Description

Patents Act 1990 Complete Specification Innovation Patent DUEL FUNCTION FENCE RAIL The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the application to the existing system it is to fit within: N DUEL FUNCTION FENCE RAIL
O
This invention relates to the metal panel fence industry where it is popular to have an extension or infill panel above the main section of the fence for increased privacy or decorative purposes. This invention has been designed to Sprovide a simple and cost effective rail, which may be used, in any of the horizontal positions that panel fence rails are usually used.
oo 00 The fence rail has its horizontal surfaces shaped into three separate faces,
OO
0 which form an elongated Z shape effecting a V shape for a fence extension infill panel to sit into the said V on the top edge, while at the same time serving to hold the sheet metal fence panels below by means of its two side S and vertical faces.
While this fence rail may be used as a middle rail fitting between the sheet metal panels below and the infill panel above, it may also serve as a top rail with the mouth of the U facing downwards or as a bottom rail with the mouth of the U facing upwards.
Conventional infill panels require additional considerations when fitting to the top edge of a panel fence. Metal infill panels have the bottom edge folded at 900 and is fixed to the central horizontal rail by means of a screw or rivet.
Plastic or timber infill panels are usually held on their lower edge by means of an additional rail with the said rail having its mouth of the U facing upwards, with brackets or spring clips used top and bottom to keep the infill panels in place.
The invention involves a rail with the horizontal face so shaped that it will achieve a hold on the lower metal panel fence and the infill without the need Sof additional fixings or folds.
The fence rail would usually be made of roll formed sheet metal. This invention may be better understood with reference to the illustrations on page Figure 1 shows an elevation as a cutaway A-A of figure 2 of a duel function rail. It shows the infill panel fitting into faces 6 and 7 and the lower panels 9 fitting into the mouth of rail 2.
Figure 2 is an elevation showing a typical panel fence with infill panel.
Figure 3 shows an isometric view of an infill panel between two rails.
00
(N
00 Figure 4 is a cutaway and elevation of a conventional panel fence with a 0 10 metal infill panel 10, which requires fixing of the lower edge to rail 13.
Figure 5 is a cutaway end elevation of a conventional panel fence with a Iplastic infill 11 fitted between rail 12 and additional rail 16 with a spring clip 1 7 on the top and bottom of the said infill panel.
While the duel function rail is ideal when used with a plastic infill 1 1, metal infill panel 10 can readily be used without the need of the lower edge fold.
In addition to saving components and fixings, the duel function rail eliminates rattling noises caused by sideways movement at the top of infill panel 10, in light to moderate winds.
Claims (4)
- 2. A fence rail as in claimed 1, wherein the V shape in the horizontal face 'fl 10 holds the fence extension panel and resists sideways movement of the said a panel without the need to have folded edges on the said panel or to use additional brackets or screws.
- 3. A fence rail as in claim 1 and 2, which also can be used at the top or bottom of a fence to serve in the usual manner, wether it be with or without an extension panel.
- 4. A fence rail as in claims 1-3, which is roll formed from sheet metal.
- 5. A fence rail substantially as herein before described with reference to figures Stephen Eric Doven 16 September 2005
