Can opener for tin cans.
Can openers are already known which are intended to facilitate the opening of tin cans, mainly shoe polish cans, and which essentially consist of a plate rotatably mounted on the wall of the can, which is designed in the form of a one-armed or two-armed lever and at its twist raises the can lid. Although these can openers work well, they could not be used in practice because the rivet or bolt used to fasten these openers made the can much more expensive and prevented it from being sealed airtight, so that the rivet penetrating the rivet
Air caused the contents to spoil if the can was stored for a long time.
This disadvantage is eliminated according to the invention in that the rotatable opener known per se is releasably connected to the lower part or upper part of the can with the help of a special plate or shield, whereby the expensive riveting process is superfluous and the closure remains just as airtight as with the cans that are not provided with an opener.
The drawing illustrates in FIGS. 1 and 2 a can provided with the new opener, partly in the front or in the front. Top view, while FIG. 3 shows the section of the can through the central axis of the opener.
In the embodiment shown on an enlarged scale in the drawing, the lower part of the can is denoted by 10 and the lid by 11. The rotating part of the opener consists of the plate 2, which has handles 6 and 7 at both ends and works in a known manner in such a way that its edge 8 (or 9) when the plate is rotated: 2 on the circumferential bead 12 the can, lifting the lid. The plate o is provided with a pin 5 which can be made in one piece with the plate or rigidly connected to it in any desired manner.
To support this rotatable part, according to the invention, a shield 1 is used which is provided with an opening 17 for receiving the pin 5 and is releasably connected to the box. In the embodiment shown, this connection is established in such a way that the shield 1 at its lower end with the flange 4 bent back at 180 and at the top with an elastic thumb:
J is provided, whereby the entire can opener device can be easily assembled without using any tools by first inserting the pin 5 into the opening 17 of the shield 1, then pushing the flange 4 onto the edge 16 of the lid and finally the thumb: 3 lets snap the bottom wall of the lid. The Dosenöffnvorriehtung is held strong enough by the elasticity of the shield 1. This mounting is much cheaper than riveting, whereby the very thin bend 4 located between the lower part of the can and the lid does not impair the airtight sealing of the can, as it does not rise up to the conical part of the lower part that causes the closure.
So that the thumb J rests firmly on the lid. a recess 14 can be formed on the edge of its base plate, the shape of which preferably corresponds to the shape of the thumb. In this case, the thumb forms an acute angle with the shield, but it can also be perpendicular to the shield. The bead 12 of the lower part of the can must have a corresponding size for the purpose of the edge 8 or 9 resting properly, but it can have any cross-sectional shape.
The can opener attachment according to the present invention can also be used with those known openers which are attached to the can base. In this case, the bead 12 must be flattened at the location of the opener and the recess 14 must be provided on the bottom of the can.

So that the shield presses the plate 2 elastically onto the cover, on the upper part of the shield when the thumb meets. 3 and the straight part of the shield, the curvature 15 is formed, which is indicated in Fig. 3 with dashed lines. This measure ensures that the shield does not touch the cylinder jacket of the cover and so the plate 2 3 is safely pressed.
Of course, the opening device can also be arranged in such a way that the pivot pin of the lever 2 is not made of one piece with this itself, but with the shield and is inserted into a corresponding opening of the lever.
