The invention relates to a method for operating a vehicle train (200) having a tractive unit (10) and at least one vehicle (110), as well as for determining the association of the vehicle (110) with the vehicle train (200), in which according to the invention - the value of at least one kinematic measured variable of the vehicle (110) is determined at the vehicle end, - the value of the measured variable which is determined at the vehicle end is compared with a value of the measured variable which is determined at the tractive unit end, and - the vehicle (110) is detected as being associated with the vehicle train (200) if the comparison reveals correspondence. Furthermore, the invention relates to a tractive-unit-end communication device (15), a vehicle-end communication device (115), a tractive unit (10), a vehicle (110) and a vehicle train (200).
