Description

P100/012 Regulation 3.2
AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990
ORIGINAL
COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT Invention Title: "FOLDABLE BABY SEAT" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: 1 TITLE: FOLDABLE BABY SEAT BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention THIS INVENTION relates to a foldable baby seat.
The baby seat is particularly suitable for, but not limited to, restraining a baby or child on a chair such as a kitchen chair or dining chair.
2. Prior Art Any parent of young children has had the necessity for a seat for their baby or young child, eg., when visiting friends, shopping or other activities where a conventional baby seat or high chair was not available.
A standard chair does not restrain the baby or child from falling, which could lead to serious injury.
While portable baby seats have been proposed in the past, they are usually not readily foldable when not in use and/or do not provide sufficient restraint for the baby or child therein.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide a foldable baby or child seat which relatively simple to manufacture and is easy to use.
It is a preferred object of the present invention to provide such a seat which provides effective restraint for the baby or child therein.
It is a further preferred object of the present invention to provide such a seat which can be compactly folded when not in use and which can be easily cleaned.
2 Other preferred objects of the present invention will become apparent from the following description.
In a broad aspect, the present invention resides in a foldable baby seat including: a flexible panel having a back section and a front section interconnected by a waisted seat section; a pocket on, or attached to, the back section to engage the back rest of a chair; a first pair of straps on the front section engageable with the back rest of the chair to restrain a baby or child in the baby seat; and a second pair of straps on the back or seat section to secure the baby seat to a seat portion of the chair.
Preferably, at least one loop is provided on the pocket and the first pair of straps are passed through the loop or loops and then tied together.
Preferably, the pocket has at least one elasticised portion to engage the back rest of the chair.
Preferably, in use, the first pair of straps pass under the baby or child's arms and support the front section against the baby or child's chest.
Preferably, the baby seat is manufactured from fabric, which may be provided with a plasticised cover to assist cleaning any food or other waste(s) therefrom.
Preferably, the straps are formed from strong fabric.
3 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS To enable the invention to be fully understood, a preferred embodiment must now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a front perspective view of the foldable baby seat, fitted to a kitchen chair, and restraining a young child; FIG. 2 is a rear view of the seat prior to use; and FIG. 3 is a rear view showing the baby seat fitted to the chair.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS The foldable baby seat can have a fabric panel 11 forming a back section 12 and front section 13 interconnected by a waisted seat section 14. A pocket 15, with an elasticised mouth 16 is provided at the top of the back section 12 and the sides of the panel 11 and pocket 15 are reinforced with fabric tape 17. A pair of loops 18 are provided adjacent the elasticised mouth 16.
A first pair of straps 19 are secured to the front section 13 and a second pair of straps 20 are secured to the back or seat sections 12, 14.
The operation of the seat 10 will now be described.
The pocket 15 is placed over the backrest 31 of a kitchen or dining chair 30 and the front and seat portions 13, 14 are laid on the seat portion 32 of the chair 30. The baby or child 40 is placed on the chair 30 and the front section 13 is lifted up between the baby's legs 41 so that the front section is against the front of the baby's torso 42. First pair of straps 19 are 4 passed through the loops 18 and are tied together, as shown in FIG. 3, to restrain the baby 40 in the seat The second pair of straps 20 are then tied together under the seat portion 32 to secure the baby seat 10 to the chair The first pair of straps 19 pass under the baby's arms 42 to allow, eg., the baby to feed himself/herself, while the front section 13 ensures that the baby 40 is safely restrained in the seat When the baby 40, eg., has finished eating, the first pair of straps 19 may be untied to enable the baby 40 to be released, and lifted from, the baby seat 10. The second pair of straps 20 are then untied and the baby seat 10 can be lifted free from the chair It is preferred that the panel 11 and pocket 15 be manufactured from a strong fabric material, which may have a plasticised cover to enable easy removal of any food, faeces or other waste materials. Preferably, the straps 19, 20 are manufactured from strong tape fabric material.
Preferably, the baby seat 10, when not in use, can be folded and placed in a simple carrying container, which may be placed in oron a baby stroller or the like.
Various changes and modifications may be made to the embodiments described and illustrated without departing from the present invention.
