Abstract

The invention relates to a method for operating an electropneumatic trailer brake system (1). At least two control valves (210 to 215) are assigned to each side of at least one trailer axle (25), and these valves control a pressure, which corresponds to a desire to brake and which acts upon at least one brake unit (130 to 135) of the at least one trailer axle (25). The invention also relates to an electropneumatic trailer brake system (1), comprising an electronic controlling and/or regulating device (17) for detecting and/or processing the operating state of the trailer brake system (1) and for controlling and/or regulating valves (210 to 215, 220, 221) of the trailer brake system (1). The inventive method is characterized in that only one control valve (210 to 215) at a time is activated for controlling the pressure for the at least one brake unit (130 to 135). An additional inventive method provides that compressed air from a control circuit (3) is used for activating at least one valve (20, 221), which is located upstream from the brake units (130 to 135), in the event the trailer brake system (1) malfunctions. The inventive trailer brake system has, on each side of at least one trailer axle (25), at least three control valves (210 to 215). An additional inventive trailer brake system is characterized in that a desire to brake can be carried out by activating, on each side of at least one trailer axle (25), an air-admittance valve (212, 213) and an air-release valve (214, 215), whereby only one valve (212 to 215) of the four valves (212 to 215) can be activated at a time.
