<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The invention relates to a method for applying a metal coating to a metallic, strand-shaped material, in which the strand-like material is thoroughly cleaned and heated and passed through an opening in the bottom of a container in which molten material is Coating metal is located, wherein the strand-like material is withdrawn upwards with the entrainment of molten coating metal and guided with play through an opening in a control element, which consists of a material non-wettable by the coating metal, and a device for carrying out this method.
In a known method of this type the bottom of the container slopes upwards from all sides towards the edge of the opening and the normal liquid level of the molten metal in the container is maintained below this edge during operation. To initiate the coating process, the liquid level is first raised over the edge of the opening. As soon as the coating metal has touched the strand-like material, the metal level is lowered under the opening, but due to the adhesion, viscosity and surface tension, a continuous layer of the coating metal constantly pulls up over the inclined bottom of the container. The thickness of the final coating is determined by the control element.
With this known method, coatings of a very uniform consistency can be applied to strand-like material continuously at high operating speed. A particular advantage here is that the entrainment of slag, which is usually present on the surface of the metal bath, is definitely avoided. Furthermore, the wipers otherwise required to regulate the coating thickness are omitted.
A disadvantage of the known method, however, is the somewhat cumbersome and difficult process when initiating the coating.
It has now surprisingly been found that coatings with the same favorable properties can be obtained without this limitation if a coating metal is used which forms a tough and rubbery oxide, e.g. B. aluminum.
This is achieved according to the invention in that, when a coating metal which forms a tough and rubbery oxide is used, the level of the molten coating metal is held above the opening in the bottom of the container.
This unexpected departure from the known teaching is likely due to the fact that the tough, rubbery oxide film forms a meniscus on the surface of molten aluminum which is not carried upwards beyond the non-wettable control element for the coating thickness.
The measure of the method according to the invention, which is in contrast to the known method, also requires a change in the device used to carry out the method. It contains, in a manner known per se, a container for the molten coating metal, which has an opening in the bottom for the implementation of the strand-like material, devices with which the strand-like material is continuously guided upwards through the opening, and a control element in which an opening is attached, which lies in a line with the opening in the bottom of the container and surrounds the rope-shaped material with play.
In the known device, a control element is preferably used, the upper part of which consists of a material that cannot be wetted by the coating metal, and the lower part of which has a back
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Holding plate is made of a material wettable by the cover.
The device preferably used to carry out the method according to the invention differs therefrom in that the control element consists entirely of a material that cannot be wetted by the coating metal and that the distance between the underside of the control element and the upper edge of the opening in the bottom of the container 1, 25 - 1. 9 cm and the clearance between the rope-like material and the opening in the control element is 0.05-0.063 cm.
These dimensions correspond to about half the dimensions to be used in the preferred embodiment of the known device.
The invention is explained using the drawing, for example. 1 shows a schematic illustration of the bottom of the container and of the control element in cooperation with a wire to be coated, and FIG. 2 shows a schematic illustration which shows the effect achieved with an arrangement according to FIG.
In the drawing, the bottom of the container for the molten coating metal is shown at 14.
The bottom contains an opening 13 through which the metallic, string-shaped material 15 to be coated is pulled upwards with play. It. is guided in the opening 13 by guides 18b. The bottom 14 is inclined approximately conically from the upper edge of the opening 13 on all sides. The level of the molten coating metal is held above the upper edge of the opening 13, as indicated by the dash-dotted line.
Above the mirror of the metal bath, a regulating element 22 is attached which has an opening for the passage of the strand-like material to be coated. This opening surrounds the rope-like material with a certain amount of play, and it is flush with the opening 13 in the bottom of the container.
The control element 22 consists entirely of a material which cannot be wetted by the molten coating metal. This produces the effect shown in FIG. 2. The strand-like material 15 pulls molten coating metal with it as it moves upward, so that a meniscus 30 forms on the level of the metal bath. This meniscus abuts the control element 22 which, because of its non-wettability, limits the amount of metal which can pass through its opening. This determines the thickness of the coating. At the same time, slag or oxide film floating on the surface of the metal bath is retained by the control element 22 so that it cannot enter the opening and affect the final coating.
This effect occurs readily under the operating conditions described if a coating metal such as aluminum is involved, which forms a tough and rubbery oxide.
In the drawing, A 'denotes the height of the regulating element 22, C' the distance between the underside of the regulating element 22 and the upper edge of the opening 13, D 'the play between the rope-like product 15 and the opening in the regulating element 22, and E' the play between the strand-like material 15 and the opening 13 in the bottom of the container.
In practicing the invention, the dimension A * is preferably about. 12.5 mm, the dimension C 'about 12.5 mm-19 mm, the dimension D' about 0.5 mm-0.5. 63mm and the dimension E 'about 1 mm.
While the dimensions A 'and E' are roughly the same as the corresponding dimensions in the preferred embodiment of the known device described at the beginning, the dimensions C. and D 'are about half the corresponding values in the preferred embodiment of the known device.
Example: A wire with a diameter of 1.3 mm was coated with molten aluminum at a speed of 90 m / min, the level of the aluminum bath being about 6.3 to 12.5 mm above the upper edge of the opening 13. The dimension A "was about 12.5 mm, the dimension. C 'was also 12.5 mm, the dimension D' was 0.5 mm and the dimension E 'was about 1 mm. Under these conditions, a coating of excellent quality.
