Process for the production of a malleable mass.

The object of the invention is to make casein malleable so that it can be worked in the same way as celluloid by cutting blocks into sections of any thickness.

So far, casein could not be given the necessary plasticity. around it
 EMI1.1

The process essentially consists in treating advantageously freshly precipitated casein with a ketone such as acetone or a derivative thereof.

The procedure is as follows: Casein is taken, which is beneficial at high levels
 EMI1.2
mixes over 1 () U C heated autoclave; the mixture is heated for about 1/4 hour and then the mixture is poured into water through holes provided at the bottom of the device, the pouring taking place under pressure and in the form of very fine jets.

Depending on the desired results (e.g. to increase the transparency), 2 nitric acid can first be added to the casein. Pour in water as indicated earlier and then repeat the same process replacing the acid with acetone; the soluble salts are excreted through the water. The product can then be treated in exactly the same way as celluloid.

Casein treated in the manner indicated only with acetone or previously with an acid and then with acetone not only has the advantages of being malleable and soluble, but also shows the remarkable property that it is insoluble
 EMI1.3
Foreign substances, such as metal oxides, can be incorporated into the products described in order to make the casein appear white or to give it another desired color and properties that are expected.

The acetone can be replaced by its derivatives or by its homologues; on this are yes. suitable: ketonic acids. like acetoacetic acid. Ethylenacetoacetic acid along with its ethyl and phenyl esters, then acetyl acetone, acetonylazetone, etc.
