Abstract

A sensor (1), for determining the ion strength of divalent or higher cations, in particular for determining the hardness of water, should permit a direct and continuous determination of the strength of said ions with a particularly low complexity. According to the invention, the sensor (1) is introduced into a medium (2) with a sensor unit (8) which may be brought into contact with the medium (2), which comprises a copolymer (14) as sensor material, including N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and a complex-forming monomer (KMX) with at least one carboxylic acid group, where the general formula NIPAMm KMXn with m = 1 and n = 1 is valid.
