   Den Gegenstand der Erfindung bildet ein Verfahren zum   Härten   von Eisen-, Stahl-und Gusseisenlegierungen durch Nitrieren in Gegenwart von Halogenen. Es hat sich   gezeigt. dass   bei der nitrierhärtung eine Steigerung der Härte und der   Härtetiefe erreicht werden kann,   wenn man die Nitrierung in Gegenwart von Halogenen oder deren Verbindungen durchführt. 



  Schon bei Anwesenheit geringer Mengen von Halogenen in elementarer oder gebundener Form macht sich die Steigerung der Wirksamkeit des Nitriermittels bemerkbar. 



   In der Zeichnung sind die Härtekurven einer nach dem bisher   üblichen   Verfahren und einer nach dem vorliegenden   Verfahren durchgeführten Härtung   eines vergüteten Stahles mit   0#3% C. 0#2% Si, 0#3% Mn, 1#5% Cr   und   1, 2%, Al   dargestellt.
