to Fig. 4, when the adjustable wrench 1 is tightened clockwise, the guide surface 214 of the normal driving section A of the fixed jaw 21 will resist against the first clamping edge 31. The fixed jaw 21 of the movable jaw 24 is retained at the center portion of the second clamping edge 33. Because the driving portion 242 is at the position, in locking or detaching, the first apex 32 and second apex 34 of the normal nut 30 are at the recessed section 241 of the recess 213 so that the adjustable wrench 1 will not destroy the first apex 32 and second apex 34.
Other than above mentioned effect, with referring to Fig. 5, in locking or detaching an abnormal nut 40 with wearing apexes, when the first clamping edge 41 of the abnormal nut 40 is not contact the guide surface 241 of the normal driving section A, however as illustrated in Fig. 5A, by the engaging S groove 215 in the abnormal engaging section B, the first clamping edge 41 N of the abnormal nut 40 will resist against the wearing apex 43. The 0 movable jaw 24 still resists against a center portion of the second clamping

edge 42 through the driving portion 242 at a lower end thereof. Thus the abnormal engaging section B can be detached or locked easily.
In the present invention, the guide surface 241 of the normal driving 00 section A of the fixed jaw 21 is slightly lower than the recess 213 and the movable jaw 24 is formed with a recessed section 241 and a driving portion 0 242. Thus, by this simple structure, the apex of the nut is not contacted by 0 the side of the jaws. In the operation, the apex will not wear and is not destroyed in locking or detaching operation. Moreover, the designs of the engaging groove 215 and the resisting angle 216. The rounded nut can be detached or attached easily.
The present invention is thus described, it will be obvious that the same may be varied in many ways. For example, in Figs. 6 and 6A, the assisting angle 243 between the driving portion 242 of the movable jaw 24 and the recessed section 241 may be an acute angle so that the normal nut 30 will not contact the recessed section 241. Such variations are not to be regarded as a departure from the spirit and scope of the present invention, and all such modifications as would be obvious to one skilled in the art are intended to be included within the scope of the following claims.

Claims (7)
1. An adjustable wrench, comprising: 0 an adjustable wrench having a handle and a head; one end of the handle Z being extended with a head; the head having a longitudinal fixed jaw; the head being formed with a transversal sliding groove and a longitudinal S receiving groove which is communicated to the sliding groove; a movable 00 jaw being received in the sliding groove; the movable jaw being engaged to a directional control element in the receiving groove; the directional control 0 element having a form like a worm rod so that the movable jaw being 0 movable with respect to the fixed jaw so that the size of the clamping opening is adjustable; each of the fixed jaw and movable jaw having a respective end surface; the two end surfaces being faced to one another; the end surface of the fixed jaw having an upper surface and a lower surface which are formed with an angle of 120 degrees therebetween; a recess being formed at the connection of the upper end surface and the lower end surface for receiving an end of a nut; an upper end of the recess being formed with a guide surface for resting upon a normal nut; thus the guide surface being defined as a normal driving section; a side different from the normal being formed with an engaging groove which is connected to the guide surface of the normal driving section; an end portion of the engaging groove connected to the abnormal engaging section being installed with a resisting angle which has a teethed shape; and the end surface of the movable jaw having a recessed section; a lower side of the recessed section being formed wit a driving portion which is formed as a protruding arc; the driving portion is formed as a stepped shape.
2. The adjustable wrench as claimed in claim 1, wherein the driving portion of the movable jaw has a cambered arc shape.
3. The adjustable wrench as claimed in claim 1, wherein the driving portion of the movable jaw has a protruded trapezoidal shape.
4. The adjustable wrench as claimed in claim 1, wherein the resisting S angle of the abnormal engaging section of the fixed jaw is an acute angle. 0
5. The adjustable wrench as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein an Z assisting apex is formed between a driving portion of the movable jaw and e¢3 the recess.
6. The adjustable wrench as claimed in claim 6, wherein the assisting 00 S apex is an acute angle.
7. The adjustable wrench as claimed in claim 1, wherein the driving portion of the movable jaw is installed at an approximate central portion of 0 a side capable of resisting against the driving unit.
