Method of making the tip of wood screws.
The invention aims at improvements in the manufacture of the thread on wood screws, the point of the screw being cut with the same tool as the thread and this tool being controlled in the manufacture of the point by the same parts which control the thread cutting. It is essential for the invention that the steel cutting the thread at the end of the screw does not receive any feed parallel to the screw axis for a short period of time.
The drawing illustrates an exemplary embodiment of the device used to carry out the method. u. Between Fig. 1 shows the main parts in side view, Fig. 2 shows a detail in top view.
The device has a cutting tool 1 which is used to cut the thread on the screw 2

with the angle c causes the thread cutting, the section from B to C, which has the same radius everywhere. with the 1 \ Ïnkel'l causes an interruption of the longitudinal movement of the cutting steel and the shape of the tip and the section from C to. 1 with the angle b causes the cutting steel to return.
Through the section from A to B, the thread cutting is controlled by advancing the axis 7 of the cutting steel support 11 in its two guides 9 and 10. A spring 8 always presses the axis 7 against the non-circular disk 3. An arm attached to the axis 7, at the end of which a thumb 6 made of hardened steel is provided, slides on a guide surface J according to the shape of the screw and gives the cutting steel 7 a small turning movement against the tip, which is during

approached the center of the screw.
The device can also be designed to facilitate the formation of the tip in such a way that the pitch of the helix on the non-circular disk is reduced towards point B before reaching the tip, since the width of the cutting tool remains unchanged and the cutting tool closes a smaller part of the thread towards the tip takes away.
