Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT DECORATIVE LIGHT STRIP The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: DECORATIVE LIGHT STRIP This invention relates to improvements in devices for Decorative Light Strips.
Decorative Light Strips is an illuminated device that can be placed on or about an item such as a wall or edge of a building or any other item such as signage or along the edge of rails or stairs to either highlight, define, enhance or illuminate the item. In the past light sources such as neon or fluorescent tubes or strings of globes have been used to achieve this with a result that the effects produced with the Decorative Strip are limited and the high failure rate of globes and tubes along with their limited life span results in a high cost of maintenance.
These problems are overcome by the present invention, which provides a decorative light strip comprising of a row of Light Emitting Diodes placed at intervals along a base device affixing and powering them a preferred means being a printed circuit board. This row of Light Emitting Diodes is covered by an outer box shaped cover of a material to further diffuse the light emitted from the Light Emitting Diodes and this cover is spaced at a distance away from the Light Emitting Diodes so that the light emanating directly from the Light Emitting Diodes is altered so the appearance of the Light Emitting Diodes has changed to appear a more solid line of light.
In one form of the invention a row of Light Emitting Diodes are spaced along a printed circuit board or other means of affixing and powering them. A cover of light diffusing material a preferred material being similar to "K12 polystyrene" is place over and along the row, boxing it in from the top, front and bottom. The light emitted from the Light Emitting Diodes are diffused by the cover before being transmitted to the eye giving the impression of a more solid line of light than the row of Light Emitting Diodes alone. The effect is derived from a scattering of the light emanating from the Light Emitting Diodes.
In one form of this invention the cover contains a single row of Light Emitting Diodes. In another form of this invention the cover contains two or more rows of Light Emitting Diodes.
In another form of this invention the Light Emitting Diodes consist of different or varying colours which being powered by varying the mixture and intensity of the light emitted from them, various colours and/or cycles of colours can be created. Thus in with the diffusing cover described above, the line of light appears to change colour and/or intensity of colour.
In one form of this invention the diffusing cover has corners of 45 degrees relative to each other making a surface of straight planes giving the appearance of a flat cover. In another form of this invention the cover can be curved to an oval or rounded shape having the appearance of a rounded cover.

Claims (4)

1. A decorative light strip consisting of a row of spaced Light Emitting Diodes which is covered by a containing light diffusing box shaped cover along a minimum of three planes with straight surfaces and edges at a forty five degree angle to each other being at a distance from the row of Light Emitting Diodes which diffuses the light emanating from the Light Emitting Diodes so the light perceived visually appears to be more solid than the Light Emitting Diodes alone.
2. A decorative light strip of claim 1 wherein each of the Light Emitting Diodes can be differing colours and can be powered in varying intensity of light thus emitting light into the signage panel which can mix the emitted colours creating different colours of light.
3. A decorative light strip of claim 1 which has two or more rows of Light Emitting Diodes
4. A decorative light strip as of claim 1 wherein the cover surrounding the row of Light Emitting Diodes is not a boxed shaped flat surface with forty five degree corners but has a rounded or oval shaped surface. CGM TECHNOLOGIES PTY. LTD. 31 st May 2002
