Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT Applicant(s): VICTOR MCVEIGH Invention Title: "A DECORATIVE PANEL" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: -2- A Decorative Panel The present invention relates to a decorative panel for use on ceilings, walls, furniture and cupboard panelling.
The present invention provides for a new decorative panel.
According to the present invention there is provided: a decorative panel comprising a metal sheet coupled to a panel member, wherein the metal sheet has printing of a decorative nature for display on a surface of the metal sheet.
Preferably the sheet is coupled to the panel by adhesive. Alternatively the sheet is cast into the panel.
Preferably the decorative panel includes a plurality of holes extending through the metal sheet. More preferably the plurality of holes extend through the metal sheet and the panel member. Preferably the holes are arranged in a pattern. Preferably the holes are approximately 1-5mm in diameter.
In one embodiment the printing is in a single colour. In another embodiment the printing is in a plurality of colours.
In order to provide a better understanding a preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only.
A metal sheet, such as tin plated steel or aluminium, is printed with a decorative display on a planar surface of the sheet. The printing may be in single colour or multi-colour of photographic quality. The decorative image on the sheet surface may be of, for example, famous people, actors, footballers, toys, children's themes, ships, aeroplanes, fish, rainbows. An example is a blue sky with clouds or birds or butterflies. Another example is a night sky with stars and other images like moons or clouds. A further 3 example is a photograph of wood showing the grain, or a photograph of marble or granite. Further examples may include replicas of decorative art works.
The metal sheet is then adhered to a panel of plasterboard or other suitable material such as a fibre panel or a wood panel or fibro-cement panels. The panel is then installed in place.
In one preferred embodiment the metal sheet is provided with small holes of approximately 1-5mm in diameter. The arrangement of the holes may be in the form of a pattern that may form part of the decorative display. It is preferred that the holes extend all the way through the panel and the shape of the hole may be of any suitable shape, such as round, square, rectangular, triangular, diamond. The holes provide the advantage of absorbing sound. Furthermore if the decorative panel is used as a ceiling panel, the holes allow water leakage to pass therethrough to provide early detection of the leak. This can also prevent the build up of water behind the panel, which can result in a catastrophic failure of the panel if the water build-up is too great.
In another embodiment the metal sheet may be cast into plaster, fibre-cement or other suitable panel material, rather than gluing the two pieces together. In another embodiment, the metal sheet is removably fastened to the panel member, so that the decorative display can be changed.
The advantages provided by the invention are that; certain metal sheets are cheaper than, for example, plastics sheet; printed metal sheets can have higher quality printing then other materials; and the metal sheet can provide a shiny metallic finish that cannot be provided with other materials.
Modifications and variations are obvious to the skilled addressee are deemed to be within the scope of the present invention.
