Method for producing dense blocks and similar workpieces from aluminum or
Magnesium alloys.
The invention relates to a mold for casting blocks, bars, plates and. Like. Made of aluminum or magnesium alloys. in which the casting material is fed to the mold through a longitudinal slot at the side, so that with mutual movement between mold and casting crucible, the free height of fall for the casting material can be kept very low and constant during the entire casting process. So far it has been considered necessary to open the longitudinal opening of the
Mold according to the rise of the level by a covering means, e.g.
B. od in the form of a rod, a link chain. Like. To close the progressing casting process accordingly. When using a special covering means for the lateral longitudinal opening, various precautions have also been taken to prevent the cast material from rubbing against the covering means.
It has been shown that with a slot-shaped design of the lateral longitudinal opening of the mold, a special covering means can be dispensed with if, according to the invention, the casting material is solidified in the width of the lateral slot-shaped longitudinal opening by an externally acting coolant flow, expediently gas flow, in front of or in the longitudinal opening is brought. It is sufficient here if the cooling flow acts on the casting material in the area of the solidification zone. The gas flow used for cooling is directed against the casting material under pressure. Gases such as air which are indifferent to the casting material are expediently used as coolants. Carbon dioxide, carbon dioxide and similar uses.
The pouring spout arranged above the cooling device is expediently connected to the cooling device. Depending on the setting of the coolant flow, the casting material already solidifies on the inner surface of the mold wall or within the slot-shaped longitudinal opening. In the latter case, the build-up on the side of the Giessbloek can be removed before further processing. The casting mold can, if required by its dimensions, also contain several slot-shaped longitudinal openings.
Finally, the mold can also be built up in layers in the vertical direction in order to limit the heat migration in the vertical direction of the mold.
In the drawing, a casting mold designed according to the invention is illustrated, for example. 1 shows the casting mold in longitudinal section and FIG. 2 in plan view.

H. where the casting level is located, several tubes 4 are provided, one above the other, which run radially to the mold and with their outer ends into a collecting chamber. 5 open, the through a pipe 6 under pressure a suitable coolant, for. B. carbon oxide is supplied. Instead of the tubes lying on top of one another, a corresponding rectangular or oval nozzle covering the area of the solidification zone can also be used.
The coolant flow is passed under pressure onto the casting material poured into the mold, u. between in such a way that the casting material, as shown in Fig.]

can be seen, solidified on the inner surface of the mold wall. The pouring spout 7 arranged above the cooling device is firmly connected to the cooling device. The baffle plate 8 located on the underside of the pouring spout 7 has the task of keeping the coolant flow away from the pouring jet emerging from the end of the pouring spout.
Of course, in addition to aluminum or magnesium alloys, the new casting process can also be used for other metals and alloys for which uniform solidification conditions are important.
