PERMANENTKATHODE UND VERFAHREN ZUM BEHANDLN DER OBERFLÄCHE EINER PERMANENTKATHODEPERMANENT CATHODE AND METHOD FOR TREATING THE SURFACE OF A PERMANENT CATHODE
OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to a permanent cathode, as defined in the independent claims, for use in electrolytic recovery and electrical recovery of metals. The invention further relates to a method for treating a surface of a permanent cathode plate.
OF THE INVENTION When the production of pure metal such as copper is intended, hydrometallurgical processes such as electrolytic refining or recovery are used. In electrolytic refining, impure copper anodes are electrochemically dissolved and the copper released from them is reduced to the cathode. In electrolytic recovery, the copper is reduced directly from the electrolytic solution, which is typically a copper sulfate solution. The rate of deposition of metal such as copper on the cathode surfaces depends primarily on the current density used. The cathodes used in the process can be starting sheets made of the metal to be reduced or permanent cathodes made of steel, for example. A transition to the use of permanent cathodes has long been a dominant trend in electrolytic systems and in practice all new copper electrolysis processes are based on this technology. A permanent cathode per se consists of a cathode plate and a hanging rod attached to it, with the help of which the cathode is suspended in the electrolytic bath. The copper can be mechanically pulled from the cathode plate of the permanent cathode and the permanent cathodes can be reused. Permanent cathodes can be used in both electrolytic refining and metal recovery. The mere corrosion resistance of the steel grade used as the permanent cathode plate in the electrolyte is not sufficient to guarantee that the properties required by the cathode are met. Considerable attention must be paid to the adhesive properties of the surface of the cathode plates. The surface properties of a permanent cathode plate must be suitable so that the deposition metal does not spontaneously peel off the surface during the electrolytic process, but adheres sufficiently, but that the removal of the deposited metal is not prevented with the help of a stripping machine, for example. The most important properties required of a permanent cathode plate include corrosion resistance, straightness and surface properties in terms of the adhesion and removability of the deposit.
A method according to the prior art is the production of permanent cathode plates made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is an iron-based alloy that contains more than 10.5% chromium and less than 1.2% carbon. The chrome forms a thin oxide layer on the steel surface, known as a passive film, which significantly improves the corrosion resistance of the steel. Other alloying elements can also be used to influence the properties of the passive film and thus the corrosion resistance. For example, molybdenum improves the durability of the passive film against chloride pitting, which locally damages the passive film. Alloying elements are also used to influence other properties such as mechanical properties and manufacturing properties such as weldability.
Aufgrund des großen Nutzungsumfangs werden Edel1 /15Stainless steels are widely used in applications that require good corrosion resistance, such as in the manufacturing, chemical, and pulp and paper industries. Patent Office steels are usually made by hot rolling. The roller deposit is then removed from the steel surface. Cold rolling is used to produce thinner sheets with tighter thickness tolerances. Processing after cold rolling depends on the desired surface quality. For example, the standard SFS-EN 10088-2 defines that a type 2B surface must be cold rolled, heat treated, pickled and lightly cold rolled. 2B thus describes the production route of the material and thus defines the surface properties only on a very general level, the basic parameters being the surface smoothness and the gloss.
Dies ist in den Figuren 1a, 1b und 1c veranschaulicht.[0005] Surface roughness is typically used to describe surfaces. There are countless different options for defining the surface roughness, for example the widely used R a index refers to the mean deviation of the surface roughness. However, he is not concerned with the surface profile at all - whether the surface roughness is formed by elevations or depressions. In other words, surfaces of very different qualities can have exactly the same R a index. This is illustrated in Figures 1a, 1b and 1c.
According to the patent publication US 7807028 B2, it is proposed that a permanent cathode plate can be made of an alloy that consists partly of duplex steel. A duplex grade of steel means a steel that contains 30% to 70% austenite, the rest of which is of ferritic structure. The desired structure can be created by appropriate alloy. According to the publication, the roughness of the cathode plate surface is a crucial factor for the adhesion of the metal deposit. The publication also presents structures to be fabricated on the cathode plate surface to ensure that the metal deposit adheres. Such structures include, for example, various types of holes, grooves and protrusions.
According to the patent publication US 7807029 B2 it is proposed that a permanent cathode plate is made of steel of grade 304. Grade is a universal stainless steel with a composition very close to the grade known as acid-proof steel and an austenite structure. According to this publication, the roughness of the cathode plate surface is a decisive factor for the adhesion of the metal deposit, and furthermore this publication presents structures which are to be produced on the cathode plate surface in order to ensure the adhesion of the metal deposit, it is further proposed that the steel with a 2B-Finish is manufactured to achieve adequate adhesion of the metal deposition.
An optimal surface is typically defined on the basis of parameters such as the surface roughness parameter Ra. One way of describing a surface with a certain finish is the AISI 316 2B, which describes a certain grade of steel that is lightly re-rolled. The characteristic manufacturing process creates a smooth, semi-glossy, but not reflective surface. The publication US 7807028 B2 proposes the parameter 2B for the finish of the cathode surface, which means that the surface has been processed using methods including cold rolling, heat treatment and pickling. Material processing and processing parameters are used to influence the properties of the final surface. However, the above-mentioned possibilities for defining the surface cannot be regarded as sufficient for determining an optimal surface for a permanent cathode.
The adherence to the cathode plate should be very strong as the metal deposition easily begins to peel off the plate. On the other hand, if the adhesion is too strong, it is difficult to peel off the deposit because it is almost impossible to insert a knife between the deposit and the cathode plate.

OF THE INVENTION Figures 1a, 1b and 1c illustrate different versions of the surface roughness of the cathode plate 4 in a permanent cathode 1. Figures 1a, 1b and 1c have the same R a index that describes the surface roughness, even if on closer inspection they look different, as is illustrated schematically in the figures. According to the invention, the mere surface roughness index is not sufficient to achieve a sufficiently optimal permanent cathode surface.
The permanent cathode plate 4 is held in the bath with the aid of a holding element 5.
Die Körner bilden unregelmäßige Volumen4/15The prior art has described permanent cathodes in which the surface roughness is a decisive factor for the adhesion of the metal deposition. Daher muss der Anzahl und den Eigenschaften der Korngrenzen besondere Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet werden.areas because their growth is limited by neighboring grains that grow at the same time. In the case of multigrain metal, each grain is closely connected to its neighboring grains via its surface at the grain boundary. The grain boundary is an area with high surface energy, in which the deposited copper mainly nucleates. Special attention must therefore be paid to the number and properties of the grain boundaries.
Grain boundaries can be seen with an optical or a scanning electron microscope, but an examination of the dimensions of the grain boundaries requires an atomic force microscope (AFM). An AFM has a sharp probe connected to a flexible support arm. When the probe is moved on the surface of the specimen to be examined, interactions between the surface and the probe are registered as bends of the support arm. The diffraction can be measured with a laser beam, which allows the creation of a three-dimensional image of the surface profile of the sample. An AFM can be used to measure dimensions, depth and width, the grain boundary. The width and depth of grain boundaries naturally vary to a certain extent. This variation can be represented as a normal deviation, which allows statistical processing of the dimension.
The grain size of a material can be defined in various ways. One of the methods is the line intercept method (Metals Handbook, Desk Edition, ASM International, Metals Park, Ohio, USA, 1998 pp. 1405-1409), in which the grain size is 1 = 1 / N, where N L is the Number of grain boundaries divided by the measuring distance. According to the formula, the grain size is inversely proportional to the number of grain boundaries per unit length.
Figures 3 a and 3b illustrate the surface 6 of a permanent cathode plate 4 in a permanent cathode 1 according to the invention and the schematic drawing shows the width W and the depth d of the grain boundary between grains 8 in the surface. The grain boundary width can be estimated from an image that was recorded using an optical microscope or a scanning electron microscope, or it can be measured from AFM results. According to the invention, at least a part of the surface of the permanent cathode plate 6 which is in contact with the electrolyte is treated. The grain boundaries 7 between the grains 8 in the surface of the permanent cathode plate 6 are treated so that they are suitable for the adhesion of deposited metal to the surface and for the removal of metal therefrom. An optimal surface for the growth of metal can be achieved according to the invention. According to the invention, the dimensions of grain boundaries 7 in the surface 6 are modified in order to achieve an optimal permanent cathode surface. The grain size of grains 8 in the surface 6 of an optimal permanent cathode plate 4, measured using the line intercept method, is 1 to 40 micrometers; the average grain boundary width W is 1 to 3 micrometers and the average grain boundary depth d is less than 1 micrometer. A permanent cathode plate according to the invention can be made of austenite steel, for example. According to the invention, the surface of the permanent cathode plate is treated, for example by electro-etching, until the desired separation force is reached. The separating force represents the separability of the deposited material from the surface. If the separating force is too small, the metal deposition will pull itself off from the surface of the permanent cathode plate, while an excessively large separating force makes it difficult to pull the metal deposit from the surface of the permanent cathode plate ,
Dieses Problem kann gelöst werden, indem ein Bereich mit geringerer Anhaftung naheSince complete deposition of stiff metal requires strong adherence to the cathode surface to prevent peeling or self-stripping, this also makes starting the stripping more difficult, it can be difficult to put a knife between the cathode plate and the deposition to remove the deposit from the plate. Bending the plate may not be possible due to the stiffness of the metal deposit. This problem can be solved by making an area with less adhesion close

Patent Office is arranged the electrolyte level, d. H. near the level at which deposition begins. This area with weak adhesion is easy to peel off and provides a good starting point for peeling off the deposit. Two or more areas with different adhesion properties can be easily manufactured, for example, by etching one area and not etching another area.
Figure 5a illustrates a permanent cathode, which is provided with three surface areas 6a, 6b and 6c with different adhesion properties. Line L shows the level of the electrolytic solution when the permanent cathode plate 4 is immersed in an electrolytic bath. The main part of the cathode plate surface, area 6a, is etched in such a way that the desired relative dimensions of the grain boundaries are achieved in order to improve the adhesion of metal deposition on the permanent cathode plate 4. The part of the permanent cathode plate 4 above the electrolyte level L, area 6c, can be non-etched or slightly etched. Between the more etched area 6a and the non-etched or slightly etched area 6c, below the electrolyte level L, there is a third area 6b, which is not etched or so etched that the grain boundary dimensions cause only weak adhesion. The adhesion properties of the two non-etched or slightly etched areas 6b and 6c can be similar or different. It is important that the permanent cathode plate 4 has at least one region 6a with strong adhesion and at least one region 6b with weak adhesion, the region 6b with weak adhesion being at least partially below the electrolyte height L.
[0038] Figur 5b zeigt eine alternative Ausführungsform, bei der Bereich 6b mit schwacher Anhaftung im mittleren Bereich der Breite der Kathodenplatte 4 liegt und die Ränder des Bereichs unterhalb der Elektrolythöhe L einen Teil eines stärker geätzten Bereichs 6a bilden.FIG. 5b shows an alternative embodiment in which area 6b with weak adhesion lies in the central area of the width of the cathode plate 4 and the edges of the area below the electrolyte height L form part of a more etched area 6a.
The embodiments of Figures 5a and 5b make it easy to start peeling when the main part 6a of the permanent cathode plate 4 has strong deposition adhesion. In the case of copper, stripping can easily be started by bending the permanent cathode plate 4 to release the deposit from adhering to the plate. However, if nickel is deposited as a thick deposit using so-called full-deposition permanent cathodes, the bending of the permanent cathode plate 4 can be difficult since nickel is a stiff metal that does not deform easily.
Good adhesion properties are preferably achieved by etching at least part of the cathode plate 4. In the embodiment of FIGS. 5a and 5b, the part 6b of the cathode plate 4 which lies directly below the electrolyte height L is not etched or only slightly etched in order to obtain an area 6b with much weaker adhesion properties than the main part 6a of the cathode plate 4. The manufacture of this type of permanent cathode plate 4 is basically simple. The areas 6b, 6c that are not to be etched are covered, for example, by an adhesive tape or, more simply, the plate is only immersed in an etching solvent to a certain depth.
Figure 6 illustrates the operation of a permanent cathode plate 4 according to Figure 5a. In practice, there are metal deposits 11 on both sides of the cathode plate 4, but for the sake of simplicity only one metal deposit 11 is shown in FIG.
The removal of the metal deposit 11 from the permanent cathode plate 4 is started by pushing a knife 10 or wedge of a removal machine between the permanent cathode plate 4 and the metal deposit 11. The main part of the metal deposit 11 adheres strongly to the surface 6a of the cathode plate 4. In the upper part of the metal deposit 11 there is a deposit 11b with only weak adhesion to the surface 6b of the cathode plate 4. Accordingly, it is easy in this area that Slide knife 10 between the metal deposit 10b and the plate 4. This gives a good starting point for removing the metal deposit 11.
Die Kraft, die zum Erzeugen einesThe principle behind the functioning of the starting point for pulling off can theoretically be explained with basic fracture mechanics. H. for removing the deposited metal 11 from the permanent cathode surface 6a, 6b, can approximately be represented with the following formula:
wobei F die erforderliche Kraft ist, A die abzuziehende Fläche ist, Κϊ der Spannungsintensitätsfaktor ist und a die anfängliche Rissgröße ist.where F is the force required, A is the area to be subtracted, Κϊ is the stress intensity factor and a is the initial crack size.
As a result, when the initial crack size a is very small, the force F becomes very high. Conversely, if the value of a is increased, for example by generating a starting point for the pull-off described above, the force F can be reduced considerably.
Figure 7 illustrates the self-alignment of the preferred fracture path 13 in the interface between the metal deposition 11 and the permanent cathode plate 4 when subtracting 12 in the presence of small defects at the upper end of the deposition 11. Since the interface between the metal deposit 11 and the cathode plate 4 is the weakest point, the fracture will preferably occur along the interface, even if the edges 12 of the metal deposit 11 were "spring-like", as shown in FIG. 7. The invention is illustrated below with the aid of examples.
Example 1 [0048] The permanent cathode plates used had materials with different grain boundary properties. The materials were: AISI 316L (EN 1.4404) in delivery condition 2B (sample 1), AISI 316L (EN 1.4404) strongly etched (sample 2), LDX 2101 (EN 1.4162) in delivery condition 2E (sample 3) yes AISI 444 (EN 1.4521 ) 2B with two different degrees of etching (samples 4 and 5). AISI 316L material was etched to enlarge the grain boundaries and AISI 444 material was etched to open the grain boundaries. The etching process used was electrolytic etching. Small samples were cut from the materials of the permanent cathode plates and subjected to an AFM test to determine the grain boundary dimensions of the materials. The measured dimensions are shown in Table 1. In the table, W refers to the grain boundary width and d refers to the grain boundary depth.

Patent office surface was 30 mm. After the deposition, the copper disks were separated from the permanent cathode plate with the help of a special pulling device, which was able to measure the force required for the separation.
The electrolysis equipment consisted of a 3 liter electrolysis cell and a 5 liter circulation tank. The electrolyte was pumped from the circulating tank into the electrolytic cell, from where it returned to the circulating tank at a solution circulation rate of 7 liters per minute. The circulation tank was equipped with a heater and an agitator.
The electrolyte used for the experiments consisted of copper sulfate and sulfuric acid and contained 50 g / l copper and 150 g / l sulfuric acid. Hydrochloric acid was also added to the electrolyte so that the electrolyte had a chloride content of 50 mg / l. Bone glue and thiourea were used as additives and continuously fed as an aqueous solution into the circulation tank. The electrolyte temperature in the electrolytic cell was kept at 65 ° C by regulating the electrolyte temperature in the circulating tank. The current density of the cathode in the experiments was 30 mA / cm 2 , which corresponds well to the current density used in large-scale electrolysis. The electrolysis time was 20 hours in each test. After electrolysis, the masking plate was removed from the permanent cathode and the copper washers were separated from the permanent cathode after a fixed period of time after the end of the experiment. The force required for separation was measured and the forces are shown in Table 2 as relative forces, with AISI 316L serving as the reference point in delivery condition 2B. The choice of the reference point is based on the fact that such a permanent cathode material is generally used in copper electrolysis plants.
Based on the test results, the level of the separation force is clearly dependent on the grain boundary dimensions of the permanent cathode material. Etching can be used to further open the grain boundaries of the materials in both the width and depth directions. The duplex material LDX 2101 was not treated at all before the tests, and the separation force measured on this material is also greater than the separation force measured on the reference material.
[0054] Tabelle 2. Trennkräfte, die an verschiedenen Permanentkathodenmaterialien gemessen wurdenTable 2. Separation forces, which were measured on different permanent cathode materials
A comparison of the measured separation forces with the grain boundary dimensions measured in the AFM analysis (Table 1) shows that the wider and deeper the grain boundaries, the greater the separation force is required. The relationship between the width and the depth of the grain boundaries in particular has a significant effect on the required separating force.
Es ist festzustellen, dass die Ätzbehandlung neben anderen Dingen die Oberflächenrauigkeit in gewissem Maß verändert hat. in einem Vergleich der OberflächenrauigkeitenThe surface roughness (R a indexes) of the permanent cathode materials selected for the separation tests were also measured and the measured values are shown in Table 3. It should be noted that the etching treatment, among other things, has changed the surface roughness to some extent. in a comparison of the surface roughness

However, the patent office and the measurement results from the separation tests show no clear correlation. The surface roughness index does not measure the grain boundary dimensions. Therefore, the roughness index alone cannot be regarded as a sufficient criterion for achieving the desired adhesion and separation force.
[0057] Tabelle 3. Ra-Indexe der Materialien der Permanentkathodenplatten.Table 3. R a indexes of the materials of the permanent cathode plates.
Furthermore, the average crown sizes of the various permanent cathode materials were measured with the aid of a microscope and the line intercept method. The measurement results are shown in Table 4.
[0059] Tabelle 4. Korngrößen der Materialien der Permanentkathodenplatten.Table 4. Grain sizes of the materials of the permanent cathode plates.
Example 2 When the permanent cathodes were tested in large-scale copper electrolysis, a phenomenon occurred immediately after start-up, which is called self-peeling. This means that the copper deposited on the permanent cathode surface spontaneously peels off the surface of the permanent cathode plate, either during the deposition process or when the permanent cathode is lifted out of the electrolytic bath. The phenomenon naturally causes problems in an electrolytic system and such permanent cathodes cannot be used. A sample was cut from the self-releasing permanent cathode (material AISI 316L) for the analysis of its surface. The surface structure of the permanent cathode plate is shown in FIG. 4 as an image from a scanning electron microscope.
Der Lieferzustand der Permanentkathodenplatte lautete 2B und gemäß Messungen variierte der Ra-Index ihrer Oberfläche zwischenThe surface structure of the permanent cathode plate immediately shows that the grain boundaries of the material have opened too much during the pickling process and that there is no longer any suitable adhesion surface for copper. The delivery state of the permanent cathode plate was 2B and according to measurements the R a index of its surface varied between

The grain boundary width of the sample, measured using an image from a scanning electron microscope, was 8 to 10 gm.
The occurrence of self-peeling at the cathode shows that the delivery state and the surface roughness indices of a permanent cathode plate are not sufficient criteria for correct functioning of the plate in copper electrolysis, but that the grain boundary dimensions have to be controlled.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that as technology advances, the basic idea of the invention can be implemented in various ways.
