Abstract

Conventional protective helmets for motor cycles and the like consist of an outer plastic shell (1), with shock-absorbing material (2) and an inner textile lining (4) below it; furthermore, they usually have a single-piece chin protection strap which is rigid or removable or can be swivelled upwards. The invention described here additionally has a gas cushion between the shock-absorbing layer (2) and the textile layer (4). The cushion is produced by an elastic, single- or multi-part sack (3) which is filled with gas and the volumetric content of which may be variable for the user by means of a pump (5) and valves (6) (7) accommodated in the helmet; or an air cushion is produced due to the dynamic pressure of the travelling wind which enters at the front side of the helmet under the textile layer (4) and is conducted off again at the rear side; thus by means of a correspondingly porous inner textile lining (4) the air flow can be used for air conditioning of the helmet. A chin protection strap (12) (13) which is movable, even gripping below the lower jaw, can be used, the closure of which sets the pump mechanism in motion when the helmet has been put on. <IMAGE>
