properties for ropes etc. Like. Have, including excellent toughness, low specific weight (less than 1) and relatively low production costs. The water absorption is practically zero, while with polyester, polyacrylonitrile and polyamide fibers it varies between 0.4 and about 4.5%. Since these properties also occur together with good resistance to microorganisms, very good flexibility and tensile strength, the possible uses of ropes made from wires made from highly crystalline propylene are very diverse.
In the table below, some important properties of this material are compared with other materials.

For ropes with the same weight per running meter, the following tensile strength was measured for various fiber materials (in kg / mm1:
Highly crystalline polypropylene 1500
Polyamide 66 (polyhexamethylene adipamide 1390
Polyamide 6 (polycaprolactam) 900 ropes made of highly crystalline polypropylene can have the following structure, for example:
80 yarns of 920 denier, made of 230 fibers, twisted with 200 turns / m from highly crystalline polypropylene are combined parallel to a strand of 80,000 denier, which then receives an S twist of 75 turns / m. By combining three such strands in a Z-twist you get a cord; A rope with a tensile strength of more than 800 kg is obtained by twisting three such cords together in the S direction.
The ropes according to the invention are suitable for. B. as tow ropes and ropes for river and sea shipping, as parachute ropes and climbing ropes for alpinists.
