Abstract

Intermediate (A), optionally isotopically labeled, in the mevalonate-independent pathway of isoprenoid biosynthesis, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) aqueous cell fluid containing (I) and (A), with at least one present at higher concentration than in fluids from normal cells or organisms; (b) preparing (A); (c) enzymes (B) that convert (I) to (A); (d) isolated, purified nucleic acid (C) encoding (B); (e) DNA vectors containing (C); (f) recombinant cells containing the vector of (e); (g) screening chemical libraries for inhibitors of isoprenoid biosynthesis based on blocking conversion of (I); (h) identifying inhibitor-resistant variants of (B); (i) (B) variants identified by method (h); (j) nucleic acid (C') encoding the variants of (f); (k) (l) vectors containing (C'); (l) cells containing the vectors of (l); (m) imparting herbicide resistance to plants by incorporation of (C'); (n) weed control that involves growing crop plants of (n); (o) inhibitors (D) identified by method (g); (p) composition for inhibiting biosynthesis of isoprenoids containing (D); and (q) inhibiting biosynthesis of isoprenoids by treatment with (D) or the compositions of (q).
